Description
Leipzig: Friedrich August Leo, 1799. Hardcover. Very Good. Small 4to (140 x 106mm). [iv], 91pp. 29 finely hand-colored engraved plates fully captioned depicting costume and peoples of the world. Period boards backed in cloth; (some light outer wear, early ownership signature in ink on top edge of front free-endpaper and title page, light, marginal thumbsoiling of plates; else contents are clean; very good). Children’s book of Continental costumes printed in Leipzig at the turn of the 19th century. A rare illustrated work first published in 1796, plentiful in delicately hand-colored engravings of native peoples from around the world. This, the second part, was probably written solely by Karl Seidel, a teacher at the Tochterschule (Public Girls School) in Dessau. This “Gallery of People” was designed as a picture book for young children, not yet in their early childhood, to expand their knowledge and satisfy their curiosity about faraway lands. The first part (not included here), included nations, professions and items that were sorted in alphabetical order from Abbess, Admiral, Amazon and Armenians to Dwarf, Gypsy and Wizard. The lives portrayed are wide ranging and include simpletons, butchers, slaves, gardeners and fools. This second part organizes the peoples (usually a man, woman and native, all with appropriate props) by continents: Asians, Africans, Americans and Indians, and Europeans. The illustrations for Native American peoples are of high interest, not only for their expert work, but for the range of tribes and geography, even the Acadian peoples of Canada are represented. This type of book departs from the common ABC books as the pictures and text have a social studies meaning. Rarely found, only two copies located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at Princeton’s Cotsen Library.

Description
New York: Random House, 1957. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First printing, octavo size, 352 pp. Isak Dinesen (nom de plume, Baroness Karen Christenze von Blixen-Finecke of Rungstedlund, nee Dinesen, 1885-1962) is likely best-remembered today for "Out of Africa", a fictionalized recounting of the life she led with her husband operating a coffee plantation, and for her short story, "Babette's Feast", both of which were adapted into Academy Award-winning films. This collection includes stories written as early as the 1930s. While several of the stories garnered critical acclaim, the work as a whole was described by "Time" magazine as "a group of Gothic fiction" (n.b., per Wiki). The publisher, on the dust jacket flap, describes it as one in which Dinesen "again casts her magical spell in prose and...offers twelve tales in which fantasy and reality are harmoniously intermingled." ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full grey cloth over boards, gilt lettering stamped onto the front board and spine, black decoration and publisher's device on the spine, top edge stained red; octavo size (8 3/8" by 5 1/8"), pagination: [i-vi] [1-3] 4-341, [4 blank pp.] [346, author bio]. The dust jacket carries the original price of $4.00, design on front panel and spine of a tree in black and grey upon a red ground with red and white lettering, listing of the tales with short summaries on both flaps, back panel with author bio. ___CONDITION: Near fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some very light sunning to the board edges, front hinge slightly tender (but not cracked), rear hinge strong. The unclipped dust jacket also near fine, entire, with only minor overall edgewear (a bit more noticeable at the head and tail of the spine), spine very lightly sunned. Overall a near fine to fine example. ___CITATION: First edition, first printing per Zempel with "First Printing" stated on the copyright page. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
First edition, 1958, of the sequel to "The Lonely Doll" printed the year before and second in the series. An unusual take on girlhood; even with "modern" sensibilities well-advanced from the 1950s when Dare created the characters and story of Edith and her Teddy Bears, some now perhaps regard it as "edgy". Photographed on Okracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A very nice copy in price-clipped pictorial dustjacket front and back that replicates the photograph on the covers of the book. With a charming bookplate for a young girl on the front pastedown.
