Description
1925. BLAKE, William. The Writings of William Blake. Edited in Three Volumes by Geoffrey Keynes. WITH: WILSON, Mona. The Life of William Blake. London: Nonesuch Press, 1925-27. Together four volumes. Quarto, original half vellum, marbled boards, uncut and unopened. $1850.Limited Nonesuch Press edition of Blake's Writings, number 943 of 1575 copies printed on Vidalon handmade paper, the first complete edition of the poet's writings. Together with Mona Wilson's important Life of William Blake, number 376 of 1480 copies. This is the first attempted collection of Blake's prose and the first edition to contain all of his poetry and prose. It includes many previously unpublished and important letters and fragments, and draws on the poet's annotations and manuscripts to present corrected texts of numerous poems. Keynes arranges Blake's writings chronologically, so the reader can clearly see how his mythic system evolved. Contains over 80 plates reproducing Blake's paintings and engravings. Wilson's Life, printed in like format, with an additional 24 tipped-in collotypes, is still considered the standard biography. ""I have always regarded her book as the most important biographical account of Blake to have appeared since the second edition of Gilchrist's Life in 1880"" (Keynes). The Nonesuch Press was founded in 1923 with the intent to make books ""for those among collectors who also use books for reading"" (Ransom, 169). Bentley 2981. Bookplates; owner penciled annotations on rear pastedowns of The Life and Volume I of The Writings.Interiors clean and fine. Spines slightly darkened, as often; a touch of rubbing to corners. A handsome set in near-fine condition.

Description
London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1955. First edition. Fine/Fine. Original publisher's blue cloth gilt in dust jacket. A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Dust jacket just a bit worn at edges, still an excellent copy. Often seen as Greene's great post-war work, The Quiet American follows Thomas Fowler's relationship with idealistic American CIA agent Alden Pyle, one which intrudes on both professional and personal ground. The work drew on Greene's experience as a war correspondent in French Indo-China for The Times and Le Figaro from 1951 to 1954, and the work is dedicated to two friends he made while there (one of which is named after the leading female character). It has since been adapted into two films, one in 1958 and another in 2002 starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser. Fine in Fine dust jacket.

1920. London & Toronto: J.M. Dent & Sons, 1920. Original green cloth stamped in gilt, with dust jacket. First English Trade Edition (issued after the American edition and also after a 40-copy private issue of the English galley proofs). Begun in 1896, and in effect completing the trilogy begun with ALMAYER'S FOLLY and AN OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS, "THE RESCUE was Conrad's albatross, the book which hung about his neck from the beginning of his writing career almost until the end of his life" [Cagle]. This copy is in the standard (primary) binding: the spine lettering is in gilt, and the front cover publisher's device and border are in blind. (There is a secondary binding with black lettering and border, and with no front cover device.) This volume is in fine, bright condition (endpaper signature dated August 9, 1920, two months after publication); the pictorial jacket, which unlike that of THE ROVER does not often turn up in presentable condition, is near-fine -- with very little edge-wear (remarkable since the jacket stands a bit taller than the volume). Description
Sioux City, 1878. Very good.. Broadsheet, 6.25 x 5 inches. Minor soiling, lightly toned. Trimmed unevenly along bottom edge. Broadsheet advertising the land services of Daniel H. Talbot, a speculator and land agent based in Sioux City, Iowa. "Having but recently made a visit to the state, and with the aid of good, reliable men residing in Texas, we can inform you as near as any one can do that which you may expect to find upon a personal investigation...differing from other portions of the South, [Texas] is blessed with healthful, temperate climate, having a population composed in part of enterprising settlers from all portions of the Northern states. Texas, unlike the old Southern states, is progressive, and is rapidly taking her place among the more advanced states of the Union." The verso offers to make advances on veteran homestead claims, paying cash for claims. Talbot was a land speculator who moved to Sioux City in 1870, where he invested heavily in the area and surrounds, though he lost his fortune in the Panic of 1893. Rare and ephemeral -- we locate two copies in OCLC, at Yale and SMU.

Stated first edition. 8 1/4" X 6". xviii, 271pp. Wear to unclipped dust jacket with rubbing and creasing to covers, corners, and edges, with hard bumping to bottom corners. Black cloth over boards with spine lettered in silver. Corners are gently bumped. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is firm and sound. An overall presentable signed first edition of this pioneering work. ABOUT THIS BOOK: This pioneering book introduces a largely unremarked dimension of film, the feminine, which cannot be reduced to womens experience, or to mens projections onto women. The Presence of the Feminine in Film gives body to that often rather loosely formulated Jungian conception, the feminine aspect of psyche, by noticing what feminine turns out to mean in particular cinematic contexts. Spanning seven decadesfrom Pride and Prejudice, Notorious, and Letter from an Unknown Woman to Monsoon Wedding, Brokeback Mountain, and The Lives of Othersthe movies selected for particular study here make it clear that the feminine is at home in the movies, and that when she appears, it is to appeal to our sensibilities as well as to our senses. This is a book that will enhance the appreciation of film as a depth psychological medium.(Publisher).
