[Phu Cat, Vietnam, 1969. Very good.. [10] leaves, illustrated with seventy-six color photographs, plus a few pages filled with newspaper clippings, greeting cards, and other ephemera, and with examples of Vietnamese currency and coins laid in. Contemporary spiral bound pictorial green textured paper-covered boards illustrated with an outline map and stamped "Memory of South Viet-Nam." Edges somewhat scuffed, boards lightly soiled. Occasional mild fading to some pictures. A unique collection of photographs and ephemera capturing the exploits of a young American Airman in Vietnam named Michael L. Beeman. Hailing from Mount Vernon, Ohio, Beeman trained at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and then served with the United States Air Force's 37th Security Police United in Phu Cat, Vietnam beginning in 1968. A newspaper clipping included here and describing Beeman's service is dated in manuscript "June 6-69." The photographs picture a wide range of subjects beginning with a "Vietnam Sunset," views of numerous temples, palaces, and statuary, Buddhist monks, a "Ceremonial Dance," street scenes in Phu Cat, scenes in the countryside (including Vietnamese children), shots from a boxing match, two out-of-focus pictures of a cockfight, river views, and scenes of Beeman horsing around with his fellow soldiers. Some of the other soldiers, including a couple of African American buddies, are identified by name.

FRANK MACFARLANE BURNET (1899 - 1985) was an Australian virologist best known for his contributions to immunology. He won a Nobel Prize in 1960 for predicting acquired immune tolerance and was best known for developing the theory of clonal selection. Burnet's major achievements in microbiology included discovering the causative agents of Q-fever and psittacosis; developing assays for the isolation, culture and detection of influenza virus; describing the recombination of influenza strains; demonstrating that the myxomatosis virus does not cause disease in humans. Modern methods for producing influenza vaccines are still based on Burnet's work improving virus growing processes in hen's eggs. WENDELL MEREDITH STANLEY (1904 - 1971) studied at the University of Illinois, gaining an MS in science in 1927 followed by a Ph.D. in chemistry two years later. As a member of National Research Council he moved temporarily for academic work with Heinrich Wieland in Munich before he returned to the States in 1931. On return he was approved as an assistant at The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. He remained with the Institute until 1948, becoming an Associate Member in 1937, and a Member in 1940. In 1948, he became Professor of Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and built the Virus Laboratory and a free-standing Department of Biochemistry building, which is now called Stanley Hall. His researches on the virus causing the mosaic disease in tobacco plants led to the isolation of a nucleoprotein which displayed tobacco mosaic virus activity. Stanley was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1946.

THEODOSIUS DOBZHANSKY (1900 - 1975) was a Russian-born American geneticist and evolutionary biologist. His 1937 work Genetics and the Origin of Species became a major influence on the Modern Synthesis. He was awarded the U.S. National Medal of Science in 1964 and the Franklin Medal in 1973. Before immigrating to the United States, Dobzhansky published 35 scientific works on entomology and genetics. Dobzhansky immigrated to the United States in 1927 on a work�"study scholarship from the International Education Board of the Rockefeller Foundation. Upon arriving in New York City, he joined the Drosophila Group at Columbia University working alongside Thomas Hunt Morgan and Alfred Sturtevant. Their work provided crucial information on Drosophila cytogenetics. He followed Morgan to the California Institute of Technology from 1930 to 1940. Dobzhansky's work was instrumental in spreading the idea that it is through mutations in genes that natural selection takes place. He returned to Columbia University from 1940 to 1962, then moved to the Rockefeller Institute (shortly to become Rockefeller University) until his retirement in 1971. Dobzhansky's work in the field of evolutionary genetics, with the help of Sewall Wright, integrated standards of the theoretical, natural historical, and experimental work. PROVENANCE: GEORGE COPLEY VARLEY: (1910 - 1983) was a British entomologist and a pioneer in the studies of insect population dynamics and was the author of Insect Population Ecology, an influential text. A colleague of David Lack during the war years, he conducted studies on insect population dynamics in Wytham Woods. In 1945, Varley became a reader in entomology at King's College, Newcastle-on-Tyne and in 1948 he was appointed Hope Professor at Oxford.

London: T. Vernor, 1787. FIRST EDITION. Recent cloth; spotting throughout both volumes with minor tear on lower blank corner on Aa4 in Vol. I. A good copy with illegible signature dated 1818 at top of title page. First edition of a series of letters written during the author’s time in Portugal (1778-1779) describing the current political and social climate of the country. The common thread throughout a majority of the letters is Costigan’s disapproval of the Portuguese government and resulting society. In one of his letters to his brother Charles, he writes: “My last, if I mistake not, has furnished you with an irrefragable proof, that it is a period of peculiar danger to the wellbeing of any state, when the whole acting and executive power is exclusively lodged in the hands of a single man, however great and extensive his talents may be” (I, p. 61). This is a very important work for the noting the foreign point of view of Portugal at a particularly sensitive time in the country’s history. The year before the author arrived, Maria Francisca succeeded her father, King Joseph, to the throne. She had been a fervant detractor to the Prime Minister, the Marquis of Pombal, who had been the de facto ruler of Portugal for over a quarter century. Although the queen retained many of the Marquis’ other ministers, she restored most of the privileges of the nobility and clergy, and released many of Pombal’s political prisoners. This time period was also one of cultural renovation, though tainted by political instability. There is little known of Costigan (fl. 1778-1814); the title page states that he was a Captain of the Irish Brigade. It has been suggested in several bibliographies that Costigan is a pseudonym of Coronel (or General) Ferrière, who was at the time on active service, and was using this method to criticize the administration (Innocencio, XIX p.180).

Russell. Savage took several of the West's most famous images at the celebration of the joining of the transcontinental railroads at Promontory Point, Utah in 1869. Savage also took the first photographs of what became Zion National Park.
