Smith & Humphries 1412. BUC p. 973. RISM S4673. Stanley was an English composer, organist and violinist. "He became blind as the result of a domestic accident at the age of two, and began to study music as a diversion when he was seven. Little progress was made under his first teacher, John Reading ... but he got on so well under Maurice Greene at St Paul's Cathedral that before he was 12 he was appointed organist at the nearby church of All Hallows Bread Street. In 1726 he was elected to a similar post at St Andrew's, Holborn, 'in preference to a great number of candidates' (Burney), and in 1734 he was made organist to the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, having resigned from All Hallows in 1727. According to his pupil John Alcock ..., Stanley's playing of voluntaries at the Temple and St Andrew's attracted musicians from all over London, including Handel. He was also an excellent violinist and for several years directed the subscription concerts at the Swan Tavern, Cornhill, and the Castle, Paternoster Row. In 1729 he became the youngest person to gain a BMus degree from Oxford University. ... Thanks largely to his remarkable memory, Stanley was able to enjoy a comfortable living as an organist and teacher and to join in music-making and card-playing with a large circle of friends. He was also able to direct several Handel oratorios during the 1750s, and after Handel's death in 1759 he assumed responsibility for the annual Lenten oratorio seasons at Covent Garden (later at Drury Lane), first with J.C. Smith and from 1776 with Thomas Linley." Malcolm Boyd, revised by A.G. Williams in Grove Music Online.

Description
20 pp. 8vo (198 x 125 mm.), modern aubergine cloth (head of spine a little worn), title on upper cover. Paris: Félix & Regnault-Delalande, 1822. An extremely rare auction catalogue inventorying the collection of an obscure painter active at the turn of the century. A contemporary annotator has written in the surname for this anonymous sale on the title-page, corroborating Lugt’s attribution. An 1817 almanac of Paris records a painter with the same surname working at rue de Rohan, 6. Viglianis also exhibited a landscape at the 1814 Salon — no. 948 in the exhibition livret. 184 lots, consisting primarily of prints (lots 1-132) by artists such as Bartolozzi, Bervic, Bloemaert, Cochin, Le Bas, Desnoyers, Earlom, Green, Ingouf, Massard, Morghen, Strange, Wille, Woollett, etc. We then find original engraved plates by a number of contemporary artists. The final section of drawings includes the work of Bruandet, S. Gessner, H. Robert, and “Joseph Pascal Viglianis,” presumably the seller. With the list of vacations on the final page. A very rare catalogue in fine condition. In the characteristic binding of the Bibliothèque Heim. ❧ Lugt 10220.

Description
London: Peter Davies. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1965. 2nd printing. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [modest shelfwear to lower extremities (very slight exposure of board at lower tip of front cover), a few small spots on bottom edge of text block; the jacket is edgeworn and a bit soiled, with a few tiny nicks at the top of the spine and some wear and creasing along the top edge of the rear panel]. (B&W photo frontispiece) A "sort of sequel" to the author's 1959 previous memoir, "I Know the Face, But...", which dealt primarily with his life in the theatre. Bull, best known for his generally small but always memorable film performances (in such films as THE AFRICAN QUEEN, TOM JONES, and DR. STRANGELOVE), wrote a total of eleven books (most of the ones following this one being about teddy bears, of which he was an aficionado and avid collector), of which this one is decidedly the scarcest -- no doubt to the fact that it contains his hilarious accounts of two of his best-known movie roles: "Thwackum" in TOM JONES, directed by Tony Richardson, and the Russian Ambassador in Stanley Kubrick's DR. STRANGELOVE. (Part of the discussion of the latter film is his vivid description of filming the famous "pie fight in the War Room" sequence, which took nearly two weeks to shot but didn't make the final cut.) He expresses great admiration for both Kubrick and Peter Sellers, although he writes that he didn't like the film very much -- "the most bizarre film in which I've ever played" -- nor his own performance ("perf") in it. .

Austin, TX: [Harry Ransom] Humanities Research Center, 1974. First Edition, Second Impression, limited to 250 copies. Near Fine. 8vo. 29 pp. Title-page printed in black and orange. Original burnt-orange colored boards, original clear protective wrapper. NOT ex-library! A very useful and very readable account of the evidence -- and lack thereof -- supporting the argument that Johann Gutenberg was effectively the first "modern" printer in the West. Goff writes with authority, having been compiler of the indispensable "Third Census" of Incunabula in American Libraries. It is instructive to recall that by the end of the 15th century, "printing had been introduced into no less than 238 European communities and more than 1100 individual printers are known to have been operating these equally numerous presses during this 39-year interval" (p. 21). ¶ Designed by William R. Holman, this is one of 250 copies according to the colophon.
