Discrete former ownership stamp on title. Gutter margin of title reinforced; inconsequential toning, otherwise excellent. Rare early edition of this Jesuit letter containing news of missions and activity in Japan from the year 1582, the only edition (of 5 printed that year) to contain a title-page advertising the famous Japanese embassy of 1584-86. Significantly, the work also discusses the embassy, the participants and their noble lineage, and expresses the hope that the embassy will prove a convincing sign of the Jesuit's spectacular success in Japan (p. 7). The present imprint of this edition comprises the first entry in Boscaro's bibliography of printed works related to the embassy. It thus stands at the head of nearly 50 works printed in 1585 (alone) to record and commemmorate an event that-in addition to providing a public relations coup for the Jesuits-became a watershed moment in cross-cultural exchange between the Orient and the West: "no Japanese emissaries to Europe, either before or since, aroused comparable interest or enthusiasm" (Lach). In the annals of international relations between Europe and Japan in the 16th C, it is particularly noteworthy "how the physical presence of the Japanese [in Europe] stimulated an unexpected number of typographical presentations" (Boscaro), of which this particular Gioliti edition with the titlepage advertising the embassy-Portata de Novo Dal Giapone Dai Signori Ambasciatori-is the very first. Boscaro notes that there were four other editions of Coehho's letter published in Italy in 1585 around the time the embassy arrived in Venice on June 25 (including another by Gioliti), but none of these uses the embassy as a way to market itself. The report itself is also a significant document of the embassy's genesis: Coelho composed it in February 1582, the month that the embassy of four Japanese Christian converts departed from Nagasaki. In it, he describes the ongoing missionary activity across the country: e.g. in Hirado, Amasuka, Bungo, and especially Funai (Oita City), the home of a thriving Jesuit college. Presumably, the contents of this letter as the title suggests were "brought from Japan by the eminent ambassadors" as the latest news on the Jesuits current success in that faraway land. Though the embassy did not reach Lisbon until August 1584, it eventually was, as Coelho had hoped, a resounding success: from 1584-86 the four young Japanese nobles were the object of intense curiosity wherever they traveled, and they were treated to lavish receptions in Lisbon, Madrid, Florence, Rome, Venice, and other cities throughout Catholic Europe. A beautiful example in superb original color of the classic Dutch engraving of Capt. John Smith's map of the Chesapeake Bay and region, the first European map of the area. Smith's map was a remarkably accurate work for its period and is a valuable record of Indian tribes that existed at the time. In fact, the map is unusual in acknowledging the role of Indian informants in its creation; Maltese Crosses indicate the areas beyond which were based on Indian reports. Also found on the engraving is a portrait of Powhatan in the upper left. The plate from which this map was printed was engraved in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius Junior, son of the great map and globe publisher. It is now believed (see Burden) that the plate was sold to the Blaeu firm in 1630, at which time the imprint was changed to that of Blaeu. (Ghosts of the incompletely erased J and H of the Hondius imprint are visible beneath that of Blaeu.) The 1618 state of the map, which is extremely rare, was the earliest derivative of Smith's map, which was originally published in England in 1612. The firm of Henricus Hondius, the other son of the master, copied the map from the Hondius-Blaeu version adding its own imprint. Thus, the sequence of Dutch editions of the map, in the folio format, is from J. Hondius Jr. to Blaeu to H. Hondius. Burden 193; Verner in Tooley America, pp. 161-62.

Joseph Conrad's first short story was published in the sixth issue, and other contributors included W.B. Yeats, Havelock Ellis, Edmund Gosse, George Bernard Shaw, and Max Beerbohm. The brightest start in the firmament was Aubrey Beardsley, though even his stunning illustrations didn't generate enough sales to keep the magazine going. Arthur Symons announced its cessation in the seventh issue: "We will therefore retire from the arena, not entirely dissatisfied, if not a trifle disappointed, leaving to those who care for it our year's work, which will be presented to you in three volumes, in a cover of Mr. Beardsley's designing. When we come before you again, it will be in a more luxurious form, for which you shall pay more, but less often.".

He was a native of Alcalá and had studied classics, philosophy, and laws there and in Salamanca. He served as secretary to the Conde de Oropesa and, after 1654, as Oficial of the first Secretariat of State. His writings prior to his appointment as chronicler were of a literary nature, principally dramatic and poetic. His work as chronicler showed the influence of his literary background. He at first intended to write a continuation of Herrera's Historia. In preparing himself for this he found a prejudice in the works of foreigners and his own nation that he decided to rewrite the story of the conquest of Mexico, which he found most in need of revision. His work, therefore, was affected by two elements which damaged its historical value: his desire to write a well-balanced literary work and his determination to defend the Spanish national honor. The result of his labors was his Historia de la conquista de México, población y progreso de la Amérique Septentrional conocida con el nombre Nueva España, which appeared in 1684. The actual content of the work does not come up to the indications of the title. Solís was able to complete only the first part, which told the history of the conquest of Mexico, 1519-1521. He was working on the continuation of the work when he died in Madrid in 1686. Solis' Historia has been called a poem without verse, as it is written in epic style, with a great central hero and with the facts selected according to the needs of the story. It became the first standard literary version of the Conquest until Prescott's history and other later works. It went through numerous Spanish editions and was translated in the major European tongues.... A lengthy study of Solís and his history, by Luis A. Arocena, saw publication in Buenos Aires in 1963. I hope you will enable him to see the things he ought to see and meet the men he should meet – Thomas, Zimmern, Tom Jones, etc. – for he has it in him to make understanding wiser and more durable…" Some twenty years before he was appointed a Justice of the United States Supreme Court by President Franklin Roosevelt, 36 year-old Felix Frankfurter left a teaching position at Harvard Law School during World War I to take on several low-profile but important Washington positions – as Judge Advocate General, supervising military courts-martial for the War Department, and as Labor Department counsel to a presidential commission to resolve major strikes that threatened war production. In both these roles, Frankfurter was embraced by high British officials dedicated to building an Anglo-American "special relationship". As a political progressive, he also maintained old friendships with Bostonian Jewish social reformers like Meyer Bloomfield, leading advocate of a once-novel idea – providing vocational guidance and training to public school students, particularly those with socio-economic disadvantages. When Bloomfield, a friend of Frankfurter's for a decade, was commissioned by the Saturday Evening Post to visit England to write a series of articles on British industrial-labor relations at the close of the War, he naturally asked Frankfurter to open doors for him at Whitehall. Frankfurter happily complied in this hurried exchange of messages between the two men. The result – as Bloomfield noted in a book he published the following year ("The New Labour Movement in Great Britain; Management and Men") – was a warm reception he received in London from Frankfurter friends Lord Eustace Percy, then at the British Foreign Office; historian Alfred Zimmern of the Political Intelligence Department (who later coined the term "welfare state"); and British Trade Union official Thomas Jones.
