Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1988. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. Baldessari, John. Main volume: octavo, 10 1/4" by 6 3/4", 624 pages. Essay: same size, 44 pages. Photo-collages, same size, 86 accordion-fold pages. The type is Caslon Old Style, the face used for the first printings of Sterne's original nine volumes (1760-1767), in Monotype composition by Mackenzie-Harris, with larger sizes handset. The paper is a special making of all-cotton Curtis Ruysdael. Tipped-in marbled paper was specially made. The binding of the main volume is machine-sewn, with a dark green calf spine and corners, mabled paper sides, and gold spine titling. The essay volume is identical in production except it is bond in green paper over boards, with gold titling on the front. The accordion-fold volume of photo-collages and excerpts was printed by offset lithography on Curtis Bridgewater Cover paper and has green paper-covered boards with gold titling on the front cover, and a piece of folded green paper covering the fore-edge. All three volumes are in a single slipcase, covered in green paper with spine titling in gold. An extra suite of five large-scale lithographic prints was printed in black and eight colors of inks. The paper is T.H. Saunders Waterford Hot Press paper, ranging in size within 22 by 30 inches. The suite is housed in a portfolio with a green cloth spine and green paper sides with a titling label on the front. Edition of 50 numbered sets, plus 15 hors de commerce, signed by the artist. With 39 photo-collage illustrations and an extra suite of five lithographs by John Baldessari, in three volumes, with prospectus. Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) was an obscure country parson when he self-published the first two volumes of this novel in 1760. When he died eight years later, he was rich and famous, and his book, unlike any other work of English fiction, had garnered extravagent praise and abundant censure. He acknowledged inspiration in the writings of Rabelais, Cervantes, and Montaigne, but "Tristram Shandy" was and remains an original, provocative, and hilariously funny book. The text was highly unusual in its typographic presentation, and Arion Press went out of its way to be faithful to the details of the setting, which include asterisks for naughty words, a marbled page, and a black page. Please note that while this set is new, the leather back of the main volume does show a few very light, stray marks. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this set is extremely large and heavy, and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. A touching association copy from the estate of Sherry Elizabeth Vetter, a Berkeley graduate who dated Brautigan in San Francisco. She wears a different dress in the outtake photo but has the same lovely smile, posing with the chocolate cake she made herself - a reference to the first story in this collection. He wrote to her while she was visiting family in Kentucky on November 4, three weeks before he signed the book to her: "Fog is the story here in San Francisco. We've had three days of it now. I like it but look forward to seeing the heads and tails of your shiny little face.

Description
Some woodcut diagrams. Woodblock-printed. 3, 76; 71; 93; 71 folding leaves. Four quyển in four vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers with pasted-on handwritten title-slip, leaves appear to be knot-bound inside, red edges. [Vietnam: Nguyễn dynasty?]. Rare Vietnamese edition of the Classic of Changes, incorporating cosmological diagrams and commentaries of the Neo-Confucian philosophers Shao Yong 邵雍 (1012-77), Cheng Yi 程颐 (1033-1107) and Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130-1200). The only other Vietnamese copy of the Classic of Changes in WorldCat is a different edition, held at Leiden University (accession no. 695525306). "The Yijing was probably introduced into Vietnam at about the same time as it reached Korea and Japan, but it did not become influential until the establishment of the Lê dynasty (1428-1789). During that period Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism became state orthodoxy, and the Changes was studied both as a Confucian classic at the Imperial College and as a divination manual at the Ministry of Rites."-Richard J. Smith, The I Ching: A Biography (2012), pp. 151-52. "Yijing scholarship in Vietnam was highly pragmatic. Vietnamese scholars were not interested in metaphysical discussions or textual criticism. To most Vietnamese, the Yijing was a book of high practical value. The Yijing was basically treated as a textbook for the civil service examinations. The Vietnamese government reprinted Zhu Xi and Cheng Yi's commentaries on the Yijing numerous times to promote Confucian education and morality... "Traditional Vietnam also applied Yijing-related principles to things and affairs in their daily life. Though not a popular and influential text in the Vietnamese Confucian circle, the Yijing and its yinyang wuxing (two primal forces and five basic agents) doctrine penetrated the ideas and practices of Vietnamese politics, medicine, agriculture, calendrical studies, geography, religion and folklore. The yinyang wuxing doctrine shaped the Vietnamese perception of their society, politics, human relationship and the outside world...The imperial family and the courtiers applied the principle of wuxing in naming. Vietnamese scholars used the Yijing to advocate the 'six-eight poetry.' Some Vietnamese officials claimed authority from the divination of the Yijing. Geomancy or fengshui based on the yinyang wuxing doctrine was prevalent in Vietnamese thought and folklore."-Wai-Ming Ng, "Yijing Scholarship in Late Nguyễn Vietnam," Review of Vietnamese Studies 3, No. 1 (2003), p. 5. Our copy of the Classic of Changes appears to be identical to the digitized copy held at the National Library of Vietnam, HVv.1/1-4, which has been described as a Vietnamese reprint of a Yongle-era (1403-25) Chinese edition. It is a succinct presentation of the Classic of Changes with essential prefatory and in-line commentaries by Neo-Confucian scholars, including a series of cosmological diagrams in the first volume. As Richard Smith notes above, Yijing editions such as ours have been published in Vietnam since the Lê dynasty, and the absence of publication information - either of the Chinese edition or the Vietnamese reprint - makes our copy difficult to date. The presence of handwritten marginalia in sinographs, nevertheless, makes clear that our copy has been carefully studied by at least one Vietnamese student of the classic, presumably before the abolishment of the civil examination system in 1919. Overall very good condition, with light (and mostly marginal) staining and worming. The endpapers are recycled paper with printed and handwritten texts. Edges are painted red, and some are split along the fore-edge, which does not affect reading. Annotated by hand throughout in red ink, with additional (and later) page numbers in Arabic numerals and glosses in the Vietnamese Latin alphabet. ❧ Yuenan Hannan wenxian ziliaoku 越南漢喃文獻資料庫, Academia Sinica.

