Description
New York: Wittenborn and Co, 1970. First American Edition. Near Fine Fine/Near Fine. First edition, first printing, American issue, published simultaneously in Germany and America. Signed by Hilla Becher on the title page. Near Fine with light splaying to the boards and light toning to contents. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with light toning, rubbing and several short closed tears to edges. The first monograph of the Bechers and often considered their magnum opus. Minimal and clean in design, the viewer is quietly immersed into the couple's distinctively stark style. "In this book we show objects predominantly instrumental in character, whose shapes are the result of calculation and whose processes of development are optically evident. They are generally buildings where anonymity is accepted to be the style. Their peculiarities originate not in spite of, but because of the lack of design." Roth 101, p. 194.

Description
Brno: Vydalo Druzstvo Moravsky Legionar, 1926. First Edition. Very Good. First edition, first printing of an autobiographical travel account of a 1919 journey from Vladivostok to Prague. [vi], 155, [5] pp. with several black and white photographic illustrations and a folding map of Eurasia at rear. Loose sheets laid into printed wraps, as issued. Wraps are illustrated by Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova, widely recognized as the first female graphic novelist. Very Good with slight lean to binding, slight fading and creasing to spine with light rubbing, soiling and wear to wraps. An uncommon work between two artistic luminaries, both members of the Moravian Writers' Circle. Their association would continue as Zemek would sit for a series of graphite portraits by Helena in the '30s. WorldCat indicates a mere four institutional holdings.

Fiyorda [Furth]: Hayim Ben Tzevi Hirsh, 1768. Second edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. Square octavo. 54 leaves. Rebound in modern brown cloth over marbled paper boards, decorated with gilt. Decorative woodcut border on the title page. The scarce second edition of Rabbi Aaron ben Mordecai of Rödelheim's (born ca.1695) Yiddish translation of the two known Targumim of the biblical book of Esther. The first of the Aramaic Targumim (Aramaic Translations or paraphrases of the books of the bible) is more common and well known, while the second targum is noted for its embellishments on the Biblical account, with considerable additional apocryphal material, not always evidently related to the Esther story. The Yiddish text here is printed throughout in the traditional Vaybertaytsh script. This is the Rabbi Aharon's most notable work, and the first addition was originally published in 1718 in Frankfurt. Binding with light rubbing to extremities. Back board lightly bumped along the side edge. Interior with some chipping/fraying to the edges of the first two leaves resulting in some minimal loss of text. Pages throughout with some sporadic soling or dampstaining. Some chipping and fraying to the final leaf as well. Binding in very good, interior in good+ condition overall. Quite scarce. Description
1866. First Edition. (BLACK HISTORY) WASHBURNE, E[lihu]. B. Memphis Riots and Massacres. 30th Congress, 1st Session. House of Representatives. Report No. 101. (Washington, D. C.: Government Printing Office, 1866). Octavo, contemporary pebbled brown cloth rebacked with original spine laid down; pp. (1), 2-394. $1600.First edition of the July 1866 congressional Report of the House Select Committee containing hundreds of pages of official testimony and eyewitness accounts of the brutal May 1866 Memphis Massacre that killed over 45 Black men, women and children, and destroyed hundreds of Black homes and churches, sending ""the unmistakable message that the North may have won the war, but it did not win the hearts and minds of the white ruling class that clung to white supremacy.""The 1866 Memphis massacre was ignited by a quarrel between a white man and a Black man. ""A group of recently discharged Black veterans intervened, and a white crowd began to gather"" (Foner, Black Reconstruction, 262). Eyewitnesses reported that as the dispute escalated, a white Memphis policeman told some of the Black men, ""'Your old father, Abe Lincoln, is dead and damned.' This phrase, reported more than once by those who later testified to the House Select Committee, sums up the attitude of many of those who perpetrated the Massacre."" One man, who was shot but survived, testified that he saw white men drag a Black man out of a house and shoot him ""'right in his mouth.' Another man then 'kicked him over, and shot him again.' Said he, 'God damn you, you will never be free again.' The violence of the first three days of May 1866… sent the unmistakable message that the North may have won the war, but it did not win the hearts and minds of the white ruling class that clung to white supremacy and Black inferiority. White southerners refused to abandon their 'property interest' in Black lives… If 'war is politics continued by other means,'"" then the violence in Memphis ""could be understood as the Civil War continued by other means"" (Donald, When the Rule of Law Breaks Down, 1631-39). Before the violence subsided in Memphis, ""one of the bloodiest outbreaks in this violent era,… at least 48 persons (all but two of them Black) lay dead, five Black women had been raped, and hundreds of Black dwellings, churches and schools were pillaged or destroyed"" (Foner, 262).An investigator reported: ""'women and children were shot in bed.' An African American woman… 'was shot and then thrown into the flames of a burning house and consumed'… in some instances houses were [set ablaze] and armed men guarded them to prevent the escape of those inside… In the aftermath, no arrests or attempts at prosecution were made. Federal civil-rights enforcement was lacking and… Memphis Mayor Park washed his hands of the matter"" (Schermerhorn, ""Civil-Rights Laws,"" Atlantic). That July the House of Representatives Select Committee issued this Report. Herein, refusing to call the three days in Memphis a ""riot,"" it declares the violence a ""massacre… the mob, finding itself under the protection and guidance of official authority… [was] actuated by feelings of the most deadly hatred to the colored race."" Nevertheless, there were still ""no arrests, no trials and no convictions."" To historian Calvin Schermerhorn, the violence of those days in 1866 continues to have ""a powerful legacy… the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr. was shot, sits only a few blocks from the site of the Memphis Massacre of 1866"" (Atlantic). First edition: House of Representatives Report No. 101: ""July 25, 1866—Ordered to be printed."" First text leaf with small marginal notation, ""x 16521."" 1874 library bookplate.Interior very fresh with minor expert repairs to rear blanks, both pastedowns and front inner hinge. An excellent copy of a very scarce book.

