Description
Kassel: Theodor Fischer, 1883. Complete with contents and list of species, notes, supplements, corrections, and 33 chromolithograph plates finished by hand after Gustav Mützel. Publisher’s cloth, blind-stamped and gilt, rebacked with the original spine laid down, covers worn around edges; text lightly stained with some offsetting from tissue guards and a few paper tears repaired with tape, plates are mostly clean and bright. From the James Dolan collection. Inside the volume are 2 separate plates: 1. A colored specimen plate of Ara Gosse signed by Joseph Smit (1836-1929), the famous Dutch zoological illustrator; and 2. A hand-colored original drawing of a female moustached parakeet with written notes describing the physical attributes, colors and markings, possibly by Reichenow or Mutzel or Smit. First edition of the first and most comprehensive classification of parrots by origin and species from throughout the world, with brilliant illustrations by Mützel. The plates depict various parrots in their natural surroundings organized by family. The work is especially known for the accuracy of the drawing as well as for the monumental presentation of the 258 species of parrots. Reichenow (1847-1941) was the most prominent German ornithologist of his day, being an expert of African birds and parrots. He worked at the Humboldt Museum from 1874 to 1921 and was editor of the Journal für Ornithologie from 1894 to 1921. A number of birds are named after him, including Reichenow's woodpecker. Mützel (1839 –1893) was a German painter and draftsman specializing in animal subjects. Born in Berlin, he studied at the School of Beaux-Arts there. Among his best-known works are the illustrations for Brehm’s Lives of the Animals.

Königsberg: Bei den Gebrüdern Bornträger, 1828. FIRST EDITION. A PRESENTATION COPY. With 3 folding handcoloured engravings. Original wrappers bound into contemporary pasteboards, rebacked. Presentation copy inscribed in French to M. Valenciennes; gift bookplate of the Boston Society of Natural History, by the bequest of its first president, Benjamin D. Greene, M.D., dated 1863. FIRST EDITION of the first part of von Baer's classic of embryology, complete in itself. The author here treats the development of the chicken in the egg. He describes vertebrate embryonic development from conception to birth, effectively ending any belief in the preformation theory of embryonic development. According to Singer, von Baer's four important advances in embryology include "the discovery of the mammalian ovum; the proposition known as the germ-layer-theory; the law of corresponding stages in the development of the embryo; and the discovery of the notochord." Presentation copies of von Baer's works are notoriously rare. The second and third parts to this series were published in 1837 and 1888. "Über entwickelungsgeschiche was never finished – the second volume appeared in incomplete form nine years after the first, in response to the demands ofthesubscribers; and the conclusion, also incomplete, was not issued until 1888, twelve years after Baer's death and fifty years after it was written" (Norman).

Description
[Rome]: Santa Prassede, 19th century. Linen ribbon cut to 69 x 4 cm, printed in black ink on one side with the words “MISURA DELLA COLONNA DI CRISTO NRO SIGNORE ALLA QUALE FU FLAGELLATO”, and, in much smaller letters “SI VENERA PRESSO LI MMCI VALLOMBROSANI DI S. PRASSEDE DI ROMA”. On each end is a small reproduction of the column surrounded by foliage. In excellent condition. Rare and ephemeral “metric relic.” Cut to the exact height of the column that Christ was lashed to during his flagellation, these ribbons would have been available to pilgrims visiting the Basilica of Saint Praxedes in Rome, where the supposed column is housed. The column was translated to the basilica in 1222 from Jerusalem, and it remains there today. Metric relics, items made to match specific dimensions of holy things, offered a contemplative alternative to physical remains. Medieval and early modern Christians placed great emphasis on divine measurements and meditated on them as a means of imagining the people and places from the Biblical narrative. Visualizing the distances, heights, depths, and lengths of sacred elements lent realism and credibility to literary descriptions, and those unable to undertake an actual trip to the Holy Land could instead go on a mental pilgrimage. Tourists making spiritual journeys to Rome enjoyed purchasing small relics like this to take back to their homes as mementos of their journeys. Cheap and easy to produce, metric relics could be made in large quantities without fear of inauthenticity, and they still provided a source of income for the church. Unrecorded in OCLC, OPAC, and KVK; Barbier de Montault, “Les Mesures de devotion” in Revue de l’art chrétien 32(1881) 369-370; Van Asperen “’As if they had phyicalled visited the holy places’” in The Imagined and Real Jerusalem in Art and Architecture 202-203; Hagen, “Heavenly Agent and Divine Disclosure” in Tracing the Jerusalem Code Volume 1 381-382.

