Description
1793. (PAINE, Thomas). The Whole Proceedings on the Trial of an Information Exhibited ex Officio by the King's Attorney-General Against Thomas Paine. London: Martha Gurney, 1793. Octavo, period-style half brown calf and marbled boards, red morocco spine label; pp. (1-3), 4-196. $4000.Second edition, issued in the same year as the first, of the court transcript to Thomas Paine's 1792 British trial for seditious libel. A scarce and valued record, handsomely bound.Paine's Rights of Man is ""the clearest of all expositions of the basic principles of democracy"" (PMM 241). Here, recording one of history's most compelling legal battles, is the transcript of the 1792 British prosecution of Thomas Paine, a battle that began with the printing of the second part of Rights of Man. Within months, the government issued a Royal Proclamation aimed at suppressing Paine's writings and that same day, he was charged with seditious libel. In addition, he soon became the object of government-sponsored propaganda. ""Spies tailed him constantly on London's streets"" and when the trial postponed until December, friends like William Blake advised him to flee the country: 'You must not go home, or you are a dead man.'"" (Keane, 337, 343). Heeding the advice, Paine escaped to France and the trial began in absentia.""Thomas Paine,"" the prosecution proclaimed, ""late of London, gentlemen, being a wicked, malicious, seditious, and ill-disposed person… [did] represent, suggest and cause it to be believed, that the… hereditary regal government of this kingdom was a tyranny."" With Paine absent, his lawyer Thomas Erskine offered an eloquent defense of his friend and the rights of a free press. But a hand-picked jury quickly returned the verdict of guilty and ""Paine was now an outlaw. Should he ever set foot in England again, he could be imprisoned for life or even executed"" (Fruchtman, 290). The court record was recorded verbatim by Joseph Gurney whose earlier transcripts for the House of Commons resulted in the ""first public acknowledgement of the verbal accuracy of shorthand"" in any country (DNB). Bound without two final advertisement leaves. Gimbel-Yale, 78. Sabin 96918. ESTC T5905. First and last pages slightly toned, otherwise a clean, fresh copy, handsomely bound.

Description
1994 February 1994. 38.5" x 27.5". Original white poster for February 9, 1994 Nirvana show at the Palau dels Esports de Barcelona (Barcelona Sports Palace), printed in blue. About fine poster, with just a small spot of soiling. Overall, a rare poster for one of Nirvana's final shows, in excellent condition. This poster is for the third concert that Nirvana played on their European In Utero tour. One source writes, "If there was a beginning of the end of Kurt Cobain's short life, that final chapter most certainly began in February 1994" (Guitar World). The European tour was abruptly cut short when Cobain overdosed on alcohol and Rohypnol on March 4th. Setlist: Radio Friendly Unit Shifter Drain You Breed Serve the Servants Come as You Are Smells Like Teen Spirit Sliver Dumb In Bloom About a Girl Lithium Pennyroyal Tea School Polly Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle Very Ape Rape Me Territorial Pissings Encore: The Man Who Sold the World All Apologies On a Plain Heart-Shaped Box About the collection: This collection of Nirvana concert mini-posters, flyers, and posters covers nearly the entire lifespan of the legendary grunge band, from a small show on December 1st, 1988, six months before the group's first studio album Bleach was released, to a March 18th, 1994 show that the band was slated to play as a part of their European In Utero tour (a show that never happened due to frontman Kurt Cobain's deteriorating health.) On March 4th, 1994, the European tour was cancelled after Cobain overdosed on alcohol and Rohypnol, and he committed suicide a month later. Some highlights include the earliest mini-poster (December 1988), which features the band as the third band on a three act bill (and in the smallest-sized lettering), a mini-poster for the band's January 1990 show at Hub Ballroom at the University of Washington, which produced Charles Peterson's famous stage diving photo (and, according to rumors, a ban on Nirvana ever playing again at a University of Washington venue), a flyer and mini-poster for two shows during Nirvana's Nevermind tour in the fall of 1991, and three beautiful posters for the band's In Utero tour, two of which feature the album's iconic winged figure. This collection features wonderful artistic variety, all with a very DIY and grunge feel. They also highlight the various grunge, punk, and alternative rock bands that Nirvana performed alongside during the early days of their touring.. Broadside. Near Fine.

Six pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear. Slight slope to the spine. Light internal foxing, with roughly a dozen pages showing more prominent foxing. Underlining and marking in pencil on p. 42. An attractive copy. Howes W-651. Graff 4741. Zamorano 80, 80. The author's recounting of his experiences as a prospector in the California Mines. "Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Volume IV" referred to his account in this way, "Becoming a miner among the miners, he had the most ample opportunities to learn their conditions, their prospects, their sufferings, and their rewards. He describes plainly what he saw. He borrows no colors from the fancy... Eminently free from exaggeration, it shows the hardships by which the gold of California was procured on the first discovery of the placers. Its tendency is to discourage emigration. He would advise those that are tolerably well off at home to be content.

First edition; 12 x 8 1/2; pp. [52]; brown pictorial wraps; glassine dust jacket; illustrated with color frontis plate, numerous black-and-white photographs, and a map; book with a small crease to lower right corners and minor age-toning to leaves - in very good to near fine condition; DJ with a few small cuts to front panel and some loss to back panel - in fair condition. A beautiful and early Ansel Adams collection of Yosemite photographs, the book was published by the Yosemite Park and Curry Company - founded in 1925 and one of the largest and longest operating concessioners in the national park system - and edited by their Publicity Director Stanley Plumb. It would go through several editions, in part due to the fact that Ansel Adams was quite unhappy with the representation of his images in print.
