Description
New York: McLoughlin Bros, 1875. Wraps. Very good +. [POETRY]. 4to square (10 5/8" x 9"); stiff color pictorial wrapper, lettering and Rip Van Winkle on the front in a decorative border, publisher's ad on rear; 6 chromolithographed plates, small b&w illustrations in text; light scuffing to front pictorial, light shelf-wear to wrapper, a few small internal spots; very good plus. Washington Irving's (1783-1859) classic tale of a lazy and alcoholic local man named Rip Van Winkle told in rhyming verse by George Webster (1828-1899). A curious tale for children about a man who drinks alcohol and falls asleep for twenty years. The rear wrapper lists the publisher's book series including "Aunt Louisa's Big Picture Series. 36 Kinds-25 Cents Each," "New Paper Dolls," "Dolly Varden Dolls," and "Chiromagica. Magical Hand and Mysterious Question-Answerer." Dolly Varden Dolls and the Chiromagica game were both published by McLoughlin in the 1870s.
