The story scene is set in Sawrey, the village that she loved, and many of the illustration backgrounds were sketches of nearby homes. A lovely story about a cat named Ribby and a dog named Duchess.

He wrote to Edwin Houston of Philadelphia: I am pleased to acknowledge receipt of your favor of the preceding 12 November, enclosing a letter of credit drawn on our city bank for the sum of six hundred twenty-six francs, the balance of my invoice of 27 October last. In anticipation of your forthcoming orders, please be assured of my sincere best wishes. J. Duboscq. Edwin Houston was an American inventor and electrical engineer; he designed an early arc lamp. The letter has a French revenue stamp in the lower left corner and a couple small holes that affect nothing. It is written on graph paper and the ink is dark.

A piece of fabric from the Curtiss NC-4 Flying Boat, which made the first transatlantic flight on May 27, 1919. This relic was produced by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, which restored the aircraft on the 50th Anniversary of the fli. Document measures 13" x 20", fabric sample measures 2" x 2". Held in archival sleeve. Light offsetting where previously framed. The Smithsonian revised its policies after this production and no longer offers pieces of restored relics for public sale. The Curtiss NC-4 flying boat, built by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company for the U.S. Navy during World War I, became the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic Ocean in May 1919. Part of the Navy-Curtiss series of large multi-engine seaplanes designed for long-range flight, the NC-4 had four engines and a wingspan of over 120 feet. Alongside NC-1 and NC-3, it departed from Rockaway, New York, stopping in Newfoundland and the Azores; while the other aircraft were forced to withdraw, NC-4, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Albert C. Read and a crew of five, completed the 3,925-mile journey, landing in Lisbon on May 27, 1919. Though taking 23 days with stops for refueling and repairs, the flight proved the feasibility of transoceanic aviation. The NC-4 is now preserved at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.

From Foreword: During the Civil War years of 1861 - 1865, as millions marched away to answer the Union and Confederate “call to arms,” the demand for photographic likenesses of these valiant soldiers rose to theretofore unknown heights. The then recently introduced Melainotype (1856) or “tintype” or “ferrotype” and its relatively instantaneous processing, together with the physical durability and permanence, made it the favored tool of the itinerant photographers who traveled with the armies in the field. This was particularly true in the North. In the South, ambrotypes, on glass, appear to have been even more popular than tintypes, if we can judge by those extant. Most of these appear to have been taken either pre-Civil War (in state and private militia uniforms) or very early in the War, when everyone was depicted in a fairly nice, to “super fancy” uniform with weapons and accoutrements. These portraits were usually taken by the “Sun Artists” in their permanent studios and were more formal and studied than those taken in the field. Later in the War, photographic materials in the South became scarce and the Confederate soldier’s pay was most uncertain. Hence, the “camp following” tintype operators and sutlers in the Southern Army were almost nonexistent. Carte-de-visites then became popular in the Confederacy.. From the Introduction:

Hinges tender; binding shaken, but remains sound. Laid in are several folded period hand-drawn lace patterns, as well as newspaper clippings and a blank order form. A presentable 1893 printing of this guide to lace-making by the Butterick Publishing Company, founded by Ebenezer Butterick to distribute the first graded sewing patterns. By 1867, it had released its first magazine, Ladies Quarterly of Broadway Fashions, followed by The Metropolitan in 1868. These magazines contained patterns and fashion news. In the spring of 1867, E. Butterick and Co. began publishing Ladies Quarterly of Broadway Fashions. In 1868, the monthly magazine The Metropolitan began publication. Both magazines were aimed at women and served as a means to sell Butterick paper patterns via mail order. In 1873, the two magazines were merged into a single publication, The Delineator. The magazine served as a marketing tool for Butterick patterns and discussed fashion and fabrics, including advice for home sewists.
