Very good plus.
Description
Los Angeles: [New World Pictures], 1987. Very good plus.. Original revised second draft for the classic 1989 teen film starring Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, and Penelope Milford. One of the greatest high school movies ever made, and one of the few really worthy Winona Ryder vehicles, HEATHERS not only anticipated the more satirical edge of '90s teen movies to come, it perhaps embodied better than even John Hughes the world-weary pose for which Gen X would become best known. From the great heights of his Edgar-winning first screenplay, Waters later descended to the ignominy of HUDSON HAWK and "a little bit of friction" with Tim Burton - although, as he later noted, there is much to be said for a career in which one has "enough old Batman residual money I can live my own life and write original scripts." Subjected to several recent stage and screen adaptations, the original HEATHERS still cuts like a knife and resists reduction to a period piece: like Shakespeare, Waters wrote not for an age but for all time. Gracious to a fault, the writer neither disdained nor disclaimed the musical or the ill-fated television show based on his iconic work; in fact, he suggested, a "Heathers On Ice" would be nice, too, "and I'm getting an opera vibe." Gen X canon. 11'' x 8.5''. Original brad-bound white printed production wrappers. Title page dated November 17, 1987. 110 leaves printed rectos only. Light toning and touches of soil to wrappers.

Description
New Jersey, 1960. Hardcover. Very Good. Quarto measuring 12" x 12.5". String-tied brown paper boards with "scrapbook" stamped in gilt on the front board. Slight mustiness and edgewear thus very good. A scrapbook kept by New Jersey native, William Saupe, during the 1960s. From the contents it seems Saupe identified as gay and often discusses his love for a man named Frank. The album contains letters, cards, drawings, photographs, and other ephemera from Saupe's life and his relationship with Frank. Many of the pages include transcriptions of letters or captions that explain the included contents. Some of the photos and letters are from when Saupe was serving with the Army in the late 1960s. Saupe often includes drawings of male bodies one of which features a uniformed cartoon man ogling a male chest. The same drawing also features images of anatomically correct male genitalia and sperm with the caption "don't ask what cause I don't know." In the same letter he writes, "I have a very good friend here his name is Bill too and is also gay too." He goes on to explain that this friend went "to the chaplain and yelled queer" and now he's leaving the army. Saupe says that after this he too spoke to the chaplain and his "C.O. called me into his office and asked me if I was gay. And a whole mess of other stuff like that. Now the paper work and more questions to make sure I am. I can't wait til I am home again." Some of the pages feature romantic or humorous flirting cards William often signs as Madame Butterfly, in one letter he mentions he's considering getting a tattoo of a butterfly and asks Frank's opinion. One of these cards has an elephant saying "you don't have to write me but at least dip your snoot in the ink and leave a nose print here." Where it reads "nose" it's been crossed out and replaced with "prick." In another letter he talks about wanting a wedding and asks Frank if he's ever been to a "gay wedding." After his discharge from the army Bill perused an art career in New York. His drawings can be seen throughout his letters to Frank, including images of famous characters such as Batman, as well as his own ideas, many of which were erotic in nature. One flyer featured here advertises an erotic art show at a gallery in New York's Greenwich Village. In some of his letters from this time Bill signs his name as "Bil Bike" and shows an interest in biker leather fashions. An interesting collection of ephemera following a homosexual man in the 1960s.

