Description
1938. First Edition. Signed. SANGER, Margaret. An Autobiography. New York: W.W. Norton, (1938). Octavo, original navy cloth, original dust jacket. $1650.First edition of the autobiography of Margaret Sanger, who spearheaded the movement for contraceptive rights, inscribed: ""To Mr Alan Kramer, my grateful regards & compliments. Margaret Sanger. Sept 7, 1943.""""As the originator of the phrase 'birth control' and its best-known advocate, Margaret Sanger survived Federal indictments, a brief jail term, numerous lawsuits, hundreds of street-corner rallies and raids on her clinics to see much of the world accept her view that family planning is a basic human right."" In 1936 her efforts influenced the reinterpretation of the Comstock law ""to provide for distribution of contraceptive information"" (New York Times). Praised by Pearl Buck as ""one of the most courageous women of our times,"" Sanger vigorously challenged ""old sexual values; she ended her career, heavy with honors, as the respected champion of new ones. Her life spanned a period of striking changes in American attitudes about the family, the role of woman, and sexual standards. All of those changes she helped to catalyze"" (ANB). Sanger founded and served as president of the American Birth Control League, organized the first World Population Conference in Geneva, and was the first president of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. With frontispiece portrait of Sanger. ""First Edition"" stated on copyright page. Book with a few faint spots to cloth and white soiling at spine head. Dust jacket with light soiling, a bit of wear to extremities, and dampstains to verso. An extremely good inscribed copy.

Description
Northridge: Lord John Press, 1985. First edition. Fine. Presentation copy, one of 400 numbered and one hundred deluxe copies. A Fine copy, signed by the author on a leaf before the half title, and by Anne Tyler at the end of the introduction. Bound in black and white marbled boards with black cloth backstrip and gilt title to spine, only the most trivial toning to spine. No slipcase. A photo-essay from the Pulitzer Prize winning author and photographer who took the American South as her muse. Welty honed her photographic skills while working in PR for the Works Progress Administration. The photographs in this volume were all taken between 1930-1941 during the Great Depression, however, these fifty images do not just document the struggles of the working poor, but instead capture the joy of daily life and the humanity of Americans from all walks of life. As novelist Anne Tyler writes in her introduction to the book, the photographs are taken with kindness. Herbert Yellin (1935-2014) established his small fine press in Northridge in 1978 to celebrate his favorite modern authors, from poets to science fiction writers. Lord John Press was committed to producing exquisite editions and this copy is a perfect example of that mission. Fine.
