Description
Chicago, Illinois: Alpha Kappa Alpha Office, 1966. Good. 11” x 8½”. Stapled pictorial wrappers. Pp. 80. Good due to wrappers split at both staples, moderately soiled and chipped; internally very good with light staining to edges of a few pages. This is a rare book of sheet music that includes the national hymns and ceremonial music, along with songs written by members of the first historically African American intercollegiate sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA). was founded in 1908 at Howard University and became the first Black sorority to nationally incorporate in 1913. They have sponsored countless programs to aid in African American education, healthcare, job training and political affairs, and have been honored with official Congress legislation as well as their own inspired Barbie doll. AKA exists today as part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, which they helped form at Howard in 1930. This book, which cited the efforts of AKA president Julia Brogdon Purnell and National Music Committee chairwoman Geraldine Ophelia Banks Mosley, contains not only the national hymns of AKA and other Black fraternities and sororities, but also “songs for special days, regional, chapter, devotional, action, and pep songs.” The book lists the members of AKA's National Music Committee for 1964 (including their hometowns and chapters), and holds the musical notation and lyrics for 34 songs, plus the “Words Only” for 79 more. The tunes are organized alphabetically in four sections: there are nine “National Hymns” of African American sororities and fraternities, and 24 with “Original Words and Music by Sorors,” including several chapter songs as well as hymns adapted nationally for Founders Day and a memorial service. One section is wholly devoted to ivy, the AKA official symbol, with the words and arrangement to the “Ivy Hymn” plus lyrics to eight songs written by Beta Gamma chapter's Ivy Leaf Club. The remaining 71 songs (available in the book as lyrics only) include odes to the sorority and its directors, pep songs and titles such as “Girl of My Dreams,” “Jolly AKAs” and “AKA We'll Always Honor Thee.” Nearly every piece lists its composer and/or lyricist, and several notations' lyrics are printed in a handwritten font. A fantastic book of musical notation and lyrics from the first African American intercollegiate sorority. No holdings were located in OCLC.

Description
Tintype photograph of an African American woman, 19th century, documenting personal portraiture and self-presentation in the decades following emancipation, with direct relevance to the study of Black identity, social mobility, and visual culture in Reconstruction-era America. The sitter is shown in formal Victorian dress, wearing a full white gown and hat, with hands clasped in her lap, adopting a composed and deliberate pose consistent with studio portrait conventions of the period. Such images formed part of a broader practice in which African Americans used photography to assert dignity, stability, and participation in social norms that had been denied under slavery, creating visual records of family, status, and self-definition during a period of transition and reconstitution of community life. Tintype photograph measuring approximately 2.5 x 3.5 inches, produced using a photographic process introduced in the mid-nineteenth century in which images were created on thin metal sheets coated with dark lacquer. The portrait presents the subject seated against a neutral backdrop, her attire and posture carefully arranged to emphasize refinement and composure, with the details of her dress and hat clearly visible above the folds of her skirt. Corners clipped, with tissue paper attached to the verso and a small chip not affecting the image; overall very good condition. A clear and well-preserved example of nineteenth-century African American portrait photography, reflecting the use of the medium in documenting personal identity and social presence after emancipation.

Description
Seattle, Wa, 1970. Good plus.. 100pp. Quarto. Original pictorial green wrappers printed in black, stapled. Moderate staining, soiling, and edge wear, corners a bit chewed, a few stray ink notations on wrappers. Some staining to margins of text, occasional foxing. An unrecorded souvenir program for the national convention of the National United Church Ushers Association of America (NUCUAA), held in Seattle between July 26 and 31, 1970. The NUCUAA was formed in 1910 by uniting several usher groups in five eastern states and spread across the country over the ensuing decades. The present work provides a short history of the organization and its founder, welcome messages from various prominent state officials in Washington, several pages with a detailed schedule of events for the convention, dozens of pages containing well wishes and greetings from various sectional usher boards and individuals, and several pages of commercial advertisements for local Pacific Northwest businesses sympathetic to the African American community in and around Seattle. The text concludes with four pages of lists of the ushers from nearby churches in Seattle, Tacoma, and Bremerton. The text is illustrated throughout with photographs of leaders, attendees, well wishers, and so forth, amounting to at least 200 hundred portraits of African American ushers and groups in Washington State and throughout the country. OCLC records just a single copy of one other souvenir program for the Ushers' annual convention, for the 33rd convention in 1952, held by Emory.
