Description
Washington D.C.: [No publisher], 1925 First edition. Signed by Walter Johnson in brown ink on his arm on the top of the game box. Brown wooden framed display, matted in red, with top panel of red, green, and yellow Walter Johnson Base Ball Game box, side panel of box, baseball field board, 10 silver game tokens, seven red tokens, and three purple tokens pasted to board (red and purple tokens not issued with the game), two scorecards (one filled, the other unfilled), and scarce teetotum spinner. Near fine, with light scuffing to the playing board, and a few light tears to the top panel of the box. Overall, a wonderful signed display of this early 20th century baseball board game. The Walter Johnson Base Ball Game is a board game in which players use a baseball field board, silver game tokens, and a unique metal teetotum to simulate the game of baseball. According to Sports Collectors Daily, the game "has become one of the most popular and sought after antique sports board games." Walter Johnson, nicknamed "Big Train'' due to the blinding speed of his fastball, is one of the greatest pitchers in MLB history. He played 21 seasons for the Washington Senators (1907-1927) and won the pitching triple crown three times. He was among the first group of players inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936, along with Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, and Christy Mathewson.. Signed. First Edition. Framed Display. Near Fine.

Description
1857. [13 serial parts, FINE] An Unfashionable Novel. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. [In thirteen monthly serial parts.] London: Chapman and Hall, March 1857 - March 1858. Original cream-colored printed wrappers. First Edition, complete in the 13 monthly serial parts. Per the sub-title, this is a novel of the London streets, specifically of boys drawn into lives of crime (Oliver Twist and the Artful Dodger come to mind). Augustus and Henry Mayhew were journalists and novelists, perhaps best known for their 1840s co-editorship of the humor periodical Punch, but by the 1850s both (especially Henry) were more into social reform. It is interesting to note that while the front wrapper of the first five parts reads "By The Brothers Mayhew," in the final eight parts is inserted (between "By" and "The") "Augustus Mayhew | one of". This was because during this serialization, brother Henry veered off to concentrate on his own related work of nonfiction, "London Labour and London Poor." Included in each part are two plates by Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"] -- some of them "dark plates" that were now possible, thanks to a new process. Browne's illustrations are very appropriate, bearing headings such as "Philip at the Pauper School," "A Midnight Picnic," "The Tramps," and "The Fight in the Vagrant Ward." Included are ALL of the ads and slips and preliminary leaves specified by Wolff; in fact, this set includes additional leaves in Parts VI and XII. Condition of the thirteen parts is just about FINE: there is a small ink mark in the upper margin of Part VIII's front and rear wrapper, and the two plates in Part I have some marginal foxing. In all, the set is remarkably clean and intact, and in about half of the parts, the leaves are still unopened. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. Wolff 4683 (his Part XIII reverts to "The Brothers Mayhew" on the front wrapper, but in this set Part XIII is uniform with Parts VI-XII). Serial parts of a Mayhew novel are MUCH scarcer than parts by a major author like Dickens.

