Barnes was an American chemist, businessman, art collector, writer, educator, and the founder of the Barnes Foundation. Barnes made a fortune as the developer of the antiseptic Argyrol, and subsequently amassed an impressive collection of more than 2,000 pieces of rare art. His extensive holdings include many European and American impressionist masterpieces and early modern art, including works by Cezanne, Matisse, Van Gogh, and Picasso. His collection of 181 Renoir paintings continues to be the largest number of the artist’s paintings gathered in one location.Barnes started the Barnes Foundation in 1922 as an educational institution, with strict limits to its use and very specific rules about its operations. Barnes was known for his ambition and his artistic sensibility, as well as his eccentricity.At the Foundation, he insisted that the art be displayed in a unique way, exhibiting the works by their formal and expressive similarities rather than using the traditional method of grouping items by the date they were created, the place of origin, the type of item, or its medium.Barnes was an early advocate for educational opportunities for African Americans. As the Barnes Foundation writes, ""Committed to racial equality and social justice, Albert C. Barnes believed that education was the cornerstone of a truly democratic society. At his West Philadelphia factory, where many of his employees were African American, Dr. Barnes structured the workday to include seminars on art and philosophy. In 1927, he established a scholarship program to support young Black artists, writers, and musicians who wanted to further their education. "Soviet Military Power," carrying Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger's printed preface, shows Soviet tanks, artillery, helicopters, SS-20 and ICBM and SLBM launchers, bombers, naval construction, Afghanistan, and technology acquisition. The technology-transfer passage offers one of the clearest Cold War intelligence arguments stating that "The communist countries are some of the National Technical Information Services' best customers," and that before the Soviet subscription was terminated in February 1980 the Soviets bought an estimated 80,000 NTIS documents each year. This archive shows the American manufacturing knowledge of its enemy: Soviet organization, armor, and doctrine reduced to simulation tables at Fort Leavenworth, codified into field manuals, and repackaged as public argument under the Secretary of Defense's name. In consequence of an idea that prevailed sometime since that the prothonotaryship of Chester County would soon become vacant – and encouraged thereto by the recommendation of the Chief Justice, Mr. Rush, Mr. Shippen, Mr Burd, and the several Gentlemen of the bar residing in this city. I had prepared an application to council praying for the appointment, that event not taking place my application was never presented. The assembly at their present session it is expected will pass a bill for the division of Chester County, which petition I flatter myself will be recommended by the several Gentlemen who honored me with their former signatures – Having thus assumed the freedom of acquainting you with these circumstances, will you permit me respectfully to solicit your interest in my behalf, and, if you should be pleased to consider me deserving your good opinion, that you will honor me with recommendatory letters to your friends in Council, which I may present in time, as other applications I believe are now onfoot; and if you should not think me too humblesome I would earnestly solicit your influence with the other Gentlemen of the bar in Lancaster who are acquainted with me, for their names to a Recommendation in my favor, which signed by yourself and them will be in addition to that at the foot of my petition, I hope I shall here be able to obtain … Geo. He was active in local politics, Yeates was a moderate Whig and chairman of the Lancaster County committee of correspondence, 1775. He opposed the Pennsylvania constitution of 1776; later he was instrumental in ratification of the Federal Constitution at the Pennsylvania convention. A complete copy of the first edition of this rare volume. SARA GWENDOLEN FOULKES (1863 – 1936) was an American zoologist, marine biologist and poet. She was initially educated at private schools and subsequently attended Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania. She conducted research at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and at the Station Biologique de Roscoff. During the 1880s, Foulke focused her research on infusoria and rotifers, microscopic water inhabiting animals. She later focused on the properties of protoplasm, and in 1897 published The Living Substance as such, and as Organism as a supplement to The Journal of Morphology. Although initially harshly criticized, in writing her obituary, Henry Van Peters Wilson claimed it as a work of "genius". The book delves into the concept of life and the nature of living organisms. Andrews explores the idea that all living things are made up of a "living substance" that is different from non-living matter. She argues that this substance is capable of self-organization and self-regulation, and that it is the basis for all life on Earth. Andrews also discusses the role of this living substance in the development and evolution of organisms. She examines the ways in which living things adapt and change over time, and how they are able to maintain their integrity and identity despite these changes. Throughout the book, Andrews draws on a range of scientific and philosophical sources to support her arguments. She discusses the work of prominent scientists such as Charles Darwin and Ernst Haeckel, as well as the ideas of philosophers such as Immanuel Kant and Arthur Schopenhauer. The book offers a unique perspective on the subject that is still relevant today, more than a century after it was first published. OBITUARY BY H. V. WILSON, Science No 158Feb 26, 1937 (condensed): "On December 13, 1936, there passed away a woman with the rare gift of genius, Mrs. Ethan Allen Andrews, the wife of Professor E. A. And this is the theme of her classic memoir, "The Living Substance as Such: and as Organism," published as a special supplement of the Journal of Morphology in 1897, a memoir which carried her name and aroused admiration in biological circles throughout the world.
