Description
Le Livre des Livres. A fusion of poetry and art and one of Pierre Lecuire's most ambitious projects, this innovative and remarkable work is made up of two volumes of poetry. The idea for Le Livre des Livres was greatly inspired by the etching Les Trois Livres by Hercules Seghers, where the artist created figures out of books. The poems take on various universal themes, and Lecuire was determined to publish Livres de Livres completely on his own so he could have full control over the typography and style of the book as well as the ability to choose the artists, artists he considered to be the greatest of their time. Both volumes are held in an artistic binder signed by reknown 20th century bookbinder Pierre-Lucien Martin complete of chemise and slipcase. Each volume is bound in a full navy blue leather cover with a composition of wide vertical grooves, smooth spine, decorated with the golden title, linings and endpapers.LECUIRE (Pierre). These poems are illustrated by original engravings by artists such as Fermin Aguayo, Geneviève Asse, César, Serge Charchoune, Etienne-Martin, Claude Garache, Charles Marq, Jean Messagier, Henry Moore, Vera Pagava, Brigitte Simon, Arpad Szenès, Pierre Tal Coat, Raoul Ubac and Vieira da Silva. This copy is N 7, it is one of 25 numbered copies on paper à la forme du moulin de Larroque, with a suite of 22 signed and numbered engravings. It is part of a total edition of 130 copies. It includes an additional burin by Arpad Szenès on the frontispiece, a supplement of 2 artist's proofs by Vieira da Silva, an artist's proof by Geneviève Asse, an artist's proof by Serge Charchoune, an etching by Charchoune printed (5/5), and 3 artist's proofs by Charles Marq printed (3/5) and nine additional poems. All copies are signed by the artists and the poet. LECUIRE (Pierre). Le livre des livres. Volume II. Paris, Lecuire, 1982: The second volume was published in 1982 and also consists of 22 unpublished poems. Description
1819. (ADDISON and STEELE, et al.). The Spectator. New Edition, Carefully Corrected from the Originals, with Historical, Biographical, and Explanatory Notes. London: J. Johnson et al., 1808. Eight volumes. Octavo, contemporary full navy straight-grain morocco gilt, elaborately gilt- and blind-tooled spines and covers, raised bands, all edges gilt. $1600.Early 19th-century edition of this pioneering English periodical, with engraved frontispiece portrait of Joseph Addison in Volume I, handsomely bound in contemporary straight-grain morocco-gilt.Presenting essays by Addison, Richard Steele, Alexander Pope, Thomas Tickell and others, The Spectator, originally published 1711-14, ""appeared daily, and was immensely popular, particularly with the new growing middle-class readership… The papers are mainly concerned with manners, morals, and literature. Their object is 'to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality'"" (Drabble, 925-6). Addison helped set the pattern and establish the vogue for the periodical in the 18th-century, and cultivated a receptive audience for the emerging art form of the novel. ""The Spectator made a mark in English literature, and fixed a form which was adopted with servile fidelity by many succeeding periodicals till the end of the century"" (DNB). Upper corners of Volume VI gently bumped, a few others lightly rubbed. Near-fine condition, very handsomely bound.

Columbia. No binding. Near Fine. London, New York: Columbia, 1941-1942. Collection of 12 vintage original black-and-white photos. Except as noted, all are 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) and overall near fine. One borderless UK 9 1/2 x 7 1/2" (24 x 19 cm) photo of Glynis Johns, with printed text and date stamp on verso. Three UK photos, all with text on verso. One shows actress Elisabeth Bergner, who originally started as the female lead but then dropped out (as an ardent anti-Nazi Austrian living in London, she became terrified that, if the Nazis were successful in invading London, she would summarily lose her life). Eight US photos under the American release title The Invaders, six with text on verso, one with small chip in left blank margin. "49th Parallel (released in the United States as The Invaders) is a 1941 British epic war drama film, the third made by the team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. It stars Leslie Howard, Laurence Olivier, Anton Walbrook, Raymond Massey, Glynis Johns and Eric Portman. The plot involves a German U-boat crew that is stranded in Canada and attempts to cross into the then-neutral United States." (Wikipedia)

Description
First edition of this influential and extensive study of the communitarian ideal in the United States. Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901) emigrated to the United States as a child, and went on to have a varied career as sailor, journalist and writer. His grandson Charles Bernard Nordhoff is the famous historian of the Bounty. In The Communistic Societies of the United States, Nordhoff recounts his travels to many of the socialistic societies which became popular in the nineteenth century, most famously the Shakers of Mount Lebanon, the Rappite township at 'Harmony' and the Oneida Community. As Nordhoff points out in his Introduction, he hoped that a study of these communities might provide 'useful hints toward the solution of the labor question'. Throughout, the work displays a thoroughness and lack of hysteria which supports his claim to have 'thought it best to give at first an impartial and not unfriendly account of each commune.' Howes N177, Adams: Radical Literature, p. 47. An indispensable source for the study of communal societies.

Description
Brunswick: The Eastern Baptist, 1837. Good. Toned with some chipping, short tears, spotting. Letter folds.. Vol. III, No. 6 of the "Eastern Baptist", inscribed in contemporary ink to "Hon. Tim. J. Carter, with the respects of The Editor". Timothy Jarvis Carter (1800-1838) served as Democratic representative for Maine from March 1837 until his death in 1838. The present issue reports on recent religious conventions and meetings locally (e.g. the Maine Baptist Convention), a recent Presidential address, and includes a miscellany of poetry, thoughts on education, and a fascinating column on the "Use of Squirrels" which contemplates the industriousness of the little creatures and credits Britain's prosperity to them in what we hope is a tongue-in-cheek manner. Printed bifolium (19.5" by 13.25"), pp. [4], printed in five columns. The Eastern Baptist "began publishing in Richmond, Maine in 1835. [It] Ceased in May, 1839, when it merged with Zion's advocate to form Zion's advocate and eastern Baptist" (AAS).
