Description
New York: Published by Harper & Brothers, 1835. First edition. Very Good. Twelvemo. 347, [12, ads] pp. Bound without the half-title, otherwise complete. Rebound in modern green leather. Some foxing and toning throughout. Still a Very Good copy of the uncommon first edition. Matthias and His Impostures contains the first substantial record of the life of Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree (1798 - 1883), and the only substantial record of her life published before her Narrative of Sojourner Truth (1850). Truth, of course, became a famed preacher, abolitionist, and women's rights activist whose Narrative is now regarded as one of the most important enslavement memoirs. Before she reached prominence as an activist and preacher, however, Truth spent three years as a follower of Robert Matthews, an evangelical Christian religious leader who established a commune in the Village of Sing Sing (now Ossining) in New York. In 1828, after Truth was emancipated under New York state law the previous year, she moved to New York City and became involved with several Methodist communities. She eventually joined Matthews' commune in 1832 (one of two Black members) and "believed wholeheartedly in his eclectic mixture of spiritualism, millenarianism, personal anointment, temperance, and holistic health practices" (ANB). Truth remained a follower of Matthews until 1835, when the businessman Eljah Pierson, another of Matthews' followers, died under mysterious circumstances at the commune. Matthews and Truth were accused by members of the commune of conspiring to poison Pierson, though they were eventually acquitted of his killing due to a lack of evidence, and Truth successfully sued for libel and cleared her name. The commune collapsed following the scandal, and there is no record of Truth's life until 1843, when she changed her name to Sojourner Truth and began her career as a preacher. The present work, published as something of an exposé of Matthews' scandalous downfall, contains many references to Truth's involvement with the commune. One passage even refers to Truth as a leader within the religious community, presaging her career as a preacher: "the black woman Isabella was very forward and active...Isabella must have been one of the principal actors and speakers in the religious rites and ceremonies that were observed" (p. 68). Very Good.
