1987. First Edition. Signed. WALLACE, David Foster. The Broom of the System. (New York): Penguin, (1987). Octavo, pictorial white paper wrappers. $2000.First edition, softcover issue, of Wallace’s acclaimed debut novel, signed on the title page by David Foster Wallace. In the tradition of Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, Wallace's first novel, written while he was a 24-year-old MFA student, ""attempts to give us a portrait, through a combination of Joycean word games, literary parody and zany picaresque adventure, of a contemporary America run amok… Wallace possesses a wealth of talents—a finely-tuned ear for contemporary idioms; an old-fashioned story-telling gift (as evidenced, in particular, by the stories within stories contained in this novel); a seemingly endless capacity for invention and an energetic refusal to compromise"" (New York Times). The hardcover (Viking) and softcover (Penguin) issues were published simultaneously. Usual mild toning to interior. A fine signed copy.

Description
New York: The Viking Press, 1949 First edition, first printing. Publisher's orange cloth, with an illustration of the play's stage setting and the spine lettering in brown, pictorial endpapers illustrated with a reproduced drawing of the play's stage setting by the play's original set designer Jo Mielziner; original first issue dust jacket with illustration of the protagonist Willy Loman designed by Joseph Hirsch. Near fine book with light toning to spine and edges, and slight lean to spine; very good unclipped dust jacket with light wear to edges, lightly nicked corners, a bit of chipping to spine ends. Overall, a vibrant copy without any fading. Death of a Salesman is Miller's best-known play, about Willy Loman, an aging traveling salesman who struggles financially and emotionally after losing his job. The plot was largely influenced by Miller's own experience as part of a prosperous immigrant family who achieved the American Dream only to be later devastated by the Great Depression. The story is told in stream-of-consciousness style, with Loman drifting between the reality of his shabby apartment and the idyllic memories of a more prosperous yesteryear. This literary technique is achieved in the theater setting through Loman's conversation with characters who exist only his imagination, as indicated by the play's half-title. Death of a Salesman debuted on Broadway at the Morosco Theatre in New York on February 10, 1949, starring Lee J. Cobb as Willy Loman and under the direction of Elia Kazan. A literary and theatrical success, Death of a Salesman won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1949.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
Paris, 1709. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Nostradamus by J. Sauvé. Contemporary mottled calf, spine and label gilt, board edges gilt. Obscured inscription on the title. A very good copy. First edition thus, second overall, of this critical examination of Nostradamus’ prophecies regarding the monarchy of France. The text opens with a biography of the seer before transcribing and explaining his predictions about the time between the reigns of Henry II (1547-1559) and Louis XIV (1643-time of publication). Guynaud explicates 180 of the 1000 individual quatrains from Nostradamus’ Centuries. He vehemently supports the seer, attacks his opponents, and attempts to prove the veracity of his prophecies. First published in 1693, this edition was revised and expanded from the original text. Benazra 283; Caillet 4882; Chomarat-Laroche 320.

Red morocco with title in gilt. Near fine
Description
Madrid: First Edition, 1962. Hardcover. Red morocco with title in gilt. Near fine. 299 pages. 15.5 cm. Presentation copy - "To Anne and Ranaldo as a souvenir of a few hours in Portugal, With sincere affection, Conchita, Lisbon 1964." Privately rebound with personal photos and letters tipped in. Text in Spanish. Autobiographical account of Cintrón's life and career as a female matador. Cintrón (1922-2009) was born in Chile, the daughter of the first Puerto Rican Graduate of West Point and an American Mother. Beginning at 13, she learned bullfighting in Lima, Peru where her family had settled. Citrón, the most famous female torera of the 20th century, was perhaps the only bullfighter to combine the two main styles of the sport in the same fight - Spanish, in which the matadora is on foot, and Portuguese, in which the bullfighter is on horseback. As her fame grew, she became a media darling. Her legend was sealed in 1940, when she was gored in Guadalajara, Mexico, collapsed, and was carried to the infirmary. Upon regaining consciousness, she returned to the ring, killed the bull, and collapsed again. She ended her career spectacularly in Jaén, Spain, in October 1950. This was during the Franco regime, when women weren't allowed to fight bulls on foot. She did just that, was arrested, and released to cheering crowds. She married Francisco de Castelo Branco in 1951, settled in Lisbon, Portugal, and raised a large family. Ranald H. Macdonald and Anne Thomptson Macdonald were lifetime friends of Cintrón. Anne was the founder of Recording for the Blind and Ranald was a businessman and former governor of the New York Stock Exchange. The letters and photos tipped and laid in to this privately rebound copy show a fondness and closeness that lasted for many years.

Description
S. l.: By the author, 1951. Very good. Two caricatures, in pencil, the Antonelli one dated '51, the other one undated; loose sheets, 11 1/2 x 5 3/4 and 10 1/2 x 7 3/4; a few minor nicks to top edge and very light creasing; very good or better condition. Delightful and well-accomplished, the caricatures depicted two giants of the baseball world - John August Antonelli (1930 - 2020) and Ernesto Natali Lombardi (1908 - 1977). Antonelli, a left-handed starting pitcher, would make history with the biggest sign-on bonus with the Boston Braves ($52 000) and would go on to become six-time National League All-Star, playing with the Boston and Milwaukee Braves, Nesw York and San Francisco Giants, and Cleveland Indians. Once called "the slowest man to ever play major league baseball well," Lombardi would be All-Star for seven seasons, playing as a catcher for the Brooklyn Robins, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Braves, and New York Giants.
