Description
[8], lvi, 1112, [4] pp. Thick folio, 475 x 310 mm, bound in contemporary French brown-stained pigskin, raised bands, tan morocco spine label stamped in gilt. Paris: l'Imprimerie Imperiale, 1813. First Edition. A massive, imposing Chinese dictionary commissioned by Napoleon in 1809, and an important work in the development of Western scholarship on China. Although given no credit in the book, the dictionary is actually a re-edit of work compiled by the Franciscan friar, Basilio de Glemona Brollo (1648-1704) during his thirty years of missionary work in China in the seventeenth-century. His work was considered among the finest of the Missionary lexicons. Chretien-Louis-Joseph de Guignes (1759-1845), listed on the title-page as the sole author, was in fact only responsible for the editing and the French translations of the ideograms. Despite this overstated role in the creation of the dictionary, de Guignes was a prominent sinologist who lived, traveled and worked in China for 17 years, and was the son of another great sinologist, Josef de Guignes. His was the author of an extensive travel guide of China entitled Voyages à Peking, Manille et l'île de France, faits dans l'intervalle des années 1784 à 1801. De Guignes served as interpreter for Issac Titsingh, the Dutch ambassador to the court of the Emperor Qianlong in 1794-95. The members of the Titsingh mission were the only welcomed westerners in China at the end of the Qianlong dynasty. One speculation being that they were willing (unlike the British) to perform the "kowtow" at Court in front of the Emperor, according to Chinese custom. Thus, de Guignes was among the last European diplomats to be allowed inside Yuanmingyuan (The Peking Summer Palace) and to observe the incomparable splendour of Qianlong's pleasure gardens and palaces before their destruction by the Lord Elgin's troops during the Second Opium War in 1860. The dictionary is an impressive piece of typography containing over 13,000 woodcut Chinese characters. Interestingly they were cut nearly one hundred years earlier for a separate project involving the Chinese works in the Royal Library. The characters are arranged by the order of their complexity, each with the phonetic pronunciation and the Latin and French translation, including several indexes at the end on tones and numeric characters. Some light marginal waterstains to a few leaves, professionally rebacked with the original spine laid down, still a fine copy. Cordier 1589. Lust 1037. Lowendahl 763. Brunet II, 568.

Showa 11 [1936]; #32 of 150cc. Large gold cloth brocade portfolio 43 x 54 cm. Twelve prints of China [ea. 32 x 43 cm image size], wonderfully well printed using a hybrid of collotype with woodcut printed color overlays. Clasped portfolio with printed silk title label. The prints are tipped onto backing mattes. Overall the prints themselves are in fine condition. Baldinger in his article about Seihō (1864-1942) mentions this series as complete in 12 (of a total of 36 projected) images. Displayed in 1922 at the Japan-France exchange, one of his original paintings, Soshū no Ame 蘇州の雨 [Rain at Suzhou] won Seihō membership in the French Legion of Honor in 1924 as “Chevalier.” (Seihō later received the rank of “Officier” in 1931.) Two of the prints here are of Suzhou (also Soochow, 蘇州 or 苏州). The publisher Otsuka Kogeisha 大塚巧藝社, founded by Otsuka Minoru, was known for its remarkable technical virtuosity in capturing in prints the delicacy of watercolor paintings. Done about the same time that Unsōdō 芸艸堂, using similar techniques, was publishing Seihō's Ippinshu portfolio. All in a cracked and repaired custom wooden box.

Description
Full Decorated Morocco. Very Good. A wonderful monogram album in which crest and monograms are incorporated into idiosyncratic and whimsical artwork done in watercolors and/or pen-and-ink. 4to. 28.5 by 25.5 cm. 33 pages of such artwork. Among the more spectacular and/or imaginative illustrations are of two Scotsman dancing a jig (the Scotsman, both in kilts, are painted, cut out and mounted, as opposed to done directly onto the album paper); a pen-and-ink cat wearing spectacles, sitting at a spinning wheel, surrounded by a monogram-composed tea kettle; a page of butterfles, watercolored, but decorated also with cut-out monograms; a queen of hearts card whose attire is bedecked with monograms; a beehive, with bees flying outside; the tomb of a knight; an ark, presumably Noah's; an art gallery with a Victorian couple oblivious to the art and an earnest man scrutinizing a painting closely. Some of the imagery is more pedestrian for such augmented monogram albums -- a chair, an anchor, a pile of letters, a flag, various geometric patterns, etc. Facing a few illustrated pages are keys indicating whose monograms or crests are exhibited. Condition: 1 to 2 cm loss of leather, upper spine tip, and a few cm's of loss of leather along upper joint. Fading of gilt on spine.

London Printed: Boston: Re-Printed by T. and J. Fleet, 1768. 34, [1-publ. advt.], [1 blank] pp [pp. 5-8 loose]. Disbound, untrimmed. Lightly tanned, light edgewear. Light scattered foxing. Very Good. "In the year 1743 a dreadful fire at Crediton deprived no fewer than four hundred and fifty families of their homes. This awful event awakened all the benevolent sympathies of Mr. Towgood, who exerted himself to the utmost to lessen the affliction. His house and his purse were alike open for the relief of the sufferers... About this time he published a valuable tract on the sentiments suitable to a season of recovery from sickness. It was designed as a present to such of his congregation as had lately been raised from dangerous disorders, and contained serious reflections, resolutions, and devout meditations, suitable to persons in these circumstances. It passed through three editions in this country, besides a large impression in America, under the direction of the author's friend and correspondent, Dr. Mayhew, of Boston, in New England." [Turner, Rev. W.: LIVES OF EMINENT UNITARIANS; WITH A NOTICE OF DISSENTING ACADEMIES 395-396. London: Unitarian Association. 1840.] This is the first American printing; it was reissued from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1794. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Evans 11095. NAIP w005685 [10].

Description
México, D.F.: Editorial Llamarada, 1982. illustrated mimeo with silkcreen covers. Artist book in honor of Felipe Ehrenberg made and signed 8 of his student artists, Editon of 75 . The late 1970s and early 1980s saw a return to political art drawing outside the established art scene in Mexico. New media and techniques developed using stencils, mimeograph, blueprints, photocopies and rubber stamps as a means of reproduction. Felipe Ehrenberg was a prime influence in producing and organizing students and artists in producing these unorthodox publications. His efforts opened the field for more collective initiatives, for groups like SUMA, Proceso Pentágono, Entre Tierras, La Cocina Ediciones; No Grupo among others. These groups emerged from different ideologies; some from conceptual art, while others had more to do with social or political concerns. From these groups came independent presses such as La Flor del Otro Día, Tinta Morada, and Tres Sirenas . An early independent, alternative press in Mexico 1981-1983 by and under the direction of Felipe Ehrenberg. RARE.
