Description
51 leaves (including one blank). 8vo (245 x 172 mm.), orig. self-wrappers, orig. stitching. [Japan]: 1856. A fascinating record book, containing notes from 1838 to 1867 (in spite of the cover date of 1856), concerning the business of making sake and the brewers’ relations with the government. Sake brewing in Japan has long been a highly regulated industry and an important source of tax revenue. The bakufu instituted the licensing system called “Sakekabu” in 1657 in order to regulate the number of manufacturers and the amount of rice used. The “Sakekabu” itself is a wooden license tag, carrying on the front the name and address of the brewer, along with the amount of sake he could make. On the back of the tag was the official seal of the local finance ministry. “Sakekabu” licenses could be transferred or leased to other brewers within the same province. Produced in Shimosa province (today’s Chiba Prefecture), this record book chronicles the regional brewers associations’ relations with the provincial tax authorities from 1838 to 1867. We find accounts here of brewers leasing their licenses, names of governmental officials who had oversight of the industry, many names of sake makers, guaranteed quotas of koku and koji, details of the brewing equipment that could be leased (including a wonderful list of the names of the various sizes of barrels), etc. Fine copy, with some minor worming.

Description
1947. First Edition. RILKE, RAINER MARIA. Five Prose Pieces. Cummington, Massachusetts: Cummington Press, 1947. Tall octavo (8-3/4 by 9-1/2 inches), original half brown calf and marbled boards, uncut. $1400.Limited first edition of five select prose works in English from Rilke's early years, featuring the inclusion of Erlebnis (Experience) together in print for the first time with Die Turnstunde (Gym Period), Begegnung (Encounter), Puppen (Dolls) and UrGerausch (Primal Sound), number 178 of only 203 copies on Van Gelder Oxhead paper (271 total), with original woodcut-engraved illustrations by artist Wightman Williams.""Rilke was one of the most gifted and conscientious artists who ever lived"" (Atlantic). This first edition of Five Prose Pieces brings together, for the first time in English, five early essays and stories. Its opening work, Die Turnstunde, (Gym Period) was first issued in German in 1902. Drawing on his experiences as a student at military schools, Rilke came to view the story ""as one of his best prose pieces from his early years. The story's narrative brilliance lies mainly in its terseness, its ability to suggest rather than describe in detail"" (Metzger, Companion, 71). This is followed by Begegnung (An Encounter), in which Rilke portrays a chance meeting between a man and a dog on a road ""where one meets nobody."" This highly evocative work, first issued in German in 1907, captures the dilemma of a man ""desperately seeking a way out of the prison house of language"" even as the dog's silent yet ""happy expectation"" seems to express a desire to share that prison (Kari Driscoll). The third work, Puppen (Dolls), was first issued in German in 1914 after Rilke saw the dolls created by German artist Lotte Pritzell. It provocatively offers a ""key to understanding his own attitudes towards the theme of division within the self"" (Anthony Stephens). The book's fourth work, Erlebnis (An Experience), was written in 1913 but not first issued in German until after Rilke's death in 1926. Here, in its first appearance with these other select works, Rilke's ""purely interior"" narrative signals an ""ecstatically unified world… an idea that is to recur in several of Rilke's works"" (Metzger, 84). The final work, Rilke's autobiographical UrGerausch (Primal Sound), was first published in German in 1919. In it Rilke recalls the ""homemade phonographs"" of a former classroom: its ""'markings traced on the cylinder'—the proto-writing of the past"" (Jacobus, Time-Lines). First edition, first printing: featuring the inclusion of Erlebnis (An Experience) not present in the 1943 volume titled Primal Sound & Other Prose Pieces, which consisted of the other four works and illustrations by Paul Wieghardt (instead of Wightman Williams). Translation by Carl Niemeyer. Schroeder, Rainer Maria Rilke in America: A Bibliography, 31. Trace of bookplate removal.A very elusive copy in fine condition.

Description
1883. CARLYLE, Jane Welsh (CARLYLE, Thomas, editor). Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle, Prepared for Publication by Thomas Carlyle. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1883. Three volumes. Octavo, contemporary full tan polished calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, burgundy and blue morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. $1200.First edition of the first selection of Jane Carlyle's letters—""an electric-shower of all-illuminating brilliancy, penetration, wise discernment, just enthusiasm, humor, grace, patience, courage, love,"" according to her husband Thomas Carlyle, who arranged for the letters' publication—three volumes handsomely bound by Riviere & Son.""It is hardly disputed that she is the greatest woman letter writer in English. Her skill often lay in the immediacy of her letters; their appeal lies partly in the story that emerges from her self-dramatization. Short excerpts can barely do them justice. Their effectiveness has nothing to do with elegant prose, to which she could always rise, much to do with her sympathetic imagination, clear head, alertness, and a quick eye and ear for entirely natural expression… Yet her letters should not be treated simply as autobiography. She was an artist, with a keen and critical eye for the weaknesses and strengths of others. She had a strong and alert intellect, and her insights, whether skeptical or irreverent, are always direct. Her companionship with Carlyle was an education itself, as his with her… His unheard-of decision to publish her letters so completely was justified; he was convinced that they give 'such an electric-shower of all-illuminating brilliancy, penetration, wise discernment, just enthusiasm, humor, grace, patience, courage, love—and in fine of spontaneous nobleness of mind and intellect' surpassing 'whatever of best I know to exist in that kind' (Carlyle, Reminiscences, 161). Her other writings show no such power. She was unwilling to make the effort to express herself in other forms, and probably unable. Nevertheless she was a great writer"" (ODNB). Tarr, Carlyle G1.1.I-III.a. Interiors clean and fine, joints lightly rubbed, bindings sound, near-fine and quite handsome.

Description
New York: Phaidon Press, 2014. First edition. A few minor scratches and marks; generally a clean copy. 12 x 9.5 inches. 288 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original pictorial boards with exposed spine. "Confronted with what to do in his studio soon after graduating, Nauman had the simple but profound realization that 'If I was an artist and I was in the studio, then whatever I was doing in the studio must be art. At this point art became more of an activity and less of a product.' Exploring Nauman's relationship to the place where he creates his strikingly original works, Bruce Nauman: The True Artist retraces back to the artist's youth in Fort Wayne, Indiana, his graduate work at the University of California, Davis, through to the present day. Naumam's continual search for new means and sources of expression have led him to experiment with a very wide variety of medium (photography, performance, sculpture, installations, video, neon sign, and sound) as well as to explore the relationship between words and images. Nauman's apotheosis as one of the world's most highly lauded artists came as he was ranked No. 1 in the world by Artfacts.net in 2006, and he was the sole US representative in the American Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Peter Plagens, best known to the general public for his work as art critic at Newsweek, has known Nauman for over forty years, and in his own words describes this book as 'about my trying to get at the real truth of Bruce Nauman's work'. They first met in 1970, when their studios were a block apart in Pasadena, California, and they played basketball together every Sunday. Since then Plagens has pursued a real understanding of his friend's art and in this book presents it from his uniquely insightful perspective, including chronicling as it happened the creation of works in Nauman's studio in Galisteo, New Mexico, and the organization, installation and reception of his exhibitions. Throughout, Plagens is a savvy and engaging guide to the work, using his own attempts to puzzle out the meaning of the pieces, and the artist's conversations about them, to offer the reader a vivid, personal and enlightening take on one of the key figures in contemporary art" (the publisher).