Description
Lancaster, PA: American Physical Society, 1948. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. First edition, first printing, of Feynman's path integral formalism, his revolutionary approach to solving the fundamental equations of quantum mechanics and the basis for his later famous formulations of "Feynman rules" and "Feynman diagrams".. "In mid-1947 friends of Feynman persuaded him - threats and cajoling were required - to write for publication the theoretical ideas they kept hearing him explain. When he finally did, he used no diagrams. The result was partly a reworking of his thesis, but it also showed the maturing and broadening of his command of the issues of quantum electrodynamics. He expressed the tenets of his new vision with unabashed plainness. For some physicists this would be the most influential set of ideas Feynman ever published. "He said he had developed an alternative formulation of quantum mechanics to add to the pair of formulations produced two decades before by Schrodinger and Heisenberg. He defined the notion of probability amplitude for a space-time path. In the classical world one could merely add probabilities... in the quantum world probabilities were expressed as complex numbers, numbers with both a quantity and a phase, and these so-called amplitudes were squared to produce a probability. This was the mathematical procedure necessary to capture the wavelike aspects of particle behavior... "Probability amplitudes were normally associated with the likelihood of a particle's arriving at a certain place at a certain time. Feynman said he would associate the probability amplitude 'with an entire motion of a particle'- with a path. He stated the central principle of his quantum mechanics: The probability of an event which can happen in several different ways is the absolute square of a sum of complex contributions, one from each alternative way. These complex numbers, these amplitudes, were written in terms of the classical action; he showed how to calculate the action for each path as a certain integral. And he established that this peculiar approach was mathematically equivalent to the standard Schrodinger wave function, so different in spirit. "The Physical Review had printed nothing by Feynman since his undergraduate thesis almost a decade before. To his dismay, the editors now rejected this paper. Bethe helped him rewrite it, showing him how to spell out for the reader what was old and what was new, and he tried the more retrospective journal Reviews of Modern Physics, where finally it appeared the next spring under the title 'Space-Time Approach to Non-Relativistic Quantum Mechanics'." (Gleick). FEYNMAN, RICHARD. "Space-Time Approach to Non-Relativistic Quantum Mechanics". In: Reviews of Modern Physics, vol. 20, no. 2 (April 1948): 367-87. Lancaster, PA: American Physical Society, 1948. First edition, first printing. Quarto, original printed wrappers. With neat ownership signature on front wrapper ("H.T. Epstein") of distinguished physicist and biophysicist Herman T. Epstein (1920-2007). Very mild, general wear; a near-fine copy, rare in original wrappers and without any institutional stamps. Note: A custom cloth box can be made for this item for an additional $250. References: Gleick, James, Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman (New York: Pantheon Books, 1992), p. 247-49). Description
15/05/1944. The only Canal Zone governorship appointment we can find reaching the market in over 40 yearsJoseph C. Mehaffey was a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was first assigned to the Panama Canal Zone in 1911-1912, then was sent to Alaska as Chief Engineer to build bridges, roads, and trails throughout the territory. During World War I he served in the Office of the Chief of Engineers in Washington. After the war he was named professor of practical military engineering at West Point. Returning to Washington, Mehaffey was appointed assistant to the executive officer of the Arlington Memorial Bridge Commission, and in that capacity helped oversee the design and construction of the bridge. He also supervised the 1927 conversion of the attic of the White House into a 3rd floor with bedrooms, bathrooms, and office space.Mehaffey returned to the Panama Canal Zone in December 1929 as assistant engineer, then was reassigned to the Office of the Chief of Engineers. During the New Deal, he had responsibility over WPA projects nationwide, primarily working on airport, beach, pier, playground, and school projects in New York City. One of his major construction efforts was building the East River Drive. As Assistant Administrator for Engineering for the entire WPA, he was very much on President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s radar. With World War II on the horizon, in September 1941 Mehaffey once again was assigned to the Panama Canal Zone as maintenance engineer, building locks and highways. He became a brigadier general in June 1942 and was appointed Panama Canal Zone Governor by President Roosevelt on May 15, 1944. He was promoted to major general a month later. During this period, Mehaffey oversaw operation of the canal while record amounts of traffic moved through it. At one point in 1945, more than 100 ships waited at the eastern entrance to the canal. He retired in 1948, receiving the Distinguished Service Medal for his service as Canal governor.Document signed, as President, Washington, May 15, 1944, appointing “Brigadier General Joseph C. Mehaffey…Governor of The Panama Canal.” The document is countersigned by Secretary of War Henry Stimson, and its blue seal is still intact.Appointments signed by FDR in the last year of his life are quite uncommon, this being the first we have had in many years. But even more significant is the rarity of appointments as Panama Canal governor made by any president. We have never seen another, and a search of public sale records going back over 40 years shows only this very document as having reached the public market. It last sold in 1976.

