Description
Paris: Chez Aubert, 1838. Daumier's Most Celebrated Work Les Robert Macaire [Caricaturana] Complete with 100 Spectacular Hand-Colored Plates, All Heightened with Gum Arabic A Remarkable Example in the Original Publisher's Blue Cloth DAUMIER, Honoré and Charles Philipon. Les Robert Macaire [Caricaturana]. Paris: 1838. First edition. Folio (13 3/16 x 10 3/8 inches; 338 x 263 mm.). One hundred [and one] hand-colored lithographed plates (complete) heightened with gum arabic. In this copy plate 96 "A tous les coeurs bien nés que le patrie est chère!!" (DR-451 published 10/28/1838) has been substituted by the insertion of "Robert Macaire 2e. Sèrie 7. Nouveautés philantropiques." (DR-872 published 04/04/1841) - The plate number has been changed in old ink to "96" - most likely by the publisher prior to binding - see note below. [An original hand colored example of plate 96 "A tous les coeurs bien nés que le patrie est chère!!" (DR-451 published 10/28/1838) has now been inserted after plate 95]. The first plate bound a little tight at top margin just touching image, plate 13 (DR-366) with small (1 1/2 inch) expertly repaired marginal tear just touching image, plate 32 (DR- 385); Small expert repair (5/8 inch) to inner blank margin of plate 46 (DR-401); tiny (5/16 inch) repaired tear on blank margins of plates 11 (DR-364), 31 (DR-385) and 48 (DR-403) - a few plates very slightly toned, plate 34 (DR-388) a little foxed. Publisher's diaper grain blue cloth, covers ruled in blind, front cover with "Robert - Macaire" decoratively stamped in gilt, plain endpapers (expertly re-cased, inner hinges repaired). Old (April 1942) booksellers catalog description on front free-endpaper (not mentioning the substituted plate). Old tape residue on front free and rear endpapers. An excellent example of Honoré Daumier's most celebrated work, the superb hand coloring bright and fresh. This is only the second time we have seen this book in the publisher's binding. Note: The second series of Robert Macaire - twenty lithographs (DR-866 - DR-885 was published from 10/25/1840 to 09/11/1842) and is excessively rare - we have never seen or handled any of these plates before. "Les Robert Macaire remains Daumier's best-known work... Baudelaire chose it... for specific discussion in his essay on French caricaturists and Carteret accorded it a place in his bibliography. Its contemporary popularity was immense. As an album it was published by Aubert in an edition of 2500 copies, a far larger number than for any other series [however the vast majority of these copies were issued with plain lithographs - only a few copies were issued with hand-coloring]. Yet so persistent was the demand that 6000 two-volume sets of reduced copies, called Les cent-et-un Robert Macaire, were published in 1839..." (Ray). Though 2,500 may have been printed few have survived. OCLC/KVK records only two complete copies in institutions worldwide, Sadleir's at the Morgan Library, and one at Yale. ABPC reports only seven complete copies at auction since 1935. The 'reduced' edition of 1839-41 Les cent-et-un Robert Macaire is still quite rare at auction (two complete copies only since 1975) but there are more copies in institutional holdings. "When politics became a forbidden topic in Le Charivari, where Caricaturana first appeared, Daumier and Philipon turned to social satire. If they could not attack Louis-Philippe directly, they could at least show the kind of society that flourished under his gross and venal regime. Taking the flamboyant and florid swindler Macaire from the character that Frederick Lemaitre had created in a hack melodrama called L'Auberge des adrets, they showed him... ranging through all kinds of commercial enterprise, in the stock market, in the banks, in the courts, and in dozens of other public settings, never failing to find eager dupes... Though Daumier's designs are are superb in themselves... they would be incomplete without the unfailing wit and point of Philipon's captions" (Ray). Daumier Register 354-373, 375-455; Ray, Art of the French Illustrated Book 161. Beraldi V, p. 124.

