Description
[Charleston?, 1861. Broadside, 8-1/4" x 10-1/2". Verse printed in two columns, separated by a double rule. Four stanzas. Blank corners with light spotting suggest prior matting on verso. Very Good. BAL's photograph depicts this broadside poem in poor condition, with much chipping, and thus does not do it justice. Timrod's poetic efforts lauding the southern Confederacy earned him the title, 'Poet Laureate of the South.' Here he waxes rhapsodic on the birth of the new nation. "...At last, we are / A nation among nations; and the world / Shall soon behold in many a distant part / Another flag unfurled!" The poem was reprinted throughout the War in southern newspapers, magazines, and anthologies. This, its first separate printing, is the paradigmatic example of Confederate romantic nationalism. The poem celebrates the convening of the Confederate Congress in Montgomery, Alabama, in early February 1861. "In early 1861, Henry Timrod was a promising young poet and critic from South Carolina. He had just published his first collection of poems after gaining acclaim as a regular contributor to 'Russell's Magazine', the Charleston-based literary journal edited by Paul Hamilton Hayne. With the secession of the southern states, Timrod's romantic and formal poems would take on a decidedly Confederate nationalistic cast" [Hutchison, 'Apples and Ashes: Literature, Nationalism, and the Confederate States of America' page 4 et seq]. FIRST EDITION. BAL 20321. Parrish & Willingham 6577. Hummel 2468. Rudolph 189.

"Corruption or mismanagement by employees or partners of non-British houses frequently made news during the century. One of the more celebrated cases was the failure of Sebastian Lezica Brothers in September 1835. The manager of the house, a German named Frederick Hornung, apparently forged bills of exchange without the knowledge of his employers, three Argentine brothers. After the failure of a British house, Thwaites and Company, and after the retention of money in the Chilean branch, the Lezica Brothers had to raise money. Originally Hartung procured the signatures of a number of people, including Thwaites; but when persons declined, he began to forge names on bills of exchange--both the drawer's and drawee's names--in order to prevent bankruptcy. From an important series of design portfolios originally produced by Seibundo in 1930. The original title of this work was YO^HIN BO^SHITEN KO^KOKU ZUANSHU^ and the attributed designer was Murota Kurazo^. That original series was distinguished as the Advertising Design [Ko^koku Zunshu^] series. By 1932, the series had been retitled the Hanjo^saku [Planning for Profit] series and all reference to the original designers was dropped, new text was added, etc. In addition, it was bound in boards. This one is dedicated to shops specializing in Western styel clothing, especially hats. This volume consists of 50 pages of plates in both color and monochrome. About good overall.

Description
Bologna [but Lugano?]: n.p., 1831. Original edition. Good. Octavo (16cm); viii, 238 pages. Bound in contemporary quarter calf over paper-covered boards decorated in a sort of blood cell pattern. Black leather title label. Scuffed and worn, joints tender. Title page and several succeeding leaves lightly foxed, with some stains along fore-edge. Scarce in North American libraries. Anthology of revolutionary poetry published to feed the fever of of the growing independence movement in Italy. The drive to overthrow the Austrian and French control of Italy broke into violence in several Italian cities in 1830 and 1831. Bologna, together with a few surrounding cities, actually declared independence, and existed as a self-governing entity (The United Provinces) for several months before being overcome by a fresh assault of the Austrian military. Perhaps this volume was printed during that brief interval-- we have no reliable bibliographical data to inform us. It packages a storm of patriotic poetry by revered poets such as Foscolo and Monti (both recently dead), together with Teresa Bandettini, Giovanni Pindemonte, Giovanni Gherardini, and many others lesser known, unknown, or anonymous. The book is an artifact of the imaginative passion that underlay the independence movement in the years leading up to the Risorgimento of 1860.

Description
New York, New York: American Social Hygiene Association, 1952. Very good. Light toning.. An early 1950s sex education booklet in the form of transcribed conversations "between parents and their children [that] were written by a prominent Catholic layman for nonsectarian use. They are distributed by the American Social Hygiene Association as one example of the helpful material on sex education available to parents today" (upper wrapper verso). Highlights common worries parents have, including how to broach delicate subjects with their children, how to pitch sex education to children of different ages, etc. Covers reproduction, menstruation, puberty, and marriage. The last one provides perhaps the best entertainment to modern readers, and features a teen girl being instructed by both parents what happens during sexual intercourse, in a way that is somehow both frank and completely opaque at the same time (it was the 1950s after all). Single vol. (8.5" by 5.5"), pp. 21, [3], illus., in original illus. wrps with images of children on front. KITTY: Mother, what do husbands and wives do when they get married? MOTHER: (STARTLED IN SPITE OF HERSELF) What do husbands and wives-- (QUICK RECOVERY--CASUALLY NOW) Why do you ask, dear?
