Description
London: Chatto & Windus, 1891. First edition. Fine. Original publisher's primary blue cloth gilt (there are examples of remainder bindings extant), octavo. Edges untrimmed, 32 pp. publisher's ads at rear (mostly uncut), pictorial bookplate of Herbert & Sarita Ward to front pastedown. Fore-edge foxed, otherwise a Fine copy with outstanding provenance. An extraordinary association copy of a noted rarity, a sharp critique of the "Scramble for Africa". The copy of Herbert Ward, sculptor, writer, and member of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was directly under the command of Major Edmund Barttlelot at the rear column, having been appointed by Stanley as a lieutenant. The infamous column features heavily in Fox Bourne's work, with the entirety of chapter five dedicated to the topic. Ward and his work My Life with Stanley's Rear Guard are quoted extensively, and Fox Bourne clearly makes an example of Ward's illegal and immoral behaviour. A particularly disturbing example is the case of the execution of Burgari, who was initially charged with stealing food from Ward before attempting to flee. Two officers, Troup and Jameson, wanted the punishment to be downgraded, but Ward along with Bonny and Barttlelot voted for the death penalty. Fox Bourne became secretary of the Aborigines Protection Society in 1889. He edited its journal Aborigines' Friend and lobbied for the rights of indigenous peoples, and especially advocated for those in Africa. He stated that indigenous people had fundamental rights, to their land, their rites and their institutions. He later published Civilisation in Congo Land, A Story of International Wrong-Doing in 1903, focusing on the horrendous treatment of the indigenous population by the Belgian government. Fine.

Description
Berkeley: The Figures, 1980. First Edition. Limited issue, no.7 of 7 copies, signed on colophon with an original pencil drawing in glassine envelope laid in; from a total edition of 500 copies. 12mo; pictorial card wrappers; 51,(1)pp; illus. A fairly early publication by Drucker, and given the limitation surely one of the most difficult of her limited editions for the collector to obtain. Italy was written in 1979, after Drucker's return home following six months of travel abroad; she describes it as: "Not precisely a travel narrative, it had been one of several "real accounts" that established a strain of writing practice that continues to the present ... Italy was ... written in speed, telegraphic style, to recount observations between objective observation and subjective experience, riding the line through images and details, experientially based but not necessarily personal" (see "Johanna Drucker's Artist's Books," on-line resource at johannadrucker dot net). Aside from the colophon printed inside the rear cover, the limited edition does not differ from the commercially-printed trade edition; both text and drawings are offset-printed, resulting in a rather commonplace little paperback which, as Drucker herself notes, "...barely qualifies as an artist's book." Nonetheless a true rarity, and a significant work in Drucker's early oeuvre.

Description
London: Horace Cox, 1894. FIRST EDITION. With frontispiece, errata, and 26 plates. Original publisher’s illustrated green cloth with silver and gold embossing, floral endpaper. An excellent copy with Norfolk & Norwich Library plates on cover and front paste-down. First edition. Sporting days in southern India details the thrilling adventures of Lieutenant-Colonel Pollock on multiple big game hunts. He describes the strategy in stalking bears, panthers, tigers, bison, elephants, deer, ibex, and other animals. The book is dedicated to his son, Annesley, whom he wishes will become proficient in the sport as well. Pollock’s narrative is upbeat and exciting as he manages to capture the thrill of the hunt. He also provides details and helpful information about preparation for camping and travel in the jungle, especially during the monsoon season in India. A member of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, Pollock was born in October 1846, began his military career as an ensign in February 1866, completed his officer’s training in 1879, became a lieutenant colonel in 1894 and retired from active service in August 1898.

Description
London: D. Bond, printer, 1774. Ephemera no binding. Fine. Samuel and Nathaniel BUCK. Archival matting with a hand-applied gilt border. Matted print measures 14" x 21"; print sheet measures 11 3/8" x 18"; engraved image within the plate line measures 7 ½" x 14 ½". Hand-colored copperplate engraving from the publication, Buck's Antiquities, or Venerable Remains of Above 400 Castles, &c. in England and Wales, with near 100 Views of Cities. The text reads, "This Castle was built for the defence of the harbour, and is very ancient for there has been a Chappel in it ever since D. Edward 3.time-which was dedicated to St. Petrock, & belongs to Stoke-fleming Church 2 miles off, but the stone Tower and Spire were Built by the Inhabitants not many Years since." A pronounced engraving plate mark can be easily seen within the matted area. Dartmouth Castle was built in 1388 by the corporation of Dartmouth to guard the mouth of the Dart Estuary in Devon, it was fortified by King Henry VIII and remained in use through both WWI and WWII. The engraving shows not only the castle, but Dartmoor rising above the river and a view of the town as the river rounds the bend. A church, most likely St. Saviour's (built in 1335) can be seen in the town. Ships can be seen in the harbor with men rowing from them. The high level of detail and delicate coloring bring this engraving to life.

Description
1963. [Civil Rights] [Social Activist]. American Emigrants' League Newsletter. Vol. 1, No. 3, Summer 1963. Features the front-page article, "Migration, An Expression of Non-Conformity" by J.W. Massecar. This article makes the case for Americans to leave their country in order to advance the cause of world peace. The author contends that repressive forces such as the "men of Madison Avenue" have used mass media to enforce conformity in Americans, which is present from the innocuous "dress fads of teenagers" to the parameters of acceptable political views. For the author, being a "non-conformist" is an identity paramount to all others. This piece makes an attempt to delineate correct and incorrect patterns of non-conformity, i.e. the Beatnik or the "deliberate non-conformist" are trapped by their impulse to be different in a way that replicates conformity. However, if one is considering emigration, they are "in no doubt...a nonconformist." Where exactly one should emigrate to, or how they should advance the cause of world peace, is unspecified, but the sentiment expressed in this article would be propagated and take hold among young men drafted into Vietnam, many of whom fled to other nations rather than "conform" and take part in a war they did not support. First page is loose but overall in very good condition.