Description
Amsterdam: Petrus Shenk, 1735-38. First Edition in Dutch. 415 x 264 mm. (16 3/8 x 10 3/8"). Entirely complete (with continuous pagination, but with a jump in page numbering from the end of book XIII to the beginning of XIV, as usual). 15 parts in eight volumes. Translated by Florentius H. J. van Halen. HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY VELLUM, covers with large gilt entrelac centerpiece framed with gilt floral rule with bouquet-like cornerpieces, gilt floral border, raised bands, compartments richly gilt, titles and volume numbers handwritten in ink on spines, all edges gilt. With head- and tailpieces, 15 engraved titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes, and complete with frontispiece, two engraved portraits of the author and the engraver (the latter with shorter margins, probably tipped-in), and 760 OFTEN STRIKING COPPER ENGRAVINGS (on 758 plates), one with partial hand coloring, a few double-page. Front pastedown of first volume with handwritten note in French on lined paper; with additional black & white title to first work erroneously dated 1728. Nissen ZBI 3661; see also: Faber du Faur, "German Baroque Literature," p. 472. Trivial soiling to the vellum, the seventh volume with a faint marginal dampstain affecting a few quires (but not touching engravings), the odd negligible blemish, but AN OUTSTANDING SET, the very attractive original bindings showing only insignificant wear, and THE CONTENTS ESPECIALLY FRESH AND CLEAN THROUGHOUT, WITH VERY FINE IMPRESSIONS OF THE PLATES. This is the first Dutch translation of Scheuchzer's "Sacred Nature," one of the most splendid German illustrated books of the 18th century, presenting what surely is the most impressive combination of biblical exegesis and scientific illustration to be found in any printed book. First published in 1731-35 as the "Physica Sacra" in Latin, and as the "Kupfer-Bibel" in German (so-named for the amazing array of copperplate engravings), this work is arranged according to the progression of books in the Bible, citing passages from those chapters where phenomena from the natural world are mentioned. The typical pattern here includes a textual citation followed by the author's often lengthy remarks on the passage and, in many cases, a dramatic engraving to illustrate what is said. The plates are identical to the earlier editions (retaining the inscriptions in Latin and German) and are the work of Johann-Melchior Fuseli, of the well-known Zurich family of 18th and 19th century artists. The engraved scenes are always executed with great skill, are generally very animated, and are often fascinating. Of the 760 images meant to illustrate the text, many are strictly or primarily depictions of biblical scenes; several are simply illustrations of specimens of nature; and a large number, perhaps half, offer a kind of combination. An example of this last type includes a wonderful scene showing the birth of Man (as related in Genesis 1:26-27) depicting not only a startled Adam in his fecund paradise, but also 10 images of fetuses, placentas, and the skeletons of children, attached like mounted specimens to the architectural frame of the illustration. According to Faber du Faur, it is in this work that "the Baroque attains, philosophically as well as artistically, its high point and its conclusion. It is the last of those elegant works which do not really contain illustrations to a text but which are, in effect, composed of splendid plates with a text to accompany them." Scheuchzer (1672-1733) was a prolific naturalist who promoted at every opportunity the most modern scientific ideas, though without wanting to risk the accusation of being irreverent. He says that the present work represents an attempt at finding a harmony between reason and revelation, though it can also be seen as an effort to promulgate progressive theories under the venerable cloak of biblical commentary. The bibliographies disagree about the number of plates that ought to be present in this work and in other editions, but ours corresponds to copies previously sold at auction as complete. Copies of the "Physica Sacra" and its translations show up regularly for sale, but almost never does one see the work both complete and, as here, with a clean and fresh text in remarkably well-preserved and attractive contemporary bindings..

Description
Braunschweig: Vieweg, 1888. WITH: O. Fischer, Matyas Lerch, E. Phragmen, C. Neumann, C. Meray. 1. DEDEKIND, Richard Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen. Braunschweig: Vieweg and Son, 1888. 8vo. xviii, 58 pp., including half-title. First edition, rare, of Dedekind’s important work on set theory. His epochal 1872 publication, Stetigkeit und irrationale zahlen, gave the first rigorous definition of the system of real numbers, laying the foundation for much of modern day real analysis and point-set topology. This, his follow-up work, elaborates on his attempts “to derive a purely logical foundation for arithmetic, and devised a number of axioms that formally and exactly represented the logical concept of whole numbers” (DSB). Dedekind (1831-1916), a German mathematician, friend and colleague of Georg Cantor, claimed all of mathematics to be a branch of logic. In this work (The nature and meaning of numbers), he “presents a theory of the integers using set-theoretic concepts and outlines a possible approach to placing the rationals on a logistically well-founded axiomatic basis” (Parkinson, p. 415). 2. FISCHER, Otto Konforme abbildung sphärischer dreiecke auf einander mittelst algebraischer funktionen. Leipzig: von Metzger & Wittig, 1885. 8vo. 76 pp. Complete with half-title and 2 large folding plates on heavier stock. First edition of the author’s thesis on conforming images of spherical triangles by means of algebraic functions. Fischer (1861-1916) was a German physiologist and mathematician, earning a doctorate degree from the Franke Foundation in Halle an der Saale in 1885 under Felix Klein. His main interest was the mechanics of the muscles and joints of the human musculoskeletal system. He was a professor at the University of Leipzig, where he taught both medicine and mathematics. 3. First edition of this famous work on the calculation of the individual members of the Riemann prime number formula. The son of mathematics teachers, Phragmén (1863-1937) also taught mathematics before obtaining his degree at the University of Uppsala. He was an editor at the Acta Mathematica, where he corresponded with Poincare to correct a book in which he found a number of errors. He was also president of the Swedish Society of Actuaries. He is best known, however, for the Phragmén-Lindelöf principle, an extension of the maximum modulus principle of complex analysis to unbounded domains. 