A VERY RARE BODONI OFFPRINT Large 4to (286x207 mm). [4], 35, [1 blank] pp. Frontispiece with a portrait of Livia Doria Carafa engraved by Raffaello Morghen after a design by Fedele Fischetti. Fine engraved initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary mottled half calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt foliate tools, gilt title on a red morocco lettering piece, panels covered with marbled paper, red edges (some losses to the headcaps, slightly worn and rubbed). Some occasional very light foxing. A very good copy printed on strong paper. A separate edition of the Elogio storico written by Bertola de' Giorgi as an introduction to the collection Prose e versi per onorare la memoria di Livia Doria Caraffa. This work was printed in 1784 by Giambattista Bodoni at the behest of the Neapolitan prince Vincenzo Carafa della Roccella (1739-1814), in honour of his late wife, Livia Carafa Doria del Carretto (1745-1779). For the offprint publication of the Elogio, Bodoni inserted a preliminary two-leaf quire, including a new title page and a short address to the readers by Bertola de' Giorgi. As in the collection Prose e versi of 1784, the frontispiece features a portrait of Livia Carafa designed by Fedele Fischetti (1732-1792) and engraved by Raffaello Morghen (1758-1833). The separate edition bears no printing date, but it may have been issued in 1785, coinciding with Bertola de' Giorgi's stay in Parma. To date, we have identified only one copy of the Elogio on the market. This copy once belonged to Hugh Cecil Brooks -author of the well-known Compendiosa bibliografia di edizioni bodoniane (1927)- and was sold at the auction of his collection of Bodoni books. Bertola de' Giorgi was born in Rimini into a noble family. At 16 he entered the Siena monastery of Monte Oliveto, but a few years later we find him fighting in Hungary against the Turks. His early life was quite an adventurous one until the age of 24, when in 1776 he began teaching. He taught first in Naples and later universal history in Pavia, whose university at the time was one of the most celebrated in Italy: Volta, Spallanzani, and Scarpa, among many others, hold a chair there (E. Bigi, Bertola de' Giorgi, Aurelio, in: "Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani", vol. 9, 1967, s.v.). De Lama, II, pp. 30-31; Brooks, 252; A. Description
Six issues, 16-24 pp. each, comprising a complete run of the illustrated French-language serial, as issued by the publishers in 1982. Folio. 27 x 39 cm. Very good. Illus. stiff wraps reproducing the graphic art from issue 1. Small marginal tear to front wrapper. [1857] A French feminist newspaper published by the Mouvement de Libération des Femmes ("Movement for the Liberation of Women," known colloquially as the MLF) between 1971 and 1973, amongst whom Marie Dedieu, Juliette Kahane, Marielle Burkhalter, Nadja Ringart, and Sylvina Boissonnas featured prominently. The cover of each issue offered a joke about its slightly unpredictable publication schedule, adverrtising itself as a "menstruel" (i.e., "menstrual") instead of a "mensuel" magazine, which means "appearing monthly." From the rear cover: "LeTorchon Brûle gave expression to younger members of the [French feminist] Movement, by letting their rage, humor, and moods explode onto the page : upset, disputation, spontaneity, love and hate, impulsiveness, abundance, diversity, contradictions. It gave voice to revolution at the surface level through contested realities, discourse, reactions, and also to the deeper revolutions of memories, and of bodies, whose first beginnings stirred in October 1968 and continue today, as adults, both in their maturations and the revolutions in the Mouvement de Libération des Femmes." Scarce complete.

