Description
8/5/47. Basil O’Connor was a New York lawyer and philanthropist who was an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. With Roosevelt, he started two foundations for the rehabilitation of polio patients and the research on polio prevention and treatment.Roosevelt appointed O'Connor to the American Red Cross, of which he served as chairman (1944–47) and president (1947–49). In this capacity he also chaired the League of Red Cross Societies from 1945 to 1950.O'Connor declined payment for his leadership of the Red Cross. ""For 20 years I have gladly given over a large part of my time to charitable work, particularly to the fight against infantile paralysis sponsored by President Roosevelt,"" O'Connor said. ""I have never accepted or received any compensation for that work. It therefore goes without saying that I shall accept no salary as chairman of the American National Red Cross.""Typed letter signed, on White House letterhead, Washington, May 8, 1947, to Basil O’Connor, appointing him to head the American Red Cross. “Pursuant to the provisions of Section 5, as amended, of the Act to incorporate the American National Red Cross, I hereby appoint you a Governor of that corporation to serve on its Board of Governors for the term set forth in said Section 5, as amended, and I designate you to act as the principal officer of the corporation with such title and such functions as may from time to time be prescribed in the by-laws of said corporation. The term for which you are hereby appointed shall become effective at the close of the National Convention of American National Red Cross on Thursday, June 12, 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio.”When O’Connor resigned in 1949, Truman wrote him saying, “You have directed Red Cross activities through momentous years, both in war and in peace, and not the least of your contributions has been that which you made in piloting a complete reorganization plan through the Congress.”A fascinating letter making an important appointment.

Description
1886. First Edition. Signed. RICHARDS, Alfred Bates, WILSON, Andrew, and BADDELEY, St. Clair. A Sketch of the Career of Richard F. Burton. London: Waterlow & Sons, 1886. 12mo, original half brown cloth, stiff glazed decorated card boards; pp. [4] 96. $1500.Second edition of this contemporary biography of “the celebrated Eastern traveler, author and linguist,” with photographic frontispiece portrait. This copy from the library of Alfred Kinsey’s Institute for Sex Research, with its bookplate and Kinsey’s ownership inscription (“Alfred C. Kinsey, 6-18-45”).Three different authors trace the life, travels and adventures of a ""very extraordinary man, who has toiled every hour and minute… distinguishing himself in every possible way. He has done more than any other six men in Her Majesty's dominions, and is one of the best, noblest and truest that breathes"" (page 37). ""This is a curious little book, often overlooked in studies of Burton, but it deserves closer attention. Of special note is the frontispiece, pp. 84-96, which prints a scrap of Burton's autobiography and pages 79-82, which contain a 'List of Captain Burton's Works'"" (Casada 369). With Woodburyprint photographic frontispiece, bearing Burton's printed facsimile signatures in English and Arabic. This edition reprints and updates A Short Sketch of the Career of Captain Richard F. Burton by ""An Old Oxonian"" (1880). Penzer, 305-06. Decorative monogrammatical bookplate of C.J. Peacock. Owner signature of Alfred C. Kinsey, with bookplate of the Institute for Sex Research. Kinsey founded the Institute in 1947, in part, ""to create the most complete and most scientific data bank on human sexuality ever compiled… Kinsey hired and carefully trained a team of interviewers to gather more case histories… and he also collected a staggering cache of books, 'how to' manuals, primitive artifacts and implements of an erotic or sexual nature; these were housed at the Institute's library"" (ANB). Considering the translated erotica he published through the Kama Shastra Society, Burton likely would have appreciated Kinsey's work. Kinsey had an interest in Burton's: in 1948, in fact, he enlisted Gershon Legman (best known for his scholarly studies of erotic humor) as a bibliographer to ""help locate such obscure rarities as… the 16 original volumes of Richard Burton's Arabian Nights with their complex and lengthy footnotes on Levantine sexuality"" (Mikita Brottman, Funny Peculiar). Title and library marking written on spine in white ink.Interior generally clean, with foxing mostly confined to free endpapers; Kinsey's inscription still easily legible. Front joint tender, small, old repair to foot of rear joint; boards with light edge-wear, mild toning to decorations. An excellent copy of a scarce work in near-fine condition, with a notable and intriguing provenance.

Description
1984. Very Good. The note, on Lillian Gish's personal stationary, reads, "Dear Jim and Steve: Here is the money for your new table. Hope it turns out to be just what you want and need. With much love at Christmas, and every day of 1985, and always. Yours grateful, Lillian." The letter was to James Frasher and his boyfriend. Frasher was Gish's manager and confidante. As a young man he had appeared in a few Western movies, most notably, as a supporting player to Gene Autry. Gish of course was one of the most illustrious of movie stars of the Silent Era, starring in "The Birth of a Nation", in 1915. With the advent of sound, she concentrated more on theater, but occasionally returned to the screen, most notably, in "Duel in the Sun", 1946, and "The Night of the Hunter", 1955. Her swan song, "The Whales of August", was released in 1987, over seventy years after her first appearance in movies. The second item on offer is a mounted photo of a middle aged Gish, with her writing around the edge in ink, "With every good wish, Lillian Gish". Finally, we include two photos, both mounted on a tall sheet, that were definitely personal, or non-publicity, photos of Gish. One, in black and white, shows her posing with her sister, Dorothy Gish, and The letter is folded and has minor wear.

Walpole, New Hampshire: Printed by David Carlisle for Thomas & Thomas, 1799. Later edition. Contemporary tree-calf, rebacked, new spine label and endpapers; interior browning due to the quality of the paper, with one small tear on the lower corner of leaf C5 with loss of some letters. Later edition of this classic work, a scarce New Hampshire imprint. This inventive work of fiction has been attributed to several different authors, including Benjamin Victor and Daniel Defoe. It contains a series of stories in which each new one is prompted by a character and/or situation from the previous one. First printed in London in 1726, early editions included a description of Philadelphia, believed to be authentic according to Cox and Sabin. Later editions did away with this passage.