Description
San Francisco, 1968. Very good.. Broadsheet on blue paper, 13.5 x 8.5 inches. Slight discoloration along top and bottom edges, minor edge wear, a few soft creases, old horizontal folds. An exceedingly rare broadsheet advertising a multi-faceted public march and rally against the Vietnam War and "racism, poverty and repression," which took place in San Francisco, California about three weeks after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. The organizers of the event, the April 27 Mobilization Committee, framed the day's activities around Dr. King's opposition to the Vietnam War; the broadside calls for the protesters to "pay tribute to the memory" of Dr. King, his portrait is printed at the top of the front side of the broadsheet, and the entirety of the verso prints excerpts of an April 4, 1967 speech by Dr. King railing against the Vietnam War. Particularly interesting is the eclectic list of speakers who participated in the day's events on April 27, 1968, which included Muhammad Ali, Vanessa Redgrave, Jeanette Rankin, Bobby Seale, Arnold True, and Sidney Roger. Ali was in the midst of his appeal after his conviction for draft evasion the previous year, and was a natural candidate to speak against the injustices of the Vietnam War. Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panthers, was four months away from participating in protests at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, after which he was arrested and tried as part of the sham Chicago Eight fiasco. The diversity of the speakers echoes the quantity of different issues represented by the current broadsheet: Civil Rights, the Vietnam War, the recent assassination of Dr. King, Muhammad Ali's legal fight against the war, Bobby Seale's controversial role with the Bay Area Black Panthers, women's rights, and the role of the American military. We could locate no other copies of this broadsheet in auction history or OCLC.

London: Leonard Smithers, 1896. Hardcover. Very Good. Beardsley, Aubrey. Designed by Aubrey Beardsley with his initials to front cover. Hardcover with beveled boards, full blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt design to front cover, 9-3/8" tall, 48 pp., nine illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. Wear to spine ends with 1/8" tear to bottom of front joint, moderate wear to tips, moderate rubbing to gilt on front cover, foxing to text pages, especially to first several pages. Aubrey Beardsley's cover shows a clear distinction between his skills in illustration and design. The illustrations in this work are intricate, highly detailed, and free flowing. In contrast, the cover is symmetrical and formal, and quite within the poster art style which was in its heyday in the 1890s. In both styles, Beardsley succeeds; although the florid erotic drawings might be better known, this cover is a brilliant example of the poster art design.

Description
Philadelphia, 1865. Large engraved certificate issued by the Philadelphia Lying-in Charity, dated May 17, 1865, certifying that physician George W. Wood completed instruction in practical obstetrics and the treatment of diseases of females. The document bears several original signatures of prominent Philadelphia physicians including Caspar Wistar and other officers of the institution. Printed on large laid paper with ornate engraved typography and embossed seal. An attractive and historically interesting example of nineteenth-century medical education. Shelved at Rockville Room J (MW Shelf). The Philadelphia Lying-in Charity provided clinical training for physicians attending childbirth cases among indigent women in Philadelphia and represents an important early institution in American obstetrical education. Caspar Wistar (1761-1818) was a prominent American physician, anatomist, and educator who played a major role in the development of medical education in the early United States. Born in Philadelphia into a well-known Quaker family, he studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and later continued his training in Edinburgh before returning to Philadelphia to practice and teach. Wistar became professor of anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania in 1808 and was widely respected for his clear lectures and influential textbook A System of Anatomy (1811), one of the first major American works on the subject. He was also an active scientific leader, serving as president of the American Philosophical Society and hosting the famous "Wistar Parties," informal scientific gatherings that brought together leading scholars of the early republic. His name is preserved in the well-known Wistar Institute in Philadelphia and in the Wistar rat strain used in biomedical research. 1409909. Special Collections - Upstairs.

Remarkable publication documenting the work of the renowned Ukrainian sculptor. Associated with the cubist movement, Archipenko departed from the neo-classical sculpture of his time and used negative space to create a new way of looking at the human figure, showing a number of views of the subject simultaneously. Known for introducing sculptural voids, and for his inventive mixing of genres throughout his career: devising 'sculpto-paintings', and later experimenting with materials such as clear acrylic and terra cotta. This album contains 1 in-text and 32 full-page b/w photographic reproductions of the artist's sculptures, terra cotta, and paintings. Text in German. Minor wear and sunning to edges. Shorefront was a publishing and archival endeavor built from the ground up by, and for, the African American community of Evanston, with the aim of preserving and celebrating their unique local history. A seemingly almost unknown publication, with only 7 copies recorded in US institutions, and a brave attempt to preserve community history.

