Description
np: np, 1907. framed. Fine. Beautiful photograph signed and inscribed by Roosevelt as president: “To / Mrs. Edgar D. Crumpacker / with the regards of / Theodore Roosevelt / Mar 6th 1907”. A rich, warm-toned image of Roosevelt, sitting in profile, looking magisterial. Beneath the image, on the original matte, Roosevelt has presented the photo to Charlotte Ann Lucas Crumpacker (“Mrs. Edgar D. Crumpacker”). The Crumpacker’s were very active politically – Edgar Crumpacker served eight terms in Congress (1897 - 1913) as a Republican representative from Indiana and notably was part of Roosevelt’s 1905 inaugural committee. He is best known for introducing and championing the Crumpacker Bill – an attempt to fight the widespread suppression of the African American vote in the southern states. (The bill, unfortunately, did not pass.) The recipient, Charlotte Crumpacker, was one of the founders of the Congressional Club, a society, founded by Congressional charter in 1908 for spouses of elected officials to “facilitate bi-partisan efforts, raise awareness of and support charities, and provide educational enrichment” (Congressional Club Mission Statement). Although this is a studio photo, the photographer has not been identified and it appears to be quite rare – we cannot find other examples that have been offered for sale. Size: Image = approx. 6.5 x 9 inches. Sight with matte = 8 x 11 inches. Very handsomely framed with descriptive plaque beneath the image to an overall size of approx. 18 x 21 inches. Evidence of matte burn, image fine, inscription and signature strong.

Description
Zalt-Bommel: Johannes Noman en Zoon, 1819. Second Edition. Quarter Mottled Calf. Cloth boards. Near Fine. A visual feast of Rococo garden design, its pleasure pavilions, bridges, lay-outs and appurtenances such as even gondolas. Thus the title translates proximately as "A Repository of Garden Ornaments; or Collection of Models of Construction and Ornament, for Large and Small Pleasure Gardens, Chiefly such as can be made at Low Cost." N.d., but Second Edition issued in 1819. If only ..... 4to. 28.5 by 23 cm. Title leaf, half title leaf, iv pp. -- preface. Then 190 hand-colored color plates (numbered with Roman numerals), followed by 100 pp. explanation of plates, and concluding with viii pp. General Register. The work was first published in parts in Amsterdam between 1802 and 1809. Van Laar ran a tree nursery at Alkmaar. Berlin Katalog 3409. Without the 8-page "Generaal register van de tuinsieraden." Binding has light wear, mainly touches of rubbing along the edges. Generally clean within. Title page has light finger soiling, and this appears here and there, but to an even lesser extent, on some of the plates. There are a few very light dampstains in the margins of a handful of plates. The Verkaring, to Explanatory text, is conspicuously more browned and also more soiled, with some foxing. In grading the book, and relating it to the other copies we have handled and/or seen, it is a toss up between Very Good Plus and Near Fine.

Description
1934. First Edition. TRAVEN, B. The Death Ship. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $2300.First American (preferred) edition of B. Traven's gripping first novel, the first to be translated into English by the author, in original dust jacket. The mysterious author B. Traven first published this work in Germany in 1925 as Das Totenschiff. It appeared in an English version translated by Eric Sutton (also in 1934), but this first American edition, to which Traven himself contributed the translation as well as revisions, is considered superior. This politically charged novel—in which the narrator, who has lost his passport, finds himself unable to settle in any country and thus compelled to work on the titular ""death ship""—remains particularly relevant in our age of refugees and ""illegal"" immigrants seeking work. The Death Ship is Traven's first major success, and most popular novel after The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Book near-fine, with a touch of rubbing to lower rear corner. Scarce original dust jacket with a bit of dust soiling, minor archival tape reinforcement to verso along folds, extremely good.