Good to very good. Short tears, including larger closed short tear to head.
Description
Lausanne, Switzerland: General Dynamics, Lith. R. Marsens, 1955. Good to very good. Short tears, including larger closed short tear to head.. An exceptional poster designed by Erik Nitsche (1908-1998), while working as art director for the engineering firm General Dynamics in 1955. It is part of the "Atoms for Peace" poster series, and was exhibited by the firm at the 1955 International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva, Switzerland. What makes the series so impactful-- aside from their stunning use of color, typography, and image-- is the coherent message Nitsche has woven throughout the pieces: that atomic energy can be used for peace and modern innovation among nations, rather than destruction and discord sown by the advent of Oppenheimer's atomic bomb. The posters each feature a different minimal, yet nuanced expression of modern science and innovation, with the phrase "Atoms for Peace" in different languages including French, Hindi, English, Spanish, German, Italian, and Arabic. Nitsche, Erik. "Hydrodynamics". Lausanne: General Dynamics, Lith. R. Marsens, 1955. Lithographed poster measuring approx. 50" by 35". Depicts submarine exiting a Nautilus shell, with a globe in the center of the Nautilus. French at head reads, "l'atom au service de la paix

1775. London: T. Payne, 1775/1776. 3 vols, 4to, xx, 516; [2], vi, 535; viii, 602 pp, with 31 engravings on the 30 listed plates. A very good and attractive set in clean condition, bound in original calf with gilt decorated rules to covers, and gilt decoration to spine panels, with six compartments and red and black labels. § Second edition of Vol. 1 and 2 (1775), and only edition of Vol. 3 (1796). The three maps are lacking. All other illustrations are present in good condition but including usual offsetting and a few showing minor mottling and browning. Plate XI, stated in the List of Plates to be a Bartolozzi engraved plate designed by Cypriani from an original onyx Camaio by the Greek artist Tryphon is the correct plate, although in fact it bears no plate No. and the imprint "G. B. Cipriani Del, I.K. Sherwin Sculp.." Although Bartolozzi normally signs his studio's plates, J. K. Sherwin was an apprentice of Bartolozzi's, and presumably was allowed to sign his engraving in this instance. The plate's design matches "The Marriage of Eros and Psyche" from Tryphon's Camaio in the Duke of Marlborough's Collection (see e.g Wikipaedia: "The Marlborough Gem"). Bentley, BB, 439. Essick, CBI, p. 117 entry C.

Description
1970. [Feminist] Impolite Questions About Frederick Engels, A Feminist Journal. Women Unlimited: St. Paul Minnesota, March 1970. A journal with two articles of feminist theory reexamining the work of Frederick Engels. Measures 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Marigold yellow soft cover pamphlet stapled with 50 cent mark in top corner and "no. 1" printed at bottom beneath title. These papers criticize the biases underlying Engel's milestone text, The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, revealing the limitations of Marxism within a patriarchal framework. The 1970s were a period of rapid growth for feminist theory with new scholarly attention turned to the role gender plays in shaping every aspect of human experience, including those limiting experiences of theorists like Engel. As feminist radicalism gained respect within scholarship, perspective on prominent texts shifted, too. Ink imprints from opposing pages do not obscure text. Text has been underlined in black in places. Very good condition.
