Description
Elizabeth, NY, 1956. Very Good -. Elizabeth, NJ: 1956. Large quarto scrapbook (33x26cm.); black paper over paste-paper boards; [27]ll. filled to two-thirds completion. Boards rather scuffed and toned, leaves brittle with shallow chips and tears to margins not affecting contents, preliminary leaf separated but present; overall Good to Very Good, contents remaining clean and sound. This hand-made picture book opens with an autograph poem dedicated to Bertha Battersby (1891-1960) and signed by a Henry S. Hulse, Jr., the presumed compiler of this work. The book includes four leaves of original typescript poetry; eight leaves of typescript narrative; and fifteen ink and watercolor illustrations die-cut where Battersby could put a small cut-out of her photograph if so desired. The work concludes with a local news clipping announcing Battersby's retirement after forty-three years of teaching, the final twenty-five years at Elizabeth and Newark, New Jersey. A wonderful record of the career of lifelong music teacher Bertha Battersby. The compiler, either a very devoted student, friend, or fellow-teacher, both lovingly and facetiously places his subject in light of major world events, opening with her birth: "There were two-world shaking developments of the very, very late nineteenth century to make their appearance on the American scene. One took place in Detroit--the horseless carriage. The more important event took place in Pennsylvania--Bertha Battersby." In this version of events, Battersby takes up women's rights ("So we speculatively see Bertha 'Suffragette' Battersby parading down Broad St., Elizabeth, demanding her equal rights--her right to vote"); contributes to the ascension of American capitalism alongside her peers Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone ("Bea's ever increasing interest in surf and turf was given a new stimulus with the psychic pay she was receiving in Elizabeth, so she allowed herself the luxury of an occasional two bucks at Saratoga or two bucks at Atlantic City"); and dances her way through prohibition ("But due to high caloric content of liquor, Bea wouldn't know anything about 'booze' or 'bathtub gin' or 'speakeasies' or 'grog-shops'"). The final section of the text is devoted to Battersby's career as the Supervisor of Music at the Burnet Street School in Elizabeth, where she mounted the final Christmas pageant to great acclaim. The news clipping announcing her retirement reproduces a photograph of Battersby at the event, looking a right jolly woman.

Description
Ravenna, Ohio: Ravenna Republican Press, 1913. Octavo (23 x 18 cm.), [viii], 241 pages. Includes index. Advertisements interspersed, in footers, and (for Knox Gelatine) in running headers. FIRST EDITION. A generous and ambitious recipe collection, described – unfairly – in April 1914 as "not particularly economical" in the Cleveland Public Library's acquisitions list. While it is true that the King's Daughters in Portage County evidently dabbled in "fancy cooking," the Nesselrode Pudding, Baked Alaska, and Boudin à la Reine appear alongside a fair number of entries on the order of Peanut Butter Sandwiches (the last appearing on the same page as Caviar Canapes). Economical solutions abound. Cottolene (a lard with cottonseed oil) is called for on at least a dozen occasions, and kornlet (canned green corn pulp) makes no fewer than six entrances. There are surprises scattered among roughly one thousand entries: Deviled Chestnuts, with cayenne and pickle; Stuffed Egg Plant, with English walnuts; a Raddish, Carrot, and Nut Salad, with olives; an Irish Moss Blanc-Mange; an Orange Cebolia (Cebolla?) Salad that apparently wandered in from Spain. And a mere sampling of the evidence for an Ohio preoccupation with fillings in a pastry shell: Lemon Maple Pie, Elderberry Pie, Rice Pie (with nut meats), Grape Pie, Rhubarb Date Pie, Pumpkin Raisin Pie, Sour Cream Pie, Apple Sauce Pie. ~ The Order of King's Daughters was founded in New York in 1886 by Margaret Bottome (1827-1906) as "a sisterhood of service" whose early members had Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian affiliations. Within a decade it had become the International Order of King's Daughters and Sons with branches in twenty-six states and a dozen foreign countries. Individual chapters operated independently. The women of Grace Episcopal Church in Ravenna–still known locally as "the church with the red front doors"–raised funds not only by selling the Cook Book but also through sponsored sales of cooking equipment, if the advertisement on page 199 is any indication. Text block solid and pages clean and tight, save for several corrections to the text in ink. In slightly soiled and shelf-worn grey oilcloth with navy blue lettering. Very good to near fine. [OCLC locates three copies; also four copies of a second edition published in 1920; Brown 3831 lists the second edition; not in Cagle].

Description
(Detroit: A.C. Dietsche) nd. (ca. 1909). Oblong Quarto. 24p. 47 color images of Detroit in its golden era (circa 1909). These beautiful souvenior books were printed by A.C. Dietsche and sold in his postcard shop on Woodward Avnue. Along with the many beautiful images, he shows us the building on Woodward Aveue where his large postcard and stationery were sold. Also one of the pictures shows a picture of The Deitsche Sight Seeing Company car (which held 22 or the larger car 40 passengers) which left from his postcard shop. Far more horse-drawn carriages than early automobiles (pictures here appear to be a few 1910 models) but the scenes depict a golden age for Detroit when civic beauty surpassed the vast industrial center it became just a few years later. A lovely copy, near fine in original gray wraps printed in orange.
