Description
London: Saunders and Otley, 1840. First English language editions. Near Fine. This first complete English translation (with all four volumes) is extremely scarce at auction and in the trade. Four volumes, octavo (leaves 212 x 133 mm). xliv, 333, [1]; viii, 462; xvi, 333, [1]; viii, 365, [1], [2] ads pp. Volumes one and two bound without the terminal leaf of ads in each volume, but otherwise complete, with the folding map and the half-titles. Volume three lacking the terminal ad leaf, otherwise complete. Volume four complete, retaining the ad leaf. A Near Fine copy. Attractively rebound in full polished calf with gilt spine in compartments. Red sprinkled edges. Occasional pencil marginalia, otherwise clean and bright throughout. The first English language edition of de Tocqueville's seminal work on American government, first published in Paris. De Tocqueville, a French aristocrat, visited America between 1831 and 1832, ostensibly to study the penal system, although his interest was considerably broader. It seems logical that France would look to America as a beacon of hope for a successful democracy. After France embraced the goal of democracy in 1789 at the start of the French Revolution, it found itself first in a dictatorship under Napoleon and then in one constitutional monarchy after another during the years following. De Tocqueville's astute observation of several aspects of American society and culture provides an invaluable lens of foreign perspective on our young nation's political growth. Democracy in America was an immediate and sustained success. Almost from the beginning it enjoyed the reputation of being the most acute and perceptive discussion of the political and social life of the United States ever published. Whether perceived as a textbook of American political institutions, an investigation of society and culture, a probing of the psyche of the United States, or a study of the actions of modern democratic society, the book has maintained its place high within the pantheon of political writing. "No better study of a nation's institutions and culture than Tocqueville's Democracy in America has ever been written by a foreign observer; none perhaps as good" (The New York Times). HOWES T-278, 279. Sabin 96062, 96063. Clark III:111. Near Fine.

Description
Three finely illustrated handscrolls (emakimono) on fine smooth torinoko gold-sprinkled paper, with 16 finely executed brush & polychrome paintings, accompanying text in a fine calligraphic cursive hand, rich “golden mud” borders at top & bottom of each painting, speckled with cut gold leaf on reverse side. Three scrolls (323 x 11,640, 12,760, & 17,925 mm.), outer front endpaper covered with blue silk brocade with gold motifs, inner front endpapers of scored gold paper, manuscript label on outside of each scroll on fine decorated paper with nature motifs, entitled “Iwaya monogatari,” modern core rollers with finely decorated colored enamel caps. [Japan]: early Edo. Our three large-format, long, and beautiful “Nara emaki” scrolls contain 16 luxurious paintings, enriched with a dazzling display of gold and rich pigments, illustrating the immensely popular story Iwaya monogatari from the Muromachi era (1136-1573). The story has much in common with the West’s Cinderella, employing many of the same themes. Our scrolls were created at the height of the popularity of Nara ehon and emaki, a time of artistic expression at it most luxurious. The Iwaya monogatari is very much part of the otogi zōshi genre from the Muromachi era, shorter prose narratives that often blended folklore, moral lessons, and elements of fantasy. It tells the story of the hardships of Tainoya, a beautiful young woman who suffers mistreatment and exile at the hands of her stepmother. She finds herself on a rock off the coast of Awaji island, where she is eventually rescued by a fisherman. After further travails, she is recognized at court as “the fairest lady of the land.” These are “deluxe” scrolls with lavish amounts of gold pigment, gold leaf, and gold sprays (kindei 金泥, “golden mud”) in the complex images. All of the text sections — many of which are very long and written in a fine cursive calligraphic hand — have been subtly decorated with underpaintings in gold “mist” and various gold plant and flower motifs using kindei as the pigment. These patterns, known as shitae 下絵, were made on the sheets before the calligrapher began his work. The images are finely painted and highly detailed, with the faces delicately tinted, the patterns of the complex kimono patterns carefully portrayed, sliding doors with images painted on them, complex views of the architecture of the mansion rooms, furnishings, artwork, and tastefully designed gardens with a lush variety of flora. The artist has often used the fukinuki yatai 吹抜屋台 (“blown-off roof”) method to reveal the scene in full. Fine condition, with one small repeating wormhole in the final scroll. Preserved in a wooden box.

Description
Chicago, IL: Hall & Co. (E. D. Mendel, Lithographic & Map Publishing Office, Chicago), 1855. Lithograph map of Chicago, 30 ½ x 24 inches, the map fully enclosed within a wide ornamental border (1 3/8 inches); accompanied by its cloth folder (gilt stamped “Directory Map of Chicago”; very worn and warped). “Shows parks, public buildings, railroad stations, land ownership, and railroads; includes population statistics for 1840 through 1855” (OCLC). Published to be included in The Chicago City Directory, and Business Advertiser, compiled by E. H. Hall (Fourth Annual Edition, with a New map of the City. Chicago: Robert Fergus 1855; AII Ante-Fire Imprints 131). Only a handful of copies of the map are known, however, and Goodspeed’s cataloguing from 1946 states “The corresponding directory of the city calls for a map, but we know of no copy having one; apparently the map was issued separately in this form.” Of the known copies, only one other seems to have the wide floral border as here (the others are enclosed within a simple bold rule). Not in Phillips, Graff, Eberstadt, or Streeter sale. Rare in trade with no copies noted at auction in the past 45 years (ABPC, 1976-2021 and RareBookHub) and the last copy offered for sale on RareBookHub, by Goodspeed, was in 1960. This copy has been laid down on archival paper, with cracks at several folds infilled and with the loss of a little delineation; despite those defects and a little browning, still an attractive copy of this rare map.
