Note Hugh Latimer (c. 1487–1555) was one of the most powerful preachers of the English Reformation, rising from a former supporter of traditional Catholicism to become a leading Protestant voice under both Henry VIII and Edward VI. His sermons are marked by direct, vivid English, moral urgency, and sharp criticism of clerical corruption, emphasizing Scripture, repentance, and heartfelt faith over ceremony. Burned at the stake under Mary I alongside Nicholas Ridley, Latimer became a Protestant martyr. References ESTC S108327; STC 15282.
