New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1900. First edition. The scarce, unaltered version of his first book about a young woman who moves to Chicago in search of her personal version of the American Dream. Ranked 33rd on the Modern Library's 100 Best Novels list. Approximately 1,000 copies were printed before Doubleday halted publication, at his wife's urging, due to the frank nature of the story. The publisher made little effort to advertise it, and less than half were sold before it's believed to have been suppressed. This copy from the library of book collector, Arthur Swann, with his bookplate on front pastedown. Shadow of another bookplate under Swann's, small ownership stamp on front endpaper, and light repair to hinges. Otherwise, very nearly fine with just a touch of minor edge rubbing. Housed in red cloth chemise and gilt-stamped quarter red leather slipcase with matching cloth sides. Nicest copy we've handled.

Description
]. 1 p.l., 4, 25, 34, 29; 37, 30, 28 folding leaves. Six kwŏn in two volumes. Small folio (360 x 223 mm.), orig. wrappers (some wear & rubbing), handwritten title on covers, orig. stitching. [Hansŏng]: Kyujanggak, [ca. 1799]. A royal gift, presented by the king of Korea. In 1794, King Chŏngjo (1752-1800) of the Chŏson dynasty compiled and had printed a collection of the letters of the great Neo-Confucian philosopher Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130-1200) to be disseminated throughout his kingdom. As King Chŏngjo wrote on this occasion, “the learning of Master Zhu, in its expansive and oceanic plentitude, is best represented by his collected writings; the writings of Master Zhu, in their utmost subtlety and precision, are best represented by his personal correspondences” (“Chusŏ paeksŏn yukkwŏn” 朱書百選六卷, in Hongjae chŏnsŏ 弘齋全書 [Collected Writings of King Chŏngjo], kwŏn 180). Drawing from a number of established collections, he selected 100 letters and carefully arranged them, “beginning with the letter to Yanping 延平 [i.e., Li Tong 李侗, 1093-1163, Zhu Xi’s teacher] to pronounce his lineage of instruction, and ending with the letter to Zhiqing 直卿 [i.e., Huang Gan 黃干, 1152-1221, Zhu Xi’s disciple] to demonstrate the bestowment of teachings.” That 1794 edition, with moderate marginal annotations on “personal and place names, as well as philological glosses and references,” was sent to be printed with the chŏngyuja 丁酉字 metal type, cast in the year 1777. Printed copies were sent to various official printing houses throughout the kingdom and used as models to carve woodblocks for a xylographic edition (ibid.). Sometime around 1799, realizing that in the capital only metal type copies of the book remained, the king ordered woodblocks to be made locally as well for the work so that more copies could be printed and distributed (Chŏngjo, “Sinin ogyŏng…” 新印五經…, in Hongjae chŏnsŏ, kwŏn 36). Most woodblock re-editions of this work retain the original title-page, which contains not only the title Royal Edition of a Hundred Selected Letters of Zhu (K. Ŏjŏng chusŏ paeksŏn 御定朱書百選) but also the inscription in seal script that reads 甲寅內閣活印 — “palace edition, printed with movable type in the kabin year [1794].” This title-page, compounded with the absence of any additional paratextual information, likely resulted in the description of these woodblock re-editions as the original metal type 1794 edition, in spite of lacking the features of metal typography. We have carefully examined our copy and found that it was likely printed with the woodblocks carved around 1799 (undoubtedly through the cannibalization of a typographic copy) and kept within the royal library. Certain qualities of our copy make it distinctive: not only are the cursive characters rendered with impressive clarity, the marginal annotations mentioned in King Chŏngjo’s edict are also preserved in faux-manuscript style — a feature absent in some other copies we have consulted (erroneously described as the 1794 edition). The best evidence that our copy was printed by the royal library (K. kyujanggak 奎章閣), of course, is the fact that it was a royal gift (K. naesabon 內賜本), presented by the king himself to notable officials or individuals, in this case an examinee from Suwŏnbu 水原府. The “Record of Presentation” (K. naesagi 內賜記) is handwritten on the front endpaper of the first volume as usual and is dated to the second month of Xianfeng 5 (1855). However, both the name of the recipient and the official responsible for the Record have been obscured. A name, Im Hŭi-ji 林熙之, is written next to the name of the recipient, but in a clearly different hand and ink. Records of the Royal Secretariat (K. Sŭngjŏngwŏn ilgi 承政院日記) states that on the 29th day of this month, copies of the Hundred Selected Letters were indeed bestowed to six examinees, but all their names are not given. On the first leaf of the table of contents and facing the title-page is the Seal of Presentation (K. naesa’in 內賜印), which reads 奎章之宝 [Treasure of the Kyujanggak]. This seal was used for presentation copies roughly between 1782 and 1894, as shown by Lee & Song in “A Study on Naesabon Preserved in Kyujanggak” (in Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society 43, no. 2). This book is rare outside of East Asia. We find three copies under WorldCat 35891835 (with a misspelled title and described as the 1794 edition on account of the aforementioned title-page, which our copy also possesses). None of them is described as a presentation copy. Very good set. Some occasional soiling and dampstaining. Unimportant worming, mostly marginal. ❧ King Chŏngjo, Hongjae chŏnsŏ 弘齋全書, in Han’guk munjip ch’onggan 韓國文集叢刊, digital access via krpia.co.kr.