4. NEUMANN, Carl Ueber den Satz der virtuellen verrückungen; Ueber das princip der virtuellen oder facultativen verrückungen. [Leipzig: von Breitkopf und Härtel, 1869]. Two separate papers. 8vo. pp. [257]-280; [53]-64. In Konigl. Sachs. Gesellschaft der Wissenchaften. With annotations on the first couple of pages. At the end of the second paper, a thank you by C.F. Gauss. Two works on virtual displacements. Neumann created the second-type boundary, which, when imposed on an ordinary or partial differential equation, if specifies the value that the derivative of a solution is to take on the boundary of the domain. Neumann (1832-1925) was professor of mathematics at both the Universities of Tübingen and Leipzig. His main interests were in applied mathematics, and he wrote on mathematical physics, potential and electrodynamics. He was also editor of Mathematische Annalen. 5. LERCH, M[atyáš] Contributions à la théorie des fonctions; Addition au mémorie présenté dans la séance du 15 Octobre [Prag, 1886]. Two separate papers. 8vo. pp. 571-582; pp.423-432. With a 4 page letter containing mathematical symbols handwritten by Lerch to Karl Weierstrass (1815-1897) tipped in between the two papers. The letter is signed by Lerch and dated October 1890. A small section of page 582 is crossed out in the same hand. First printings of Lerch’s contributions to general mathematical functions. These papers are the first in a series dealing with the general theory of functions, the most significant of which constitutes construction of continuous functions having no derivative. These works were written quite early. Lerch (1860-1922) showed exceptional abilities while still studying at the Czech Technical University at Prague. Before 1896 he published more than 110 scientific papers in domestic as well as prominent foreign journals. Much of his work concerned mathematical analysis, including theories of infinite series, of the gamma function, of elliptic functions, and the integral calculus. Weierstrass is generally referred to as the father of modern analysis. He made significant contributions and advancements in the field of calculus of variations. Numerous theories and functions bear his name. 6. MÉRAY, [Hugues Ch[arles Robert] Théorie des radicaux fondée exclusivement sur les propriétés générales des séries entières. Dijon, Darantiere, [1885]. 8vo. 75, [1] pp. Title page in manuscript signed by Méray and dated Dijon, 1891. With annotations throughout probably by the author for another edition. First edition of Méray’s famous work, Radical theory based exclusively on the general properties of power series. Méray (1835-1911) is remembered for having anticipated, clearly and with only minor differences of style, Cantor’s theory of irrational numbers, one of the main steps in the arithmetization of analysis. Of interest, an earlier “arithmetical” theory of irrational numbers was propounded by Weierstraass in his lectures when he introduced the real numbers as sums of sequences of rational numbers. Dedekind also seems to have developed his theory of irrationals at an earlier date. No copies of Phragmén, Lerch or Méray are located by OCLC.

1946. FIRST PRINTINGS. 16 offprints. We are pleased to offer a collection of 16 offprints by Gerhard Fankhauser. Fankhauser (1901-1981) was a professor of biology at Princeton University and an expert on embryology and cell biology. Born in Switzerland, he received his Ph.D. at the University of Berne and came to America in 1929 as a Rockefeller research fellow, joining the Princeton faculty two years later. He was internationally known for his research on the development of amphibia. In experiments using hormone manipulation and cross-breeding techniques, he studied the control of chromosomes on the amphibian life cycle. His research showed that the size of a cell is directly related to the number of chromosomes it contains. Quite popular at Princeton, he was the author of well over one hundred papers and reviews. 1. “Cytological studies on egg fragments of the salamander triton. II. The history of the supernumerary sperm nuclei in normal fertilization and cleavage of fragments containint the egg nucleus.” Offprint from the Journal of Experimental Zoology, Vol. 62, No. 1, May, 1932. The list of plates is not present. "When Dickens began the publication of All the Year Round, the successor of Household Words, he realized the necessity of making a strong start. So he began writing A Tale of Two Cities, publishing the first of the serial in the opening number of his new periodical... As a novel of great popularity it probably ranks next to Pickwick and Copperfield" (Eckel 87). This was the last novel in which Dickens worked with "Phiz" after a partnership of 23 years, and was published on commission through the renewed partnership with Chapman & Hall. "A Tale of Two Cities originally appeared in the weekly journal All the Year Round from April 30 to November 26, 1859 (Nos. 1-31). It was also published in eight monthly parts, the last part forming a double number, from June- December 1859. The novel was published in book form on November 21, 1859." (Smith I, 13). Eckel 87. Barnet, Herts, UK: Homosap Inc, 1964. First editions. Near fine.. 11 issues (of 17) of Nuttall's masterful mimeo magazine that functioned as an important platform for the cut-up work of William S. Burroughs. An innovative and intricate assemblage (which included burn marks, holes, variously sized papers, fold-outs, stickers, and the like), MY OWN MAG was easily one of the most vital and exuberant little mags of the 1960s. And while it published the likes of Anselm Hollo, Charles Plymell, William Wantling, Doug Blazek, Bill Butler, Carl Weissner, Claude Pélieu, Robert Creeley, and Allen Ginsberg, Nuttall's publication was perhaps most infliential as a primary outlet for the work of Burroughs, who published numerous of his "cut-ups" across MOM's run. Issues included are: nos. 5, 6 ("Cut Up Issue"), 7, 8, 9 ("Special Post-Election Issue"), 10 ("All British Issue"), 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15. Issues, especially the early ones, are becoming increasingly uncommon, and substantive runs of any kind scarce. A representative collection of this indispensable artists' magazine. 11 volumes; majority 13'' x 8''. Original stapled mimeographed self wrappers. Various paginations. Mild wear here and there. Else a remarkably bright, clean, and sharp set.

