Description
1905. (TEXTILES - DYEING). THE THIOGENE COLOURS OF FARBWERKE VORM. MEISTER LUCIUS & BRUNING, HOECHST ON MAIN. ACCORDING TO THE STATE OF THE INDUSTRY IN 1904. New York: H. A. Metz & Co., (1905). Frontispiece of the factory complex in Germany, line illustrations of manufacturing apparatus in the text, and hundreds of swatches of dyed cloths, large and small, in a wide spectrum of colors and patterns. vi,162 pp. Text is in English. 4to., light green cloth sides, gilt title to upper board, publisher's information to lower board, patterned endpapers. Although the backstrip is lacking, the boards are firmly attached. Most leaves have some light dust-soiling at margins and the boards are bowed because the number of mounted samples keeps the individual leaves and the entire volume from closing tightly. A trade catalogue of Thiogene Colors, a subset of the Sulpher Color group, which allowed the direct dyeing of dyestuffs in a greater variety of colors, excepting red, than was formerly possible. The work is divided into two parts; one part deals with the application of Thiogene Colors, and the other describes in detail the various modes of application and the properties of individual colors in the series.

Description
London: John Murray, 1851. First Edition. Good+. First edition, first printing in three volumes. xx, 360, 32; xi, 366; 32; xi, 426 pp; cancelled preface leaf. Bound in Carter's A binding, "very dark blue-green rubbed cloth, uncut, with labels." Good+ with lean to spines, mottling and sunning to cloth, spine lining exposed at head and tail, and dust-soiling to upper textblock edges. Light soiling, inked numbers and and evidence of label removal to endpapers, some hinges and joints starting, Volume II binding cracked. Light toning and scattered foxing throughout, dampstaining to Volume III half-title. The English writer George Borrow spent his childhood following his father’s regiment around the British Isles, and he kept the habit of roaming in adulthood. His picaresque travelogue The Bible in Spain (1843), an account of working as a Protestant Bible salesman in the staunchly Catholic country, was an instant bestseller. Borrow began writing his memoirs around the time of Bible’s publication, but the work shifted to autofiction after he realized that there were events from his life he did not wish to share. He substituted fictional episodes for real ones, and the result confused readers, who didn’t like not knowing how much of the story should be taken as truth. Lavengro was printed in 1851 in a run of just 3,000 copies, and was not printed again for almost twenty years. The novel was reevaluated by critics toward the end of the 19th century, and Borrow’s details of British Gypsy life caught the interest of readers at a time when the Roma were beginning to be more romanticized than reviled. Lavengro is now considered a Victorian classic.

Description
1895. Housman, Laurence. London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., 1895. Original apple-green cloth pictorially decorated in dark green and gilt. First Edition of Housman's second book -- following his similar-content and similarly-bound A FARM IN FAIRYLAND of 1894 -- a collection of eight fairy tales written and illustrated by him, and with the illustrations engraved by his sister Clemence. (Their brother A[lfred]. E[dward]. wasn't too shabby a literary guy, as well.) The illustrations are some of Laurence's most considered and intricate. The foliage backgrounds of various textures also show the expertise of Clemence's engraving technique. She inspired the delightful story "The Luck of the Roses," which Laurence dedicated to her, about a garden of red roses turned white by the death of a fairy. The accompanying drawing, of a couple bathed in lantern light as they peer at the fairy spirit, is a masterwork of light and dark, a homage to [Arthur] Hughes as well as Durer and Rembrandt. Here too is the equally evocative "Happy Returns," a story of old age and youthfulness when a fisherman discovers a magic fish. Laurence drew the grotesque atmosphere of the tale in a silhouette fisherman, his back turned to the viewer so that he becomes a mere rigid figure of terror, being rowed by the swirling fish-spirit into a pool of forbidding darkness [Engen]. This copy is very good-plus, perhaps near-fine (spine slightly darkened with minor rubbing at the ends, cloth slightly bubbled at the very top of the front cover). Engen pp 70-71; NCBEL III 632 & 1098.

First edition. 1900 BODYBUILDING, FITNESS, AND SEXUAL POTENCY IN AMERICA. 18 x 11.5 cm green cloth binding, decorative blindstamped cover borders, embossed gilt title to cover and spine, frontispiece of nude Macfadden with tissue guard facing preface, p 5; 237 pp, 3 pp illustrated advertisements. Cover gilt dulled, light browning to pages, text clean and unmarked. Very good in custom archival mylar cover. Verso title page, "To assist in stiffing that horrible curse of prudishness and the ignorance of sex which it entails is the object which has influenced the writing of this book. To all those whose souls and bodies are tortured with weakness because of the criminal neglect of prudish parents, or because of their own indiscretions or excesses resulting from ignorance of sex, this book is most respectfully dedicated. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity: Push onward and upward. If you are not strong, if you have not the energy, the ambition, the power, which lead me above the prosaic, the commonplace, develop it now. Make up your nind that strength and health of a high degree shall be yours, and work for this end with determination and persistence, and superb physical powers will be your glorious reward." BERNARR A. MACFADDEN (1868 – 1955) was an American proponent of physical culture, a combination of bodybuilding with nutritional and health theories. He founded the long-running magazine publishing company Macfadden Publications. As a young child, Macfadden was weak and sickly. After being orphaned by the time he was 11, he was placed with a farmer and began working on the farm. He claimed that hard work and wholesome food on the farm turned him into a strong and fit boy. When he was 13, however, he moved to St. Louis and took a desk job. Quickly his health deteriorated again and by 16 he described himself as a "physical wreck". He started exercising with dumbbells, walking up to six miles a day with a lead weight in his clothes, and he became a vegetarian. He claimed to have quickly regained his previous health. In 1899, Macfadden founded Physical Culture magazine, and in 1900 published The Virile Power of Superb Manhood. Macfadden popularized the practice of fasting that previously had been associated with illnesses such as anorexia nervosa. He felt strongly that fasting was one of the surest ways to physical health. Macfadden established many "healthatoriums" in the eastern and midwestern states. These institutions offered educational programs, such as "The Physical Culture Training School". Although he gained his reputation for physical culture and fitness, he gained much notoriety for his views on sexual behavior. He viewed intercourse as a healthy activity and not solely a procreative one; this was a different attitude than most physicians had at the time. Nicknamed "Body Love Macfadden" by Time magazine, he was branded a "kook" and a charlatan by many, and denounced by the medical establishment. Throughout his life, he campaigned tirelessly against "pill-pushers", processed foods, and prudery. Morris Fishbein wrote that "In his campaign, Bernarr Macfadden aligned himself with the border-line cultists that oppose scientific medicine and devote themselves to the promotion of some single conception of disease causation, prevention, and treatment."