Frankfurt an der Oder: Friedrich Hartmann, 1597. THIRD EDITION (the 1st ed. of Vol. I appeared in 1556; 1st ed. of Vol. II in 1565). Hardcover. Fine. Bound in matching 17th c. stiff vellum, ruled in blind (covers slightly bowed, vellum lightly soiled, small split at head of rear hinge of Vol. I, 1 end-band loose). The contents are in overall excellent condition, with minor blemishes (Vol I: leaf D2 with small natural paper flaw affecting a few letters, small paste stain to lvs. m3, q2, and GG1; a few index lvs. lightly browned. Vol. II: title very slightly frayed; first four lvs. damp-stained at head, a handful of gatherings with very light damp-stains in the lower margin.) The dimensions of the two volumes, in matching early bindings, differ in size by about 1 cm. Edges of text-block stained an even blue. Third printing of Martin Luther's early correspondence, edited by Joannes Aurifaber (1519-1575), Luther’s private secretary, who lived with Luther at the time of the Reformer’s death. The first volume contains 255 letters from 1507 to 1522 (from the celebration of his first Mass to his removal to Wartburg Castle after the Diet of Worms). The second has 407 letters, from 1520 to 1528. These letters offer a revealing view of Luther’s private and public thoughts on matters of pivotal importance to the early reformation. They include a "cover letter" to a copy of the 95 Theses, written on the very day (October 31st, 1517) that Luther nailed the Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. In this letter, addressed to Cardinal Albrecht, Archbishop of Magdeberg and Mainz, Luther requests that the indulgence traffic be halted. In a related letter, written as a dedication to his explanations of the 95 Theses, Luther gives an account of his understanding of penitence, which led him finally to the attack on indulgences. Included are letters to Pope Leo X (1475-1521), King Henry VIII (1491-1547), Georg Spalatin (1484-1545), Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560), Frederick, Elector of Saxony (1463-1525), Emperor Charles V (1500-1558), Andreas Karlstadt (1486-1541), Cardinal Tommaso de Vio Cajetan (1470-1534), and many others. This collection also includes Luther’s first letter to Erasmus, written at Wittenberg on March 28th, 1519 (Vol. I, p. 156-158) and several letters in which Luther discusses his opinions of Erasmus’ theology. The letters’ chronological arrangement allows the reader to follow the development of Luther’s thought and the political ramifications of his actions. Luther provides first-hand accounts of his efforts to avoid a trial in Rome, his negotiations with the Pope’s secretary, Karl von Miltitz, and the papal legate, Cardinal Cajetan, and his eventual appearance before the Emperor at the Diet of Worms. Included are Luther’s letter to Cajetan (Oct., 1518), written as Luther fled the Augsburg to avoid being kidnapped and taken to Rome, and a letter of apology to Pope Leo X (Jan., 1519) in which Luther argues that he is now powerless to control the power of his own ideas: "The demand is made that I recant my Disputation. If such a revocation could accomplish what I was attempting to do with my theses, I would issue it without hesitation. Now, however, through the antagonism and pressure of my enemies, my writings are spread farther than I ever had expected and are so deeply rooted in the hearts of so many people that I am not in the position to revoke them.". In a letter written after his appearance at Worms, Luther writes to the Emperor to express his gratitude and ask for continued protection. He also gives a vivid account of the proceedings and a critique of his own performance. "Your Sacred Majesty ordered that I be asked first whether I would acknowledge said little books as mine, and second whether or not I would be ready to revoke them, or would uphold the. When I had acknowledged that [these books] were mine... I pointed out with great reverence and submission that the following was my opinion: since I had fortified my books with clear and intelligible Scripture passages, it does not seem to me right or just to deny the Word of God and revoke my little books in this way, nor could I do it in any way. [...] In addition to all this, it was requested and demanded of me that I answer simply and plainly whether or not I was ready to recant. Again I answered as humbly as I could: since my conscience is bound by the Scripture passages which I have quoted in my little books, I could under no circumstances recant anything, unless I be better informed." In a letter to Nicholas von Amsdorf (folio 326), Luther describes his capture and the ride to Wartburg Castle. The first volume concludes with a series of letters to Melanchthon and others, written from the Wartburg, in which Luther discusses the volatile situation at Erfurt and Wittenberg and the actions of Karlstadt, in particular. In these letters, Luther discusses his ideas on clerical and monastic celibacy, communion, private mass, the dynamics of faith, etc.

