Description
1827. First Edition. (COOPER, James Fenimore). The Red Rover, a Tale. By the Author of The Pilot, etc., etc. Paris: Hector Bossange, 1827. Three volumes. Small octavo, early full black polished calf, gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled endpapers and edges. $6800.First edition, published in Paris during Cooper's extended visit to France, preceding both the English and American editions, of Cooper’s eighth novel, a maritime adventure, handsomely bound. In the 1820s Cooper established himself as the leading American novelist with the successful publication and popularity of The Pilot (1824) and especially The Last of the Mohicans (1826). ""Though Cooper's financial problems had been severe, by 1826 he had solved them"" (ANB). As a result of brisk sales of his novels, in 1826 ""Cooper then fulfilled a longstanding desire to take his family to Europe. He stopped briefly in London to arrange for the publication of the as yet unfinished Prairie and went on to Paris, where he remained until February 1828. He completed The Prairie there and also wrote The Red Rover (1827). Cooper's reputation had preceded him to Europe, and he soon found himself moving in the best Paris society"" (ANB). Red Rover was written during Cooper's stay in Paris, right after he completed publication of The Prairie. The story concerns a pirate and a young officer in the British Navy who is tasked with apprehending him in the Americas. The two find common ground and the pirate, Red Rover, is ultimately shown to be as principled as his Navy counterparts. Red Rover, the second of Cooper's maritime novels, is one of American literature's most powerful love letters to life at sea. Bound with half titles. This first edition precedes the London first English edition of 1827 and the first American edition published in Philadelphia in 1828. BAL 3837. See Spiller & Blackburn A9. Bookplate.Text nearly fine with only very occasional faint foxing; early calf-gilt bindings with expert repairs to joints, spine ends and corners. An excellent copy of this rarity.

Description
[Charleston?, 1904. 78, [12] pp. Original printed wrappers and staples. Untrimmed, wrappers lightly worn, Very Good plus. A 1904 event, mentioned in the Preface, is the most recent date noted in this book. The author seeks to assure that "justice is done" to "those men, honored him with their command and followed through the dangers and troubles of 1876," a turbulent era which restored White Supremacy to South Carolina and the election of Wade Hampton as Governor. The Rifle Club is praised "for the practical prevention of aggressions on the part of he negro race, under the vile leadership of Northern Adventurers, which would have led to bloodshed." Reconstruction was "beyond doubt, the glomiest era in the life of the people of South Carolina. . . Twelve years of bitter humiliation, of struggle against poverty and privation, of anxiety, of danger, and of universal distress and anguish." The African Slaves were "wholly incapable of freedom," and roamed "incontrollable idleness and vice. . . The negro became insolent and aggressive in his conduct towards his white employers, and generally toward all native white men, women and children." To the rescue of the beleaguered whites came the Carolina Rifle Club, "a volunteer private police force to guard their own women and children and their own lives and liberty." Because President Hayes has recognized Wade Hampton as the legitimate Governor of South Carolina, the Carolina Rifle Club may honorably disband. OCLC 910960 [18] as of June 2025. Description
München [Munich]: Friederich Adolf Ackermann, 1893. Very good.. First edition of a stunning large picture book chronicling a festival and concert put on by Grandville-style humanized animals. Best known for his collections of fairy tales and folk tales, Bechstein's considerable artistic skills have been largely under-appreciated in the 21st century. The influence of Grandville is evident in his style, as is that of his naturalist uncle Johann Matthäus Bechstein. This copy bears the ownership marks of Professor J. Henry Senger, a professor of German at the University of California, Berkeley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was an associate of John Muir, and one of the founding members of the Sierra Club. 12.25'' x 15.5''. Original green publisher's cloth binding with large color pictorial paste-on and gilt stamped titles. Fore-edges red and gilt gauffered. Color pictorial endpapers of a variety of songbirds. 15 full-page color illustrations with black-and-white illustrations throughout. [68] pages. Ink owner's name to verso of front flyleaf, dated "[18]94." 19th century bookplate of J. Henry Senger to verso of front flyleaf. Paste-on uniformly toned; corners and spine ends lightly bumped, with some loss repaired at spine foot. Occasional small closed tears to margins. A bright copy.

Description
Chicago: Reilly & Lee, 1925. Very good plus.. Early printing this classic early Oz title, Baum's reluctant return to Oz becoming a beloved entry in the series. First published in 1913, PATCHWORK GIRL was Baum's capitulation to write book-length Oz stories again after attempting to retire the series with THE EMERALD CITY OF OZ (1910) - much like other authors dogged by one successful franchise, such as Arthur Conan Doyle and his Sherlock Holmes stories. As with the return of Sherlock Holmes, this return of Oz was received with acclaim. 9'' x 6.5''. Original blue pictorial cloth stamped in red and yellow, Woozy on spine embellished in red (Bienvenue printing 1925-29). Color pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Neill in color and black and white. Description
[N.p., likely Constantinople, 1891. Good plus.. 38pp. Original printed wrappers. Dampstaining to front wrapper, some dust-soiling to wrappers, moderate edge wear, a few small chips. Mild, even toning to text, but otherwise clean. A personal memoir, written for his four children, by Elias Riggs, missionary and director of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in Greece and Turkey. Elias Riggs (1810-1901) was an important Presbyterian minister and missionary, and also a noted linguist. While serving in the Ottoman Empire, he helped to translate the Bible into Bulgarian and Armenian, and published a Bulgarian grammar. Here, Riggs writes of his life and career from four years old until he concludes his story at the age of eighty-one. In between, Riggs details his early life, his schooling at Amherst College and Andover Theological Seminary, his wide-ranging career as a missionary, and more, peppering his narrative throughout with family anecdotes. The text also includes a short Appendix printing a memoir by Riggs of his wife, Martha Jane Dalzel Riggs, entitled, "A Missionary for Fifty-Five Years." OCLC reports just five total copies -- four in the U.S. (Columbia, Yale, New York Historical Society, and Emory) and one in Turkey. A highly-readable memoir from an important American missionary.

Unable to partake in physical activity, she immersed herself in literature, which proved to be her greatest pleasure. Some years later, she entered the publishing industry while she was still quite young, writing for magazines. Soon, she became the associate editor of T.S. Arthur's Lady's Home Magazine, to which she also contributed various pieces. Following the publication of her first novel Living and Loving in 1857, Townsend then wrote a number of popular novels for girls, including Amy Deane (1862), Janet Strong (1865), and A Boston Girl's Ambitions (1887). In addition to composing fiction and historical sketches, she taught rhetoric at the Family School for Young Ladies in Massachusetts, which was run by Dioclesian Lewis. Townsend lived with Dr. Lewis and his wife until 1881 and, after their passing, she lived with the Lewis' successors. The rest of her life was unmarked by tragedy or incident, and she spent her days writing, reading, and going to Boston to stay with friends up until her death in Arlington.