Valletta, Malta: Museums Dept, 1976. Bannerman, David A. (1886-1979). (1) Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent. 4pp. on 2 sheets. N.p., n.d. [ca. 1976]. 211 x 148 mm. Small ink smear on last page. Laid into: (2) Bannerman and Joseph A. Vella-Gaffiero. Birds of the Maltese archipelago. Foreword by Dom Mintoff. xix, [3], 550pp. 22 plates, folding map, text illustrations. Valletta [Malta]: Museums Department, 1976. 230 x 155 mm. Original cloth, dust-jacket (slightly worn and soiled). Together 2 items. Very good to fine. An excellent letter from the noted British ornithologist, author of numerous definitive works on the birds of Europe, Africa and the Atlantic islands. The letter is laid into the above-listed First Edition copy of Bannerman's Birds of the Maltese Archipelago, a work that contains the first full description of the hundreds of different species of birds recorded in the Maltese islands and stresses the crucial role the Maltese archipelago plays in bird migration between Europe and Africa. Bannerman's letter bears no salutation but is complete, as the second leaf is numbered "2"; it was undoubtedly written to the recipient of this copy. The letter contains intriguing details about the book's publication and reception: "You may be interested in the photograph inside the cover of this volume [not present], which was sent to me by Francis Mallia, Director of Malta's museums. It shows Dom Mintoff [Prime Minister of Malta] reading the inscription which I wrote when he was presented with a copy of my book . . . "The foreword by Mintoff (the first he has ever written I am told) may also interest you. As a Vice-President of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (England), I had stressed in these pages the importance of more government protection for the migratory birds which pass through Malta en route to Africa to winter and receive abominable treatment at the hands of ignorant Maltese farmers. Mintoff has expressed his views-and my opinion-very forcefully in his foreword. This book which I was invited to write by some resident members of the Malta Ornithological Society for which they had raised a substantial sum to pay for the publication, among themselves, was finally take over as an official Museums Dept. publication & the entire cost of publication authorized by Dr. Cossar & Mintoff on behalf of Government . . . "The Secretary of the M.O.S. opposed the publication as he was secretly writing a book himself which he never divulged to me & which you all have. It's quite good in its way, but the jealousy displayed by the authors Saltana [sic] & Co. did them no credit. They even got a member to raise in their parliament why a "foreigner" (!) had been permitted to write a book on Malta's birds . . ." Dom Mintoff (1916-2012) was Prime Minister of Malta from 1971 to 1984. "Saltana" refers to Maltese ornithologist Joe Sultana (1939-2018), author of Guide to the Birds of Malta (1975). .

