Description
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1924. First edition. original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of the presentation of "Bose-Einstein statistics." “In 1924 [Bose] found a way to derive Planck’s equation for black body radiation using a statistical approach based entirely on the idea that light is made up of tiny particles (photons). This echoed the statistical mechanics approach of Ludwig Boltzmann to the behaviour of gases, but using a different statistical rule; it derives black body radiation entirely in quantum terms, without using the idea of electromagnetic radiation at all. Bose wrote a paper about his discovery and sent it to Albert Einstein, who immediately saw its significance, translated it into German and arranged for its publication in the prestigious Zeitschrift für Physik. Einstein developed the idea to apply to other kinds of particle, not just to a ‘gas’ of photons, which is why this approach is usually referred to as ‘Bose-Einstein statistics’. Paul Dirac coined the name ‘bosons’ for particles which obey Bose-Einstein statistics" (Gribbin, Q is for Quantum). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: “Discovery of new statistical counting rules for light quanta and a new derivation of Planck’s radiation law. Known as Bose-Einstein quantum statistics for particles with integer spins.” WITH a follow-up paper by Bose: "Wärmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie": "Bose's first paper in 'Zeitschrift für Physik' was followed by another that was also translated by Einstein and published during 1924. In it Bose provided a general statistical treatment of emission and absorption processes for electromagnetic radiation in equilibrium with matter. This paper was accompanied by a note by Einstein expressing serious doubts about the method. In January 1925 Bose wrote to Einstein from Paris that he was working on a paper he felt would remove these doubts. But it seems never to have been completed" (DSB). Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese. IN: Zeitschrift für Physik, Vol 26, No. 3, August 1924, pp. 178-81. Berlin: Julius Springer, 1924. [“Wärmegleichgewicht”, Vol 27, No. 5/6, September 1924, pp. 384-93.] Octavo, original wrappers. “Planks Gesetz” with small closed tear at rear wrapper edge; otherwise fine condition; “Wärmegleichgewicht” with small chip to base of front wrapper. Description
1919 1919. 8 ½ " x 10 ½ " Type 1 black and white photo. Original photo of 1919 Chicago White Sox team in uniforms, seated in front of the bleachers, with Joe Jackson at far left. Very good photo, with a small closed tear to top edge, some writing in black marker to bottom of photo, and some trimming to edges. Overall, a scarce original photo of a team that features prominently in baseball lore. In the Black Sox Scandal, eight Chicago White Sox players - Arnold "Chick" Gandil, Eddie Cicotte, Oscar "Happy" Felsch, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Fred McMullin, Charles "Swede" Risberg, George "Buck" Weaver, and Claude "Lefty" Williams - were accused of fixing the 1919 World Series (the White Sox lost the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds five games to three in a best-of-nine series). In response to the scandal, the autocratic former federal judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was appointed as Commissioner of the league in 1920. Kenesaw banned the eight accused White Sox players from the league for life, and they were also banned from Hall of Fame consideration. There is a lot of controversy regarding Joe Jackson's Hall of Fame ban, stemming from unanswered questions about the extent of his participation in the fix (he accepted a bribe, yet performed extremely well in the series, with a .375 batting average and a then-record 12 base hits). Regardless, he was one of the all-time great professional baseball players, boasting a .356 lifetime batting average. Interestingly, Babe Ruth copied Jackson's batting technique, specifically his "feet-together batting stance and his power stride into the pitch" (Britannica). In 1982, W. P. Kinsella published the book Shoeless Joe, which was later adapted into the classic film, Field of Dreams (1989).. Photograph.

Nine volumes (complete), all first printings (1981-1986), octavo size, approx. 4250 pp., with accompanying booklet, all text in German. Karl Löwith (1897-1973), student of Husseri and Heidegger, "was one of the most prolific German philosophers of the twentieth century" (n.b., from Wiki). "His main influences include Heidegger, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Kierkegaard. His writing after WWII can be read in the same vein as other Christian philosophers and theologians of the 20th century. Often called responses to 'crisis', Christian intellectuals of this era, such as Karl Barth (Protestant), Florovsky (Orthodox), and Erich Przywara (Roman Catholic), attempted to articulate an understanding of Christian faith in response to the challenges of scientism, secularism, and skepticism" (ibid). This publication includes his complete works in nine volumes, as follows: Band 1. Mensch und Umwelt; Band 2: Weltgeschichte und Heilsgeschehen; Band 3: Wissen, Glaube und Skepsis; Band 4: Von Hegel zu Nietzsche; Band 5: Hegel und die Aufhebung der Philosophie im 19. Jahrhundert- Max Weber; Band 6: Nietzsche; Band 7: Jacob Burckhardt; Band 8: Heidegger- Denker in dürftiger Zeit; Band 9: Gott, Mensch und Welt in der Philosophie der Neuzeit- G.B. Vico- Paul Valéry. Accompanying the volumes is a booklet, "Editorische Vorgemerkung", which provides Löwith's curriculum vitae (1959), the contents of each of the nine volumes, a chronological directory, and a few black-and-white reproductions of photographs. ___DESCRIPTION: Volumes bound in light grey cloth over boards, white paper spine labels with black lettering, octavo size (8 3/8" by 5 1/2"), pagination: Band 1, 500 pp., Band 2, 617 pp., Band 3, 469 pp., Band 4, 561 pp., Band 5, 454 pp., Band 6, 555 pp., Band 7, 392 pp., Band 8, 298 pp., and Band 9, 421 pp. The accompanying booklet bound in grey wraps with red and black lettering, staple-bound, measuring 8 3/16" by 5", 30 pp. Please note that all text, both the set and booklet, is in German. ___CONDITION: Fine overall, the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors clean and bright, the sole prior owner marking we see a small private library label at the top of the front pastedown in the first volume; the label for Band 3 only a darker shade than the rest, a minute spot or two and light dustiness on the text block edges of a few volumes, else fine, most volumes still with that "tight" feel, in appearance unread. Good to very good. Light dust soiling, a couple nicks or short tears.
Description
New York, New York: Broadway Music Corporation, 1919. Good to very good. Light dust soiling, a couple nicks or short tears.. Printed sheet music with lyrics for a post-WWI blues song called "The Alcoholic Blues", lamenting the war and Prohibition: "I love my country, 'deed I do, But oh, that war has made me blue ... I've got the alcoholic blues ... Prohibition that's the name, Prohibition drives me insane. I'm so thirsty, soon I'll die, I'm simply goin' to 'vaporate, I'm just that dry". Both humorous and incisive, providing insight into the struggles of jaded or marginalized young men in post WWI America. Illus. bifolium (11.75" by 9") with image of inebriated owl perched on a crescent moon on front, adverts for other sheet music on back. This copy is special because it is accompanied by a sheet of hand typewritten lyrics (which appear to be original), that can be substituted for the original lyrics. They describe the struggle of coal miners in this period: Coal Mining Johnson was his name, But mining coal was not his game, He had a business so they say, His business was removing booze that came his way, When he heard the prohibition law was passed, He looked just like a soldier that had just been gassed, He started shouting he started to pray, And all the neighbors heard him say, I got the blues, I got the blues, I got the alcoholic blues ..." Measures approx. 9" by 7.25". Pencil manuscript arithmetic on the verso, with pencil manuscript draft for more lyrics (perhaps for a different song?). With printed flyer advertising the Chicago Evening Post and Evening Journal (11.75" by 8.5").