London, 1813. First Edition. —the subtitle was changed in the 2nd edition. 3 vols. A few small, faint spots to the back cover of vol. II (the only flaw) else fine and unworn, brighter than a Hollywood smile, in a royal binding of early 19th century green cloth (ca. 1835), the spines elaborately gilt, with the Royal Arms of Britain and Hanover embossed on the covers (the King of England’s family arms, though traceable to his brother Ernst). No half-titles in vols. II and III but with the vol. III ads. Unlike many pre–Victorian novels, this one is a laudable read, and scarce in any condition. 3 sets sold at auction in the last 35 years, all of them piñata quality (one a clunky modern rebind, one in old but nasty half calf, and one in worn and dull half morocco). Ours is all but unbelievable in this spectacular state of preservation with this impeccable provenance. Coll: xx, 224. [2], 239 [blank]. [2], 302 [2pp. ads]. Ref: Barron, Horror Lit. 1-5. This is not an obscure book. Note it’s reference as one of Barron’s foundation books of all horror literature written from 1762 to 1824. The Heroine’s thrust is not quite comic, though it does have droll jeopardy and the fall of dignity, and it’s not quite gothic though it does have granite skies, howling winds, and an old manor with secret passages and a sketchy deed. but rather it is the first pure and unabashed satire of horror literature with something of both, anticipating Austen’s Northanger Abbey (1818), yet drawing in other ways from Cervantes Don Quixote (1605) and Fielding’s Tom Jones (1749). The heroine, Cherry Wilkinson, rejects her rural life and adopts the identities of the fictional female characters she admires from reading Gothic novels (think of 21st century little girls who fantasize about being Wonder Woman). Barrett sets her in the kind of chaos usually found in newspaper articles that end with the words, “...and then he turned the gun on himself,” commencing a series of picaresque adventures, some of them previously unprecedented in literature. Cherry starts out optimistic (convinced that all will be well) and grows to have faith (certain that things make sense regardless of how they turn out), and she discovers that it’s hard to be a woman but even harder to become one. And if you think we just hype these books without cause, here’s some bubbling enthusiasm from a knowing and contemporary reviewer: “I finished The Heroine last night and was very much amused by it...It diverted me exceedingly...I have torn through the third volume...I do not think it falls off. It is a delightful burlesque particularly on the Radcliffe style.” —Jane Austen And from a critique revisiting it a few years later: “Racy, dashing, and palpable.” —Edgar Allan Poe.

