Good plus.
Description
Moscow, Tx, 1888. Good plus.. [23],331pp. Folio. Contemporary vellum boards. Front board coming detached from foot; loss from foot of spine; moderate wear to corners and edges. Final leaf detached, otherwise minimal internal wear. A detailed and long-running record of minutes for the Henderson Yoakum chapter of Freemasons, which covers well over thirty years of the group's history. This chapter was located in the small east Texas town of Moscow, south of Lufkin, whose population was 228 in 1880 according to the census. These entries document the formation of the chapter, record votes on members (with a count of white and black balls cast), bylaws, design of a chapter seal, announcements of deaths of members, foundation of a Masonic school in town, and much other chapter business. The book also includes proceedings of trials against members, including one on May 27, 1860, at which, "It was decided that accused was guilty of gross unmasonic conduct by 6 b[lac]k ball to three white." The entries are interrupted after the meeting on October 20, 1860, at which a committee was appointed, "To report on the propriety of withdrawing or seceding from the Grand Chapter of the United States." On August 19, 1865, after the close of the Civil War, the entries resume. An alphabetical index of subjects occupies the initial leaves. The namesake of the masonic chapter, Henderson King Yoakum, was a soldier, politician, and author, whose 1855 History of Texas was described by John Jenkins as, "The first scholarly history of Texas written after annexation." He was a close friend of Sam Houston, and a founding member of the chapter that adopted his named. Laid into this record book is a carbon copy of a letter to the son of Texas Governor William P. Hobby, remarking that his grandfather, Edwin Hobby, was a member of the Henderson Yoakum chapter, as well as three additional pieces of later Texas masonic ephemera. Also notable is the bookseller's label on the front pastedown, denoting that the blank book used to record these minutes was obtained from Henry Hinck, Bookseller & Stationer, Galveston, Tx. A fine document of masonic participation in rural Texas in the second half of the 19th century.

Description
Guam, 1945. Very good.. Ninety-five black-and-white silver gelatin photographs, each 4 x 5 inches, over seventy with printed or manuscript captions in the margin or verso, eighteen captioned in the negative. Minor overall wear, slight fading to a few images, all removed from photo album, with paper remnants on verso, about ten images with slight corner loss or creases. A collection of original photographs showing Guam, local Chamorro people, and the Northern Mariana Islands in 1945. The images were likely taken by photographers serving in the American armed forces. Twenty-three photographs show villages and the environs of Guam. These include Merizo and environs (a farm, highway, and beach); Inarajan (St. Joseph’s Church and “native houses”); Umatac (a thatch house and Lamira Root Fountain, dedicated in 1933 and built by the principal of Umatac School, F. Q. Sanchez, alongside others); Agat and Asan, villages that were rebuilt with aid from the U.S. military, and a photograph of the sign for Agat School; a waterfall near Agana, the capital of Guam; and Talofofo Bay. Most notably, over forty photographs capture portraits of Chamorro people, including women in "hula costume," schoolchildren, families, a pair of siblings enjoying coconuts, and more, several of whom are identified in the captions ("Lourdes S. Torres," "Florence Flores -- 15 yrs," "Maria Garrido & brother," and others). Other photographs show scenes of children drawing water, women doing laundry, and locals swimming and bathing. Almost twenty photographs, captioned and dated in negative in May 1945, show the coastline and harbors of the Northern Mariana Islands, including Alamagan, the Maug Islands, Pagan, and Sarigan. One photo shows a native bird with webbed feet on the Maug Islands. Overall, an interesting and research-worthy collection of photographs showing Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands during the last months of World War II, with notable portraits of indigenous people.

Description
London: H.K. Lewis, 1894. FIRST EDITION. Original cloth, German library stamp on half- title and title. An excellent, bright copy. First edition, printed in London. This is Osler’s second neurological work, dedicated to his friend W.R. Gowers. He here provides an encyclopaedic view of chorea bolstered by his understanding and clinical experience with the varieties of involuntary movement. He played a considerable role in the development of child neurology through this monograph. Of special interest is the appendix containing an analysis of seventy-three fatal cases of chorea minors. Osler (1849-1919) was a clinician, pathologist, and historian of medicine. His warm and charming personality, his great skill as a physician, his innovative structuring of the medical school curriculum, and his many significant writings have made him the most important figure of his time in both English and North American medicine.

Description
[San Francisco]: [Grabhorn Press], 1941. Limited Edition. Folio in a case. Near fine. One of 200 copies, folio size, with fifteen original leaves. The inimitable Grabhorn Press, a San-Francisco based print shop run by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn that produced a plethora of fine press editions, often about California history, produced this portfolio of pages from books published by the Press from the years 1928 to 1940. Per Heller & Magee, "the number of leaves included varied according to the whim of the donor, usually fifteen", as is the case with this collection. In typically humorous Grabhorn style, the front label announces "A Grab[horn] Bag, Original Pages, Found by excavators at 642 Commercial Street, San Francisco." Several books represented herein were featured in the Grabhorn exhibition at the American Institute of Graphic Arts in New York City. ___DESCRIPTION: Portfolio with quarter white cloth and marbled paper boards, green paper label with green ruled borders and lettering, facsimile of San Francisco view on the front paste-down endpaper, green folio with three folds on the rear paste-down endpaper, fifteen original leaves from books printed at the Grabhorn Press, plus a "title page" consisting of one sheet folded once to make four pages with a note from the Grabhorns printed in red and black; Original Old Style Italic type, French handmade paper, the portfolio is folio size (12 1/4" by 8 3/4"), one of 200 copies, unnumbered. ___CONDITION: Near fine, with clean boards, straight corners, the leaves are clean and bright with only original folds, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some toning and light creases to the green folds holding the leaves, else fine. ___CITATION: Grabhorn Press bibliography, no. 350. ___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. (title, text, notes), 67, [1] (blank) pp. Wrappers slightly worn and browned; red pencil shading to several letters. First Edition. Rufer (E), pp. 69-70. GA B/24/2, pp. 34-35 "Schönberg exercised great care in choosing the text; he wanted to compose something on a text by Lord Byron, for the poet's support of Greece's struggle for independence mirrored Schönberg's allegiances to the Europe struggling against Hitler. Of his decision to compose the piece, Schönberg wrote: "I knew it was the moral duty of intelligentsia to take a stand against tyranny." He combined the "Marseillaise" and the motive from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony at the moment when the speaker declaims, 'the earthquake voice of victory." In a letter of 8 September 1943 to his former pupil Heinrich Jalowetz, who had prepared the piece for a recording with a singer, Schönberg insisted that the singer must have "the number of shades, essential to express one hundred and seventy kinds of derision, sarcasm, hatred, ridicule, contempt, condemnation, etc., which I tried to portray in my music.'"
