Description
London, 1809. Original medical license issued in London in 1809 under the authority of the prestigious Royal College of Physicians. The document is written in elegant Latin manuscript on period laid paper and features an elaborate engraved heading with flourishing calligraphy. Original red wax seal intact. Document measures 9.8 in. x 15.25 in. In Good condition with mild age toning, creasing, and minor staining. Shelved at Rockville Room E (MW Box). Documents of this type represent the formal licensing of physicians in early modern Britain, when the Royal College of Physicians controlled entry into the profession in London. Such licenses were required to legally practice medicine within the city and a defined radius, making this both a historical and professional milestone document. The license was issued during the presidency of Sir Lucas Pepys (1742-1825), a prominent physician who served King George III and was one of the leading medical figures of his era. 1410428. Special Collections - Upstairs.
