Description
1921. HAY, Ian (pseudonym of BEITH, John Hay). The Writings. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1921. Ten volumes. Octavo, publisher's three-quarter black pebbled morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt. $1200.""Argyll Edition"" of the writings of ""Ian Hay,"" the pseudonym of John Hay Beith, signed by Beith on a tipped-in leaf in Volume I, with color frontispiece in each volume and a photographic portrait of the author, attractively bound.""Beith's first novel, Pip (1907), colored by early Manchester schooldays, was a bestseller and was followed by other equally light comic novels, among them The Right Stuff (1908) and A Man's Man (1909). With the publication in 1914 of A Knight on Wheels and The Lighter Side of School Life… his career as a writer was assured. His humor, gift for story-telling, shrewd observation, sentimentality, and truly 'English' talent for sympathetically conveying eccentric characters perfectly suited the age. In the First World War Beith served first with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, then transferred to the machine-gun corps… his best-known book, The First Hundred Thousand, was published in 1915. Written in billets at home and in France, it 'impressed upon a notoriously unmilitarist public the lighter side of Kitchener's army' (The Times). First serialized in Blackwood's Magazine, it became one of the most popular books of the period… Beith followed this success with Carrying On (1917) and The Last Million (1918)"" (ODNB). All of these works are present in this set. After 1919, Beith turned to the theatre, where he found success adapting his novels to the stage and collaborating with contemporaries such as P.G. Wodehouse and Seymour Hicks; those writings are not present in this set, which is complete as issued. Spine gently mellowed. An attractive signed set in fine condition.

Description
1921-49. 33 pages. H. Lipscomb Miller - Analytical and Consulting Chemist of Tampa, Florida occupied an interesting area of commerce at the beginning of the 1920's and into the 1950's as both a chemist selling formulas and a possible huckster promoting sales opportunities in publications. These letters from a vast array of commercial entities portrays the reach this establishment had. Advertising in Popular Mechanic, Spatula, and other trade magazines, Miller shows the methods used before TV to reach a broad audience. The Letterheads from these following businesses give an example of what is included here: Green Valley Medicine Co. out of Millerstown, PA was looking for someone to help figure out some formulas left to him when his partner left the firm. A repurposed letter using the back of a Ford Dealer stationary came from Havana, Cuba, marketing a shoe polish formula that would work to seal car tires. Another letter from Sydney, Australia was in need of a formula for glazing pottery. From Charleston, West Virginia we find a former Russian trader looking for help to start a similar business. Other letters come from Chattanooga,Tennessee, Muskegon/Michigan, Pomeroy/Pennsylvania, Berkeley/California, Knoxville/Tennessee.

With Chistian love, from the Author India. Nov. 15, 1917." Dr. Philo Melvin Buck, who died in 1924 at age 78, was a long-time missionary leader in India under the Board of Foreign Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He died in Meerut, India. He entered the Indian missionary field in 1870, when there were only 200 Christians in the territory. For twenty-nine years, from 1893 to 1922, when he retired, he was superintendent of the Meerut district, which today has more than 35,000 Christians. T.J. Scott was an author and missionary to India in the 19th century, also associated with the United Methodist Church's Board of Foreign Missions. Scott's missionary activities were part of a broader 19th century evangelical movement in India, where Protestant missionaries worked in education, translation, and community outreach. 12mo., decorative light-brown cloth, stamped in black; 248 pages. Frontispiece of the Author. Very Good (covers nice; contents clean & tight with some browning endpapers).