Turner received his medical degree from the Univ. of Penn. in 1858. He departed for Europe that year to enhance his medical skills while staying in Paris for several months. He practiced medicine in Philadelphia in the post war period until his death in 1877. The printers were a father and son operation that began in 1854. Washington, D.C.: M'Gill & Witherow, 1864. 8pp. Original printed yellow wrappers. A clean and bright text. Disbound, else Very Good. Reverend William Henry Channing, a prominent Unitarian preacher, was President of the Association. The nephew of William Ellery Channing, he was Chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives when his Association issued this Report. The List of Officers and Managers appears on page [2]. Describing the Association's activities, the Report notes that "A considerable amount has been expended in defending the legal rights of freedmen, and in rescuing them from the remorseless grasp of the slave-catchers. Eminent counsel has been employed in a number of cases, and many a trembling fugitive has reason to be thankful to the Society for his deliverance from a worse than Egyptian bondage." The Association's "great work" in the previous year "has been the establishment of free colored schools in different parts of the city." There follows a chronicle of the important events in the establishment of about ten free schools for the Negro children, and their "flourishing condition." Sabin 20314 note. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania, 1941. First edition. 1941 SCARCE LANDMARK CONTROLLED STUDY OF DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR IN BLACK TEENS BY FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN TO EARN A PHD FROM UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA. 9 3/4 inches tall offprint; original grey printed staplebound card wrappers; [2], 18pp. Near Fine. Reprinted from the Journal of Negro Education, April, 1941. Dissertation presented to the faculty of the graduate school of University of Pennsylvania in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Prominent psychologist's first independently published piece, earning him the first PhD awarded to an African American from the University of Pennsylvania. FREDERICK PAYNE WATTS (1904-2007) was one of five biracial children, three of whom went on to be a physician, a dentist and of course a psychologist. Watts was educated in the Washington, D.C. public school system. Upon graduating from Dunbar High School in 1922, he attended Howard University, graduating in 1926 with a BA in psychology and French, and with a teaching fellowship, which allowed him to complete his master's degree. After teaching for a year at Kittrell College in North Carolina, he returned to Washington, D.C. to accept a faculty position at Howard. While at Howard Watts independently researched and wrote A Comparative and clinical Study of Delinquent and Non-Delinquent Negro Boys. Watts worked with 92 boys in the Industrial Home School for Colored Children in the District of Columbia and 91 boys from the school they went to before being sent to the Industrial Home. Holding age (all participants were between 14 and 16) and IQ (average of 77) constant, the boys were tested to determine "whether there are: (1) differences in competency to respond to concrete situations as measured by standardized tests; (2) differences in emotional stability and tendencies toward problem behavior as measured by personality tests; (3) differences in social maturity as measured by a social maturity scale; (4) relationships among the various tests administered, and (5) differences as determined through a questionnaire." Watts concluded that when general intelligence and age remain constant, there is no significant difference between delinquent and non-delinquent boys in their competency to respond to concrete situations. He also did not find any notable differences within their tendencies towards problem behavior, emotional stability, and social maturity. He accused oppositional findings of other studies to inadequate control. Watts argues that it is impossible to differentiate between delinquent and non-delinquent Negro boys. He did however find that there were differences in interests, habits, and other general attitudes. Lastly, he noted that the delinquent boys had less parental or adult controls in their lives. Indicating that "further investigation in regard to parental or home control of the groups might lead to establishing useful and significant differences between delinquent and non-delinquent Negro boys. Watts remained at Howard until 1942, one year after he earned a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1941. According to the school's officials, he was the first African American to earn a PhD from the university and fourth in the nation to earn a PhD in psychology.

Description
New York: Putnam, 2022. First edition. Hardcover. New/new. 334pp. Octavo [23.5cm]. Black boards with title stamped in copper on spine. "A man wakes up in an unknown landscape, injured and alone. He used to live in a place called California, but how did he wind up here with a head wound and a bottle of pills in his pocket? He navigates his surroundings, one rough shape at a time. Here lies a pipe, there a reed that could be carved into a weapon, beyond a city he once lived in. He could swear his daughter’s name began with a J, but what was it, exactly? Then he encounters an old man, a crow, and a boy—and realizes that nothing is what he thought it was, neither the present nor the past. He can’t even recall the features of his own face, and wonders: who am I?

Description
Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2015. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 6x1x9. A very nice copy. 2015 Trade Paperback. 410 pp. "On August 20, 1940, Marxist philosopher, politician, and revolutionary Leon Trotsky was attacked with an ice axe in his home in Coyoacan, Mexico. He died the next day. In The Great Prince Died, Bernard Wolfe offers his lyrical, fictionalized account of Trotsky's assassination as witnessed through the eyes of an array of characters: the young American student helping to translate the exiled Trotsky's work (and to guard him), the Mexican police chief, a Rumanian revolutionary, the assassin and his handlers, a poor Mexican "peon," and Trotsky himself. Drawing on his own experiences working as the exiled Trotsky's secretary and bodyguard and mixing in digressions on Mexican culture, Stalinist tactics, and Bolshevik history, Wolfe interweaves fantasy and fact, delusion and journalistic reporting to create one of the great political novels of the past century."--rear wrapper
