Description
Omaha, Neb.; Lander, Wyoming: Burkley Printing Co.; the Ladies' Guild, 1920. Octavo (22.5 x 15 cm.), 201, [3] pages. Index. Advertisements. FIRST EDITION. A very scarce community cookbook, with recipes, "particularly adapted to the Rocky Mountain region" (preface). Most of the recipes are attributed and are organized by somewhat predictable sections. The Rocky Mountain Game section with bear, elk and venison is an exception. Unusual recipes include Hot Slaw, Dandelion Salad with Green Onions, Elk Pot Roast, Salmi of Wild Duck, and Potato and Liver Pie. The Ladies' Guild of Trinity Church was located in the central Wyoming town of Lander, on the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River. Lander was formerly known as Pushroot, Old Camp Brown, is situated on land of the Shoshone peoples. In 1883, the state's first oil well was discovered there. The advertisements promote both local and national business, and include one color ad for Swan's Down cake flour tipped-in. Some light staining throughout, a bit heavier in what must have been the popular cookie section. This appears to be the seventh cookbook published in Wyoming, the first being Eureka, A Book of Proven Recipes (Cheyenne, 1901). The first gathering is pulling, but still holding, at the title page. In pale gray oil cloth, titled in blue on the front panel, is rubbed and lightly soiled. Still, a solid, good copy. One handwritten recipe at the rear, "Date Pudding". Rare. [OCLC locates three copies (NYU, Huntington, UCBerkeley; not in Brown].
