San Francisco: The National Society of Colonial Dames of America, 1907. Very good. Invitation; single sheet, folded - 7 x 4 1/2; pp. [4] - text to first page only; cream stock, printed in blue in an ornate font; fold line through middle, else very minor wear - in very good to near fine condition. Documenting a part of the early history of the NSCDA in California, the invitation referred to the unveiling and dedication of the so called historic "Navigators' Sundial," also known as the "Turtle Dial" in Golden Gate Park. The six-foot-tall, bronze-and-cast-stone sundial (symbolizing the slow passage of time) was the California Chapter of the NSCDA's first gift to San Francisco. Created by prominent California sculptor M. Earl Cummings (1876–1936), the sundial commemorated the early exploration of the West Coast and three of the great navigators - Sir Francis Drake, Juan de Cabrillo, and Fortuo Ximines.