"The French phrase querelle des femmes, meaning 'the woman question,' refers to a literary debate about the nature and status of women. This debate began around 1500 and continued beyond the end of the Renaissance." (Encyclopedia dot com). "At the heart of the 'querelle des femmes' lay the fundamental mistrust of women, and their relegation to a subsidiary role in all respect... Some members of the clergy took a more liberal view, but the most violent attacks on women, expressing real hatred and fear, were written by priests or members of religious order... One of the most popular anti-feminist works was Jacques Olivier's 'Alphabet de l'imperfection et malice des femmes,' published in Paris in 1617 and reprinted at least eighteen times by 1650, which provoked many refutations and kept the 'Querelle femmes' alive for several decades. It was still being reprinted in 1683, when two editions appeared in Rouen. All editions except the first, which is anonymous, give the author as 'Jacques Olivier, licencier aux Loix et en droit canon', but according to Maclean he was almost certainly a Franciscan monk, Alexis Trousset, who had published other works at around the same time. His book is a vicious attack on what he perceived as the coquetry, vanity, hypocrisy and inconstancy of the female sex, subscribing to the view that women are sexually more voracious than men and using this prejudice to undermine altogether their moral and intellectual status." (Women and Theatre in Seventeenth- century France. Elizabeth Rosalind Grist) When author Le Sieur Vigoureux "argued that the faults attributed to women occurred just as frequently among men, Trousset replied (within months of publishing the original Alphabet ) by contrasting the alleged ignorance of his critic with the unimpeachable authorities on which he relied." Trousset's Alphabet's first refutation was "entitled La defense des femmes, contre l'alphabet de leur pretendue malice et imperfection... Its author describes himself as 'le sieur Vigoureux, capitaine du chasteau de Brye-Comte-Robert'... His tract, which rests on the tenet 'les femmes sont telles que les hommes les rendent', (women are what men make them) provokes two replies, one from Trousset "Resonse aux impertinencer de l'aposte' capitaine Vigoureux, sur la defence des femmes" and le sieur de La Bruyere's "Replique a l'antimalice ou defiance des femme du sieur Vigoureux", both from the same printer (Jean Petit-Pas), and both bearing the same date of Privilege, 27 October 1617. Brunet, IV-182 HBS 69455. $4,500.

Description
Leipzig: Valentin Schumann ("in officina Valentini Dammandri"), 1515. Fine. Octavo (21 cm); 32 leaves. Title and postscript set in large gothic type; text in roman. Woodcut title page within four-sided border, includes human figures with stylized plants, a putto, birds, etc. About 66 woodcut initials. In recent quarter leather over marbled boards. References: Durling 4189; BM/STC German 815; This edition not in Adams, Wellcome, Osler, etc.. Title page reproduced in J. Luther, "Die Titeleinfassungen der Reformationszeit," pl. 89. From what modern scholarship can discern, Serenus was a poet who had a keen interest in medical science and pharmaceuticals. He is famous for using the formula "abracadabra" in the treatment of illness, and for amassing a personal library of 60,000 scrolls. The 1,107 hexameter lines that make up this essay were inspired by the "Medicina Plinii," a book of pharmacy by a pseudo-Pliny of the mid-4th-century, as well as the real Pliny's Natural History and the Greek guide to materia medica by Dioscorides. The text consists of prescriptions and remedies for about 65 different diseases. The poem was extremely