Description
Philadelphia: Printed by Lydia R Bailey, 1840 & 1847. Later printings.. Three quarter leather over horizontal ribbed cloth; three quarter red leather over marbled boards. . Good; some spotting; moderate wear to the bindings.. 8vo, I - [4], [1] - 69 pp.; II - [4], [1] - 70 pp. This handbook was meant to be used in conjunction with Wood's lectures. It is an outline presentation of all the botanical and mineral elements utilized in the Dispensatory of the United States. Both copies are heavily annotated and interleaved throughout. The 1840 edition was once owned by Henry Race who is responsible for the notes. He took his medical degree from the Univ. of Pennsylvania in 1843 and practiced medicine in Pittstown, NJ. Race went to the gold fields of California in 1849 and returned to Pittstown in 1851 to practice medicine. The edition of 1847 has been entirely reset and revised from that of 1840. It bears the notes of Claudius Mastin who was born in Huntsville, AL and completed his medical degree at the Univ. of Pennsylvania in 1849. He then travelled to Europe and returned to Mobile to practice. In 1861 he volunteered for the Confederate Army serving at Shiloh under General Polk and then being appointed to the post of Inspector of the Army of Mississippi. He survived the war and went on to be a noted surgeon in Mobile and later head of the Am. Surgical Assoc. in 1890 (see Kelly & Burrage). Both copies of the Syllabus offered here have extensive notes throughout and provide considerable insight to the teachings of Wood. Both copies were printed by Lydia Bailey, one of the most accomplished printers in post-colonial America. She took over her husband's business in 1808 at a time when his trade was at its nadir. She, a master printer, soon proved a commercial success and at its peak employed 40 or more people in the firm. See Nipps, Checklist .... for Bailey.

Description
1906. First Edition. CHURCHILL, Winston. Lord Randolph Churchill. London: Macmillan, 1906. Two volumes. Octavo, original burgundy cloth, top edges gilt, uncut. $2000.First edition of Churchill's distinguished biography of his father, with two photographic frontispiece portraits of Lord Randolph, in the original cloth.""In My Early Life, Winston joked about his father's low opinion of him… Beneath Winston's tremendous stature as a world leader, his belligerence, his confidence, there ran this dark, poignant thread, of a son working vainly to win his father's approval"" (Rubin, 106, 108). ""Outside Parliament, Churchill devoted much of his time during 1904 and 1905 to compiling a biography of Lord Randolph. He was motivated in part by a desire for an intimate knowledge of his father that had been denied him during Lord Randolph's lifetime… When the book emerged in 1906, it was widely hailed as one of the best political biographies in English and its prose style is still greatly admired today… Contemporary readers were struck by the frankness and openness of the account, contrasting favorably with the pious acts of homage served up as biography by other sons of famous fathers. It was, after all, a study in failure rather than success. The writing of the biography marked the point at which Churchill at last outgrew his father's memory"" (Grant, 47). Illustrated with numerous full-page plates and manuscript facsimiles. Cohen A17.1. Woods A8a. Langworth, 68-71. Gift inscriptions, owner signatures, owner inkstamps.Scattered foxing, almost wholly to fore-edge; cloth unusually nice and fresh with spines mildly toned. A near-fine copy.

Description
1809. First Edition. (SLAVERY—ABOLITION) MONTGOMERY, James, GRAHAME, James and BENGER, E[lizabeth]. Poems on the Abolition of the Slave Trade. London: Printed for R. Bowyer, 1809 [i.e. 1810]. Tall quarto, contemporary brown calf gilt rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, marbled endpapers and edges. $2000.First edition of famed publisher and artist Bowyer’s richly illustrated volume featuring eloquent anti-slavery poems by Montgomery, Grahame and Benger, a major antislavery work issued shortly after Britain’s abolition of the slave trade, with engraved portraits of abolitionists Sharpe, Clarkson and Wilberforce, engraved allegorical title page and nine full-page engravings after paintings by artist Sir Robert Smirke, a handsome wide-margined copy in contemporary boards. This handsomely illustrated volume features three epic poems—Montgomery's The West Indies, Grahame's Africa Delivered and Elizabeth Benger's A Poem Occasioned by the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1806. All were ""commissioned by the London publisher Robert Bowyer, for inclusion in a lavish volume of antislavery poetry… timed to celebrate the abolition of the slave trade"" (Basker, Amazing Grace, 612). With biographies and engraved full-page medallion portraits of leading British abolitionists Sharpe, Clarkson and Wilberforce, Poems on the Abolition of the Slave Trade is especially noted for its nine full-page engravings and the allegorical title page vignette, engraved by Scriven and Worthington after paintings by renowned artist Sir Robert Smirke, whose works were considered ""gems in the art of history painting"" (American Daily Advertiser). On presenting a copy to George III, Bowyer described this as a ""most beautifully embellished volume of Poems (which have been written expressly for the occasion) on the Abolition of the Slave Trade"" (Baptist Quarterly, 35). Poems won early critical praise as an ""elegant publication on the Abolition of this traffic, and we congratulate the poets, the artist and the editor"" (Monthly Review). First edition: plates dated ""Dec. 1, 1809""; portraits dated ""Jan 1, 1810."" With engraved and letterpress title pages. With directions to the binder leaf bound in at rear. Lowndes, 1591. Description
Universal. No binding. Near Fine. [Los Angeles: Universal Pictures, 1983]. From the estate of James Allen, the film's art director. Original artwork, 27 9/16 x 15 5/8" in colored pencil and ink titled "Ardmore Police Dept. Streets of Fire", signed and dated "James Allen '83". Original artwork in pencil and ink on vellum measuring 21 x 10 1/2" (54 x 27 cm). A logo for "Road Masters Chelsea", a gang which threaten Reva's (Deborah Van Valkenburgh) diner, but whom her brother Cody (Michael Paré) makes fast work of. Three pieces of artwork (color photos printed on art paper of Allen's original designs) ranging in size from 20 x 12 1/2" (51 x 32 cm) to 24 x 20" (61 x 51 cm). These are definitely unique, one of a kind pieces, since Allen had only one of each printed for his internal archive. "Tonight is What it Means to Be Young" is the glorious anthem with which the film begins and ends in Walter Hill's great, anarchic rock-and-roll epic. The film at the time garnered little critical or popular attention, but it is now recognized as one of the classics of 80s Hollywood cinema (a recent 70mm Los Angeles screening at the American Cinematheque, which I attended, was a massive success with an audience of mostly people who had not even been born in 1984, when the film was released). Streets of Fire is an action crime neo-noir film directed by Walter Hill, from a screenplay by Hill and Larry Gross. Described on the poster and in the opening credits as "A Rock & Roll Fable", the film combines elements of the automobile culture and music from the 1950s with the fashion style and sociology of the 1980s. Starring Michael Paré, Diane Lane, Rick Moranis, Amy Madigan, Willem Dafoe, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, E. G. Daily and Bill Paxton, the film follows ex-soldiers Tom Cody (Paré) and McCoy (Madigan) as they embark on a mission to rescue Cody's ex-girlfriend Ellen Aim (Lane), who was kidnapped by Raven Shaddock (Dafoe), the leader of an outlaw motorcycle gang called The Bombers.