[COE, Jesse]
Seller
Lorne Bair Rare Books (United States)
Description
Indianapolis, IN: N.P., 1906. Original lithographed wanted poster, with text and photographic portrait printed in black on recto only; measures 10.75" x 7". Thin strip of paper reinforcement along top edge verso, a few faint folds and small tears; brief penciled notation to left of portrait; Very Good, clean example, without loss. A reward bulletin issued by the Indianapolis, IN Chief of Police, Robert Metzger, for gunman Jesse Coe (alias Cole). About 8pm on the night of September 30, 1906, Coe shot officer Charles J. Russell at close range in a neighborhood near 24th Street and Indianapolis Avenue; he was later taken to an Indianapolis hospital, where he died of his wound. Russell's partner, Edward J. Petticord, chased after the alleged gunman (Coe), and was shot in the back by another suspect. Petticord died two days later, and the man accused of killing Petticord was arrested, convicted, and hanged at the Indiana State Prison in February, 1907. Law enforcement officials launched a nationwide manhunt for Coe, who was believed to have left Indianapolis by train, disguised as a laborer. Two years after the shooting, Coe's cousin led authorities to him while he was squirrel hunting in Kentucky; when approached by authorities, Coe was shot dead after pointing his rifle at them. The broadside is rare, with no example held by any OCLC member institution. A presumably later example is held by Kent State, offering a higher reward of $1500 for Coe. Of particular interest on the present example is the penciled notation to the left of Coe's portrait, stating "Capd. Shot - 11/13/06," clearly giving a date that is much earlier than the documented capture and shooting of Coe two years later. A rare ephemeral survival from a high-profile killing of a police officer by an African American.

Description
Bloomington, IN: Indiana University Press, 1968. Hardcover. Good +/Good. Hardcover. 9 1/2" X 6 1/2". xi, 251pp. This book is from the collection of Anders Ericsson, renowned Swedish Psychologist. Toning, creasing, and shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of price-clipped dust jacket. There are several open and closed tears along the edges of jacket. Some are tape repaired. Toning, creasing, and chipping to jacket spine. Multiple tears to inside flaps. Toning to jacket interior. Bound in maroon cloth over boards with spine lettered in gilt. Mild rubbing to corners of boards. Gentle bumps to head and tail of spine. Dust-spotting to text block. Few instances of upper page creasing due to earmarking. A few instances of inked underlining and marks to margins of pages. Underlining does not obscure text. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Wilshire argues that James, while not explicitly a phenomenologist, developed insights that foreshadowed the method and concerns of phenomenology, particularly concerning the nature of thought and its relation to the world. Wilshire contends that James's work in psychology, especially his "Principles of Psychology," reveals a move from a semi-behaviorist approach to a more phenomenological understanding of experience. Wilshire's argument focuses on how James's initial attempt to correlate thoughts with brain states led him to recognize the importance of understanding the nature of thoughts themselves, which in turn pushed him towards a phenomenological analysis of thought's intentionality. James realized that thought cannot be understood in isolation from its object and that experience is structured by and for consciousness. This realization, Wilshire argues, challenged the mind-body dualism that James initially embraced and laid the groundwork for a more intentional, worldly understanding of thought. Wilshire suggests that James's work anticipates key aspects of phenomenology, such as the primacy of perception, the intentional unity of experience, and the importance of understanding consciousness in terms of its lived experience. While James's work was not explicitly phenomenological, Wilshire argues that it provides a valuable historical link to the development of the phenomenological method. (Publisher).

Description
Moscow: Pravda, 1951. Softcover. First edition; 5 1/2 x 8 1/2; pp. 24; stapled printed wraps; minor wear to spine tips and corners; near fine. Vsesoiuznoe Obshchestvo po Rasprostraneniiu Politicheskikh i Nauchnykh Znanii (The All-Union Society for the Dissemination of Political and Scientific Knowledge) replaced the League of Militant Atheists, also called The Union of the Godless, in 1947. The League had been formed in 1925, by the Communist Party, as an atheistic and anti-religious organization of common workers and intelligentsia. In 1947 the Society commenced publishing journals and propaganda materials and it sponsored lectures, demonstrations and parades. Dedicated to eradicating religious beliefs and promoting science and knowledge, the public lectures were diligently recorded and printed (example of which is the current one) in a pamphlet form occasionally with numerous illustrations. The topics covered medicine, scientific discoveries, Communist leaders’ works and speeches, history, notable names, anti-Imperialist propaganda, etc. In 1963 the organization was yet again renamed to ‘Znanie’ (Knowledge) and it is still in existence today. Sanitarium treatments in the Soviet Union.
