New York: Targ Editions [William Targ at The Grenfell Press], 1982. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good +. First edition in English, one of 250 copies, small quarto size, 49 pp. Marguerite Yourcenar (1903-1987, born Marguerite Antoinette Jeanne Marie Ghislaine Cleenewerck de Crayencour) was the first woman elected to the the Académie française (1980). She was the winner of the Prix Femina and Erasmus Prize, and in 1965 was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. This collection of her poems are primarily from her 1956 book "Les Charites d'Alcippe" ("The Alms for Alcippe"), "the one book of original verse published in the author's maturity, containing only those poems she had saved from many years of writing...They represent a crystallization of the most important subjects and themes that have preoccupied [her] throughout her career" (n.b., from the Introduction, p. 7). ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter blue cloth over grey paper-covered boards, debossed on the front board is Yourcenar's signaure in blind, gilt lettering on the spine, blue endpapers with the fore- and bottom edges of the free endpapers uncut, frontispiece a black-and-white reproduction of a photograph of the author, title page in blue and black; Centaur type on Frankfurt paper, small quarto size (10 5/8" by 6 1/2"), pagination: [1-6] 7-47 [1, blank] [1, colophon], one of 250 copies, signed by Yourcenar at the colophon. With the original glassine wrapper. ___CONDITION: Volume fine overall, the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a hint of sunning to the top few inches of the blue cloth on the front board, else fine.
