Description
Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1852. First Edition. First printing of 3,000 copies, with “lifed” for “lifted” on page 21, line 3, but this is no ordinary copy of the 1st printing. It’s in the publisher’s deluxe gift binding (likely less than 10% of the total first printing run), easily identified by the oval design on the front cover being in gilt, but also the gilt decorations, and the gilt edges, and only a small fraction of the 1st edition was issued in this binding. Slightest rubs to spine tips and corners, else in fine, fresh condition, exceptional quality for this 1st printing when it’s in this binding. Engraved frontispiece by Hobart and Robbins (who did Uncle Tom’s Cabin the same year) and 6 plates by Baker from designs by Billings. Half morocco case. Provenance: Ex–Frank Maier. Ex–the great Frank Hogan, at the pinnacle of antiquarian ancestry, and among the paramount libraries ever auctioned (1945). Ref: Clark, A 18.1.a. BAL, 7606. Blanck, Peter Parley to Penrod, page 6. For 5 years Hawthorne had pondered the idea of removing the starch from ancient fables, but when he decided to actually do it, he wrote A Wonder Book in only 8 weeks. He was at the peak of his powers, with all his magnificent style available, and he was under the spell of his neighbor, and at the time inseparable friend, Herman Melville, who was busily writing Moby–Dick (Moby is dedicated to Hawthorne and the nudges of each author on the other are evident in both books).  Hawthorne’s was a revolutionary re–sculpting of the Greek myths, a de–marbleizing of the Olympian gods, goddesses and heroes, where everyone’s a deity and no one cleans the fireplace, and in it he recast the immortals in a style suitable for young adults.  In his Preface, he wrote: “Children possess an unestimated sensitivity to whatever is deep or high, in imagination or feeling, so long as it is simple, likewise. It is only the artificial and the complex that bewilders them.” –the last line of the Preface’s wonderful last paragraph The 6 stories are: The Gorgon’s Head (Perseus and Medusa), The Golden Touch (King Midas), The Paradise of Children (Pandora and her box), The Three Golden Apples (Hercules, Atlas, and the Hesperides’ orchard), The Miraculous Pitcher (the kindness of Baucis and Philemon to 2 strangers, Zeus and Hermes in disguise), and The Chimæra (Bellerophon taming Pegasus and killing the monster).

Description
Italy: np, 1525. first edition. vellum; framed. Very Good. ILLUMINATED ANTIPHONAL LEAF WITH EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE HISTORIATED INITIAL OF KING DAVID AS PSALMIST. The recto features a stunning, large (6 1/4 x 7 in.) initial “T” featuring a miniature of David the Psalmist, captured mid-song with instrument in hand as an angel unfurls the opening of the Psalm 110 (Dixit Dominus)—a classic image of divine inspiration rendered with rich pigments and a thickly burnished gold initial “T”. The “T” frames and divides the image, with King David and the angel occupying the right half. The Psalm’s beginning (“DIXIT DOMINUS”) is displayed on the angel’s banner, emphasizing the divine inspiration for the Psalm. David is pictured with elegant flowing blue robes and, while he’s playing a stringed instrument, there is another harp lying beneath his feet. The left side of the “T” (for the opening “Tecum principium”) depicts a finely painted landscape, with a winding road, a bridge, and a town in the distance. The verso continues Psalm 110, but then transitions – with a large red-and-organge painted “R” into a section of Psalm 111 (Redemptionem misit Dominus populo suo…). Leaf size: 13x19.25 inches; archival framed to an overall size of 19x26 in.) Likely Italian, c.1550-1550. Vellum. Some mild toning and creasing to vellum. Some lines of cracking to color on miniature from the creasing. Small closed tear at top margin. Overall, the color (particularly the gilt) is exceptionally bright. A magnificent leaf.

Description
Yamagata Prefecture: 1819-68. Ushu province (today’s Yamagata Prefecture) has a long tradition of making sake. The region has abundant fresh water, and the climate is well-suited for growing sake rice. This archive of 22 manuscript reports was produced for local tax collectors by two sake manufacturers in Higashine village, Murayama, Ushu province: Genshirō 源四郎 (20 reports) and Hachizaemon 八左衛門 (two reports). Neither is in business today. Sake was a heavily regulated industry in Edo Japan and a major source of tax revenue. The shogunate also controlled production levels in order to conserve rice in times of shortage and to regulate prices. The government also required manufacturers to brew only in winter time to improve quality. These official reports contain statements of amounts of sake-making rice used and production levels of sake by number of barrels. One report was prepared in 1819, one in the 1820s, five in the 1830s, four in the 1840s, two in the 1850s, and nine in the 1860s. Most of the reports consist of four folding leaves of text. In fine condition. The archive’s original wrapper is present.

Part of Brill's The Northern World Series: North Europe and the Baltic c. 400-1700 AD, Peoples, Economies and Cultures, Volume 15. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Nils Blomkvist discusses how the Baltic Rim was initially Europeanized between 1075 and 1225 AD. He compares the indigenous civilisations to the prevailing western European one. After the expansive Viking period, European penetration became a process of discovery. The importance of the Catholic Reform movement and its unintentional ties to the formation of an endurable commodity market are outlined. Clashes and compromises are investigated in case studies of the Kalmarsund region, Gotland and the Daugava valley. Dissimilar cases of state formation are compared: those of Sweden and Livonia. Many classical scholarly problems are revisited. A new approach to the period's narrative sources brings to life Scandinavian, German, Russian, Finno-Ugrian and Baltic attitudes and day-to-day concern in the midst of a change of epic dimensions.