1852. MACKAY, Charles. Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. London: Office of the National Illustrated Library, 1852. Two volumes. Octavo, original publisher's brown gilt- and blind-stamped cloth, elaborately gilt-stamped spines, printed endpapers, top edges gilt. $2800.Second edition of this important, entertaining and influential early study of crowd behavior, subsequently used to explore popular psychology and to chart the stock market, with numerous wood-engraved illustrations, in original gilt-stamped cloth.Noted Scottish poet and journalist Charles Mackay attempted in this work to document and explain major ""popular delusions,"" or seemingly irrational instances of mass action and belief. ""Men,"" the author contends, ""think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds."" In developing his theories of mass behavior, Mackay analyzes a breadth of historical examples ranging from witch hunts, alchemists and famous haunted houses to the South Sea Bubble of 1720 and the Crusades. Mackay's work has had a remarkably far-reaching impact, influencing such diverse fields as popular psychology and the charting of the stock market—as noted by The New York Times, which urged, ""Any investor who has not read Charles Mackay's 'Tulipomania,' from his classic Extraordinary Popular Delusions, first published in 1841, should grab this book for that exercise alone."" Each volume with engraved frontispiece, engraved and letterpress title pages, and numerous wood-engraved illustrations. Volume II with two rear leaves of publisher's advertisements. See Norman 1406. Owner pencil signature to front free endpaper of Volume I partially erased. Bookseller ticket to rear pastedown of Volume II.Interiors clean; light wear to spine ends, rubbing to corners, cloth clean, gilt bright. An extremely good copy in the original cloth.

1755. First Edition. STRANGE, John. Reports of Adjudged Cases in the Courts of Chancery, King's Bench, Common Pleas and Exchequer, from Trinity Term in the second Year of King George I to Trinity Term in the twenty-first Year of King George II. London: Henry Lintot, 1755. Two volumes. Thick folio, contemporary full tan calf, raised bands, red morocco spine labels. $2400.First edition of this posthumously published collection of reports and transcriptions of cases from 1715 to 1750, with engraved frontispiece portrait of Strange in the first volume, in contemporary calf boards.Strange served as Solicitor General early in his career and was Master of the Rolls—the senior Civil Justice judge—at the time of his death in 1754. From early in his career he had been compiling notes and transcripts of legal cases. ""Before his death Strange had been preparing his collection of reports for publication. Because of his willingness to lend his notes to judges there had been many opportunities for copies of this material, unscrupulously obtained, to pass into the hands of legal hacks. It included summaries and arguments of cases where no judgment had been made. It was Strange's chief concern, therefore, to have ready a definitive compilation of reports of adjudged cases that could be published in the event of any pirating of his work. Accordingly, when some of Strange's case notes did indeed appear shortly after his death under the title of A Collection of Select Cases Relating to Evidence, by a Late Barrister-at-Law, his executors acted swiftly to suppress it, and in 1755 his eldest son published the reports as authentically selected, dedicating them to Lord Hardwicke. Reprinted in second and third editions in 1782 and 1795, Strange's reports endured in their usefulness for the rest of the century and after"" (DNB). Evidence of bookplate removal in both volumes.Interior quite clean, handsome contemporary calf binding with expert repairs and restoration to joints, spine ends and board extremities.

London: Grant Richards, 1903. FIRST EDITION. Original red cloth with title in gilt on front board and spine, top edge gilt; minor soiling to bottom edge, otherwise an excellent copy preserved in a slipcase. First edition, first issue with the half-title and publisher’s ads. This semi-autobiographical tale is regarded by some as the first twentieth century novel, and features a forcefully satirical indictment of Victorian-era England’s chief institutions. Recounting his troubled upbringing and subsequent adult life, Butler’s tale shines a light onto the deceptiveness of Victorian domestic life. Foreshadowing the destruction of nineteenth century middle class ideals in the fallout of the Great War, we’re reminded of the ways in which successive generations have continued to question conventional values. Written over nearly eleven years, this text was published posthumously, Butler believing his writing style too contentious. It has remained continuously in print since its publication. Butler (1835-1902) is most well-known for his classically utopian satire Erewhon. He is regarded as a forerunner of the New Zealand utopian/dystopian tradition of literature. Despite his antagonistic writing style, Butler’s work played a crucial role in the early twentieth century reaction against Victorianism.

