Photographs are fine, some very light wear to cover, near fine condition overall and remarkably well preserved.
Description
Paris, 1930. Set of 36 miniature photographs in a heavy cardstock folded cover, bearing advertisements for Casino de Paris, Columbia Records, and Bakerfix. Photographs are fine, some very light wear to cover, near fine condition overall and remarkably well preserved.. Issued at the height of Josephine Baker’s international celebrity and likely produced in connection with the Casino de Paris revue Paris qui Remue (c. 1930), this souvenir set of photographs gathers thirty-six miniature photographic portraits presenting the performer in a range of studio and theatrical contexts. Photographers include George Hoyningen-Huene, Henri Manuel, and Walery (Count Stanisław Julian Ignacy Ostroróg) . The folder, advertising Paris qui Remue, Casino de Paris, Columbia Records, and Bakerfix hair preparations, reflects the coordinated commercial promotion surrounding her performances during this period. The images correspond to a moment in Baker’s career when her public image shifted from the earlier “Revue Nègre” persona toward a more formalized revue and recording star presentation aimed at broader European audiences. Souvenir miniature sets such as this were produced for sale to theatre patrons and visitors and are infrequently encountered complete. We find no record of this one in commerce or auction records, in OCLC or elsewhere.

Description
[N.p., probably San Francisco, 1962. Very good.. 20pp. of mimeographed text, on variously-sized and variously-colored paper stocks, paper-clipped. Minor overall wear. A long and detailed compilation of notes compiled by the Northern California Negro Commission, apparently overseen by the Communist Party of California between April and July 1962. The notes begin with an Introduction that provides context for the commission's activities. The Introduction begins: "After long discussion in this area, it is our considered opinion that bold new program tactics and theoretical considerations must be developed on the Negro question in the coming period if the Communist Party is to contribute materially to the struggle for Negro liberation from this point on." The notes detail reasons that the position of African Americans must be reevaluated based on various cultural, legal, political, and other developments. Other sections discuss the "national character of the struggle of the Negro in the U.S.," the economic position of African Americans, "Negro Suffrage in relation to the overall question," a long discussion of "The Muslim Movement" ("Significant in respect to the role of the Negro in the working class is the rising black nationalist, economically oriented Black Muslim movement" with discussions of Elijah Muhammad), and some conclusions. We could locate no other copies of these notes, but do not rule out the possibility they exist in some larger archives of African American and/or Communist material from 1960s California.

Description
1967. Thompson, William C. Dynamic Model Investigation of the Rough-Water Landing Characteristics of a Spacecraft (1967), a NASA Technical Note documenting the system of spacecraft recovery and safety engineering in early U.S. crewed spaceflight. The material documents the system of ocean landing analysis and recovery protocols through scaled experimental modeling, revealing how NASA engineers evaluated the physical forces acting on spacecraft during splashdown. The report demonstrates the process by which data from controlled simulations informed design tolerances, crew safety thresholds, and operational procedures, providing primary-source evidence for the study of aerospace engineering, Cold War science, and human spaceflight systems. Thompson, William C. Dynamic Model Investigation of the Rough-Water Landing Characteristics of a Spacecraft. Washington, D.C.: National Aeronautics and Space Administration, April 1967. NASA Technical Note NASA TN D-3774. First edition. Quarto, approximately 20 or more pages. Staple-bound in original printed wrappers. The report presents experimental results from a 1/6-scale spacecraft model subjected to simulated rough-water conditions corresponding to Sea State 4. The study measures longitudinal, lateral, and normal accelerations, as well as angular motion during parachute-assisted splashdown at varying yaw angles. Diagrams illustrate the scaled model with dimensional specifications, while photographic plates document the testing apparatus and procedures. Tables present quantified results, including acceleration ranges and comparative data across test conditions. The text includes detailed analysis of spacecraft orientation at impact, with emphasis on stability and force distribution during landing sequences. Issued during the Gemini program and preceding Apollo missions, this report illustrates how NASA addressed the engineering challenges of ocean recovery following earlier incidents that exposed risks in splashdown operations. The findings demonstrate how specific configurations, particularly orientation at impact, influenced stability and crew survivability, shaping spacecraft design and mission planning. The publication supports research into aerospace engineering systems, experimental modeling, and the development of recovery protocols in early space exploration. Light toning to wrappers and pages with minor edge wear; binding secure and contents clear; overall very good condition. A focused technical document reflecting the engineering processes underlying safe human spaceflight during the Cold War era.
