Description: Seattle: Arts Resource Services, 1979. Very good. 8¼” x 10¾”. Perfect bound thin card wrappers. Pp. [8], 192. Very good: front wrapper partially detached and reinforced at the hinge with archival tape; both wrappers with some staining; some minor dogearring to leaves. This is a comprehensive directory documenting African Americans in the arts in the Seattle area circa 1979. From the preface: “To number the Black artists in the Seattle area at something less than a hundred would have been generous in 1972 . . . The recent growth and development of art activity in Seattle has been paralleled by the growth in numbers of artists and art activity in the Black community . . . Three hundred seventy-five artists were interviewed and somewhat less than two hundred are listed in this directory . . . We found artists actively pursuing nearly every facet of the fine and commercial arts. They are at all levels of development of their artistic careers and are into classical as well as pop or ethnic styles of their art. There are now three theatre companies, one ethnic dance company, two music schools . . . and more artists than ever.” One of the book's goals was to connect artists to artists, artists to employers and artists to resources. Further from the preface: “Our other goals were to expose the wealth of and indicate the magnitude of art activity in the Black community to the entire area . . . Most important, this directory is intended for use by businesses, agencies, governmental departments, schools, corporations, etc. We hope to stimulate them into thinking of ways in which artists can be employed and to hire them.” The directory of artists consumes a little over half the book, with genres broken up into eight categories: crafts, dancers, graphic artists, literary artists, musicians, photographers, theater artists and visual artists. At a minimum, each artist included a resume and some provided quotes. A couple dozen photographic images show some of the artists and their work including a couple of poems on an illustrated background. The second half of the book has six pages devoted to local arts organizations, with the rest of the book listing local, national and corporate resources. There's also a 15-page bibliography. An invaluable reference resource. OCLC locates eight copies.

Clementi was an Italian-born English composer, keyboard player, teacher, music publisher, entrepreneur, and piano manufacturer. Clementi was the principal teacher of several leading pianists of the 1820s and 1830s, and he had more informal contacts with many others during their formative years, for example Herz, Meyerbeer, Dussek, and perhaps Hummel. His didactic works, especially the Introduction to the Art of Playing on the Piano Forte, the op.36 sonatinas, and the Gradus ad Parnassum, became staples in the education of pianists at all levels.
