Description
London: Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1931. With My Kindest Regards & Sincere Admiration" - A.J. Cronin to Jean Hersholt A Distinguished Association Copy of Hatter's Castle, Cronin's Powerful First Novel CRONIN, A.J. Hatter's Castle. London: Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1931. First edition, inscribed by the author to the celebrated actor and humanitarian Jean Hersholt, one of the most respected figures in early Hollywood and later namesake of the Academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Octavo (7 11/16 x 5 inches; 195 x 122 mm.). [1-9], 10-637, [3, blank] pp. Publisher's original black cloth over boards, spine lettered in gilt. A near fine copy, the cloth exceptionally well preserved with only minimal signs of handling. Housed in a handsome quarter gold morocco clamshell case over black cloth boards, spine with five raised bands and three black morocco labels lettered in gilt. Provenance: "For Jean Hersholt/with my kindest/regards & sincere/admiration/A.J. Cronin/Woodlea Hill/New Canaan." With Hersholt's pictorial bookplate on the front pastedown, additionally signed by him in ink, further strengthening the association. Hatter's Castle, Cronin's first novel, was an immediate and sensational success upon publication in 1931. Written during a period of convalescence from medical practice, the novel established his reputation overnight. A dark and psychologically penetrating work, it tells the story of James Brodie, a tyrannical hatter whose pride and moral rigidity destroy his family. The novel's: stark realism, moral intensity, and critique of social and domestic tyranny placed Cronin in the lineage of Victorian social novelists while aligning him with modern psychological fiction. This is a highly desirable association copy, uniting literature and early cinema through a personal exchange between author and actor. Copies of Hatter's Castle are not uncommon, but examples with such direct and meaningful provenance - particularly to a figure of Hersholt's stature - are decidedly rare and of special interest to collectors of literary, cinematic, and cultural history. A. J. Cronin (1896-1981), Scottish physician-turned-novelist, whose works combined social conscience with narrative power and achieved enormous international success. Jean Hersholt (1886-1956), Danish-American actor and philanthropist, famed for his roles in over 75 films and for his humanitarian work, later commemorated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences through the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
