Description
Los Angeles, 1986. LARGE PORTRAIT OF WARHOL. SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. NO. 24 OF 25. One of Gorman's most iconic images, demonstrating his mastery of light and shadow, is his portrait of Andy Warhol. Taken one year before Warhol's death in 1987, the image captures a side of him not often seen, an austere and slightly more intimidating appearance. But with the invariable shock of white hair, it is immediately recognisable as Andy. From an edition of 25, this large-format 23 x 18.75 in portrait (as opposed to smaller editions of 19 x 15 in and 14 x 11 in) is signed, dated and numbered by Gorman on the reverse. Image: 23 x 18.75 in Sheet: 24 x 20 in Frame: 28.5 x 24 in GORMAN, GREG. b. 1949. Andy Warhol, Los Angeles, 1986. Silver gelatin photograph, no. 24 of 25. Gorman's authentication stamp signed in pencil on reverse. Fine, handsomely framed.

Description
14/07/1843. John Tyler was the first vice president in American history to succeed to the presidency upon the death of an incumbent president (William Henry Harrison). In the 1840 presidential campaign Tyler, a Southern Democrat, ran with a northern Whig on the top of the ticket; he was chosen for political reasons rather than his suitability as a successor. Upon Harrison’s demise, most Whigs regarded Tyler as “His Accidency,” a usurper. Because the Constitution was vague about how to proceed in such circumstances, Tyler’s was a crisis of legitimacy. Yet, often imperious and tactless, he did not hesitate to assert, “I am president.” As president, he adopted a strong policy of rewarding his political friends and ignoring his foes. Here we see him rewarding a newspaper editor who had stuck with him. Autograph Letter Signed as President, Washington, July 14, 1843, to Mr. Shearer. “Mr. Lambert who will hand you this has proven himself to be a true friend for 12 months past. He has been the Editor of a paper in Wisconsin which has openly and ably maintained our course. He is poor and I have agreed to say to you that if he can be provided for I should be grateful.”The Lambert spoken of was Davis Lambert of the Wisconsin Enquirer, who is the only Lambert that shows up in ""Guide to Wisconsin Newspapers”. Also helping to confirm this, Lambert’s paper closed in June 1843, shortly before this letter was written.

1914. [Sendak copy in 1914 dj] New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1914. Original olive-brown cloth, with dust jacket. First American Edition, which consisted of 2000 copies and was published one day after Dent's London edition. Novelists covered by James include Robert Louis Stevenson, Emile Zola, Gustave Flaubert, Honoré de Balzac and George Sand. This was one of several James titles that was unfortunately bound for Scribner's in this unattractive olive-brown cloth that is very prone to soil and fading. This, however, would be a fine copy were it not for some cracking of the endpapers. The clean, unfaded exterior is due to the presence of the original dust jacket, in very good condition (edge-wear that is minor except for one chip affecting about one-half of "SCRIBNER'S" at the foot of the spine). Supino 73.2.0; Edel & Laurence A73b. Provenance: from the personal library of author Maurice Sendak. He did not often sign or affix bookplates (and none is here), but included with this set is a certificate from the auction house identifying this as Lot 185 in the February 2023 sale of Sendak's library -- "sold on behalf of the Rosenbach Museum.

Description
Philadelphia and London:: J. B. Lippincott, 1910., 1910. 26 cm. Thick 8vo. xxxi, [1], 800 pp. Color frontis., 712 illus. (some color), index. Original green blind and gilt-stamped cloth. Signature of Dr. A. R. Allen; bookplate of Frederick A. Frye. Very good. "Dr. Willard soon discovered that his true passion lied in orthopaedics and thus led the effort to organize the nation's first freestanding Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He was appointed lecturer in orthopaedic surgery in 1887, clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery in 1889, and professor of orthopaedic surgery in 1903. His contributions were instrumental in the establishment of both the orthopaedic ward in the Agnew wing of University Hospital and the Infirmary for Nervous Disease at Penn. At various points in his career, he served as chairman of the surgical section of the American Medical Association, president of the American Surgical Association, and president of the American Orthopaedic Association. One of his crowning achievements was the establishment of the Widener Memorial School for Crippled Children – an institution dedicated to the education and training of children maimed by disease. In recognition of his work, the University appointed DeForest Willard the first chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery – an office which he held from 1889 to the time of his death in 1910. Despite his numerous professional accomplishments, Dr. Willard preferred to be remembered for his acts of kindness to his fellow man rather than for his awards and accolades." Voleti & Levin.