Description
London: Ray Society, 1851. First edition. THE MICROSCOPY OF SPORES IN CLASSIFICATION OF LICHENS WITH 30 SPECTACULAR COLOR PLATES--BY CLERGYMAN/BOTANIST SCHOOLMATE OF DARWIN WHO SUBSCRIBED TO THE BOOK. 9 inches tall hardcover, green cloth binding, blindstamped design to covers, gilt initials of Ray Society to cover, gilt title to spine, [vi], 101 pp, 30 handcolored lithographic plates, 18 pp List of Subscribers (including "Darwin, C. esq. F.R.S., Down, Kent"), 3 pp Report of the Council of the Ray Society, Professor Henslow in the Chair. Spine faded, binding tight, armorial bookplate of Frederick DuCane Godman to front paste-down, scattered light foxing to text pages, plates bright and unmarked, very good in custom archival mylar cover. FROM THE INTRODUCTION: "Every botanist is fully aware how valuable and avail. able a character is afforded by the form and external markings of the seeds m very many species of Phsenogamous plants; the correct determination of the species frequently depending exclusively thereupon. Analogous reasoning leads us to the conclusion, that the form and septa of the sporidia in Cryptogamic plants would present similarly useful characters. Investigation proves the correctness of this conclusion. Owing, however, to the minuteness of the parts, the delicacy and care required in the manipulation, and the employment of high magnifyin# powers, these organs, in the family of the Lichens at least, do not seem to have hitherto received that attention which their importance really demands. ... The dissections were made under a large and powerful microscope of the best construction by Messrs. Powell and Lealand, opticians, of London." WILLIAM ALLPORT LEIGHTON (1805 – 1889) was an English Church of England clergyman and botanist. He went to school at the Unitarian Manse on Claremont Hill, Shrewsbury, with Charles Darwin, who first encouraged him to be interested in plants. On the death of his father he abandoned the study of the law in favor of the church. He matriculated at St John's College, Cambridge, and graduated B.A. in 1833. Having been a pupil of John Stevens Henslow, Leighton on his return to his native town deferred ordination in order to draw up a flora of Shropshire. In 1843 he was ordained deacon and priest, and took on clerical duties in Shrewsbury until 1848, when he resigned his curacy at St Giles' Church, and thenceforward occupied himself entirely with botany. In 1841, he brought out his Flora of Shropshire, the etchings to illustrate some of the genera being his own. He then began working on the cryptogams, and in 1851 the Ray Society published his Angiocarpous Lichens elucidated by their Sporidia (offered here). From that date onward Leighton published widely in the literature on lichens, producing as his major work Lichen Flora of Great Britain in 1871. Leighton suffered from deteriorating eyesight, and soon after 1879 gave up his studies; he donated his collection to the national herbarium at Kew Gardens. PROVENANCE: FREDERICK DUCANE GODMAN (1834 –1919) was an English lepidopterist, entomologist and ornithologist. He was one of the twenty founding members of the British Ornithologists' Union. Godman joined Trinity College, Cambridge in 1853, where he met Alfred Newton and Osbert Salvin. In 1876 Godman and Salvin decided to work on a project to document the fauna and flora of Central America. This monumental work Biologia Centrali-Americana (1879–1915) was to grow into a 63 volume encyclopaedia on the natural history of Central America. Godman and Salvin also collected numerous bird and butterfly specimens. These were presented to the British Museum in 1885, including nearly 520,000 bird skins alone. Godman was a fellow of the Zoological Society of London, and member of its council from 1902. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1882, received a gold medal from the Linnean Society in 1918, and was made a trustee of the British Museum. THE RAY SOCIETY was founded in 1844, largely on the initiative of George Johnston and named after the naturalist John Ray (1627–1705). It is based at the Natural History Museum, London, and is a registered charity under English law. The Ray Society's publications are concerned with natural history, and have special but not exclusive reference to British flora and fauna. They include original monographs on particular groups and topics, facsimiles of historically important volumes and translations of existing works. During Charles Darwin's lifetime, the Ray Society published not only Darwin's two volumes on living barnacles (1851 and 1854) but also the work of many of the foremost British naturalists: Thomas Henry Huxley, William Crawford Williamson, John Blackwall, Albert Günther, and James Scott Bowerbank.