Description
Boston: B. Russell, 1798. 71, [1 blank] pp. Stitched, uncut. Generously margined. A piece from top left corner of title page has been cut out [no text loss] with one clean closed cut that carried through to second leaf [no text loss]. Lightly dusted and toned, a few small blank edge chips, light scattered foxing. Good+. This private Boston printing of Adams's Message includes "the famous 'XYZ' correspondence." The document includes Adams's letters credentialing Marshall, Pinckney, and Gerry as his envoys to adjust difficulties with France; and their blow-by-blow description of the whole sordid affair, in which Mr. X demanded that "a sum of money was required for the pocket of the Directory and ministers, which would be at the disposal of M. Talleyrand: and that a loan would also be insisted on. Mr. X. said, if we acceded to these measures, M. Talleyrand had no doubt that all our differences with France might be accommodated." Mr. Y. advised, "You must pay money, you must pay a great deal of money." Adams asked Congress to keep this document secret while an appropriate response was considered. Evans 34815. Howes A199.

GILMAN, PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY: "In accordance with your request, a small edition has been printed, for the use of the University, of a Report of the Oyster Commission of the State of Maryland, which has just been presented to the Legislature of this State. Its author is one of our own staff, Professor W. K. BROOKS, Ph. D., who has devoted the greater part of his time during the last eighteen months to the study of the problem of perpetuating the oyster beds of the Chesapeake. The fact that he was made a member of the Oyster Commission, by appointment of the Governor of the State, should not conceal the part which this University has taken in the prosecution of the enquiry. Dr. Brooks, for the last six years, has been the Director of the Chesapeake Zoological Laboratory, an organization maintained at the expense of the Johns Hopkins University for the study of the manifold forms of living creatures which are found upon our sea-board. As long ago as 1878 he perceived the importance of the oyster, in its economical and in its scientific aspects, and began a series of prolonged, delicate, and original investigations respecting the mode by which the young are propagated, and the conditions of their early life." WILLIAM KEITH BROOKS (1848 – 1908) was an American zoologist who studied under Louis Agassiz at Harvard, receiving his PhD in 1875. A year later he became a junior faculty member at Johns Hopkins University when it opened, teaching and researching marine biology. He founded the Chesapeake Zoological Laboratory where he spent most summers, moving each summer between Crisfield, Maryland, Hampton, Virginia, tBeaufort, North Carolina, Jamaica, and the Tortugas. Commissioned by the state of Maryland to study the American oyster, Brooks' findings led to the discovery that fertilization of this type of oyster, unlike the European form, occurred outside the body. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society, National Academy of Sciences, the National Philosophical Society, Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, the Boston Society of Natural History, the Maryland Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Society of Zoologists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Royal Microscopical Society.

Description
A periodical entirely devoted to personal ads from individuals and couples throughout France seeking erotic contacts; published in a random order with no subdivisions by type or even by region. Despite the reference to "gay" in the publication title, the advertisers are gay, lesbian and bisexual (or "bissex" in the parlance of the journal); many present themselves as "travesti" or "transsex" — or as interested in same. A considerable number of the ads solicit participants in an array of kink and fetish practices. Approximately one-third of the ads include black-and-white photos of the advertiser, all of them White. By contrast, the front wrap is devoted to a photo of a pair of muscular young Black men, one in shorts and one nude. Offered here is the only recorded copy of an issue of New-gay. The frequency and the dates of first and last issues are unknown. No holdings in WorldCat or the Catalogue Collectif de France. CONDITION: Minor wear & soiling to wraps; annotation in blue ballpoint on front wrap: "Novembre 1983"; dent to outside corners of front wrap & initial leaves. NOTE: Masked for public posting. Unmasked image upon request.