Very good plus.
Description
Washington DC: National Council Against Conscription, 1948. Very good plus.. [16]pp. Original self wrappers, stapled. Minor wear and soiling to outer leaves. Subtitled, "A Report on Racial Segregation in the Armed Forces," the present pamphlet calls for an end to the practice through reasoned discussion presented in sections such as "Army Evaded Race Clause in War Draft," "Army Refuses to Use Skilled Negroes," "Army Plans to Continue Race Policy," "Army Wants Draft Principle," "Army Prejudice Endangers Foreign Policy," "Segregation Injures Reserves," "Civil Rights Commission Urges Change," and "'Super-Race' Army Proposed." The latter is particularly interesting, arguing that the Army's consideration of allowing white soldiers to form all-white units is "an essentially fascist idea. Army divisions composed entirely of those who believe they belong to a superior race would be dangerous to America." The seven authors of the pamphlet call for Congressional action and the sign their names in type at the end as members of the "Special committee on Race Relations of the National Council Against Conscription." Interestingly, a pencil note on the last page notes the publication date as June 1948; President Truman issued Executive Order 9981 a month later, desegregating the American Armed Forces. OCLC lists three institutional holdings, at NYPL, Swarthmore, and the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Description
(New York): Viking, 1989. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. First US edition, first printing, octavo size, 155 pp., inscribed and additionally signed by the author. This Lucy Ellmann's (b. 1956) debut novel, the winner of the Guardian Prize for Best First Novel. She went on to further awards, including being longlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction for her fourth novel, "Dot in the Universe" and shortlisted for the Believer Book Award (for the same novel); another novel, "Ducks, Newburyport" was short-listed for the Booker Prize in 2019; it won the Goldsmiths Prize for 2019 and the James Tait Black Prize for Fiction in 2020. A contemporary review of "Sweet Desserts" illuminates Ellmann's skills: "...an unsentimental eye for the incongruities of modern life; a bawdy sense of humor; and a distinctive voice, by turns angry and regretful, poetic and dyspeptic" (from a review by Michiko Kakutani published in the New York Times Book Review section June 6, 1989). This volume wonderfully inscribed by Ellmann thus: "For [name withheld], / With whom I dis- / cussed the possibility / of a diet solely consisting / of bananas, about / 20 years ago. / Much love, / Lucy". Signed copies appear somewhat scarce, as of this writing we see only one other signed copy online. Note that this is the first printing of the first US edition; the true first is the UK publication, which came out a year earlier, in 1988, which explains the review blurbs on the back panel of the dust jacket, noting the book won The Guardian Prize for Best First Novel. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter navy blue cloth over lavender paper-covered boards with pink lettering on the spine, lavender endpapers, Ellmann's inscription (as set forth above) on the half-title page, on the title page she crossed out her printed name and signed directly below, an Index (oddly for a novel) at the rear; octavo size (8 1/2" by 5 5/8"), pagination: [i-x] 1-145. The illustrated dust jacket shows the original price of $17.95, summary of the book on the front flap, author bio and black-and-white head shot on the back flap, the aforementioned review blurbs on the back panel. ___CONDITION: Volume near fine, the boards clean, the top corners gently bumped and the bottom corners straight, all without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light sunning to the top edges of the boards and toning to the text pages. The dust jacket also near fine, not price-clipped, clean, with minimal edgewear and sunning to the spine and top edges. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
London, 1860. London, 30 June 1860. Bifolium. 4pp. 180 x 111 mm. A few pin-holes but fine otherwise. From English physiologist and naturalist William B. Carpenter, who "helped shape the modern life sciences in Britain (Oxford DNB) through both his writings and his work as a teacher and administrator at what is now the University of London. Carpenter performed valuable researches in marine zoology, and was directly influential in persuading the British Admiralty to sponsor the Challenger expedition, the first major scientific study of the deep oceans. Carpenter is also recognized as one of the founders of the modern theory of the adaptive unconscious-he observed that the human perceptual system and the mechanism of human thought operates almost completely outside of conscious awareness. Carpenter's correspondent was the police magistrate and author John Paget. "I cannot let Mrs. Carpenter be the only one to express our hearty appreciation of the kind feeling on the part of Mrs. Paget and yourself, by which the beautiful gift which we had the pleasure of receiving from you yesterday has been prompted, as well as our admiration of the combined elegance and utility of the gift itself. Since its arrival, Mrs. Carpenter has for the first time informed me that she had been taken into your counsels in the matter; and I am very glad that without any intention of her own, your gift should have taken a form that so appropriately made her a participator in it. For her interest in Guy and her constant solicitude for his welfare have been, as I need scarcely tell you, in no degree inferior to my own. It gives us both great pleasure to have so substantial an expression of the satisfaction felt by Mrs. Paget and yourself in what we have endeavoured to do for him; and we trust, with her, that the influences and associations of early years may be pleasantly and usefully kept up on both sides by the continued friendship of our boys as they advance in life. With kindest wishes for the welfare and happiness of Mrs. Paget, yourself, and your family, believe me, Dear Mr. Paget, always yours most sincerely, William B. Carpenter." .

Description
New York: Greenberg: Publisher. Poor. (c.1950). First Edition. Softcover. [heavily worn with extensive creasing to covers; the spine covering is almost completely gone, but it's holding together -- just barely -- because it was stitched, not perfect-bound; rubber stamp of Kier's Book House on front endpaper and title page]. (B&W photographs) The first issue of this long-running annual round-up of the year's films and personalities. In the beginning (and for another year or two, I believe) this publication was issued in both a dust-jacketed hardcover edition and as a softcover, this example being the latter -- as as noted, with the binding almost shot. The front cover features small portrait hotos of Joan Fontaine, Cary Grant, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Barbara Stanwyck, Katharine Hepburn, and John Lund. The volume contains the first of the "Portrait Dolls of Famous Film Folk" (by artist Mary Green) full-page photo feature (including dolls of Greta Garbo, Greer Garson, W.C. Fields, Bing Crosby); the "Promising Personalities" sections includes Mario Lanza, Ruth Roman, Scott Brady; the volume is dedicated to silent film actress Clara Kimball Young. Ordinarily I would just discard a book in this condition -- but, well, it was the beginning of a long-running and much-loved series, and I just haven't got the heart to chuck the poor abused thing out. So I've made it super-cheap, just to help it find a new home. .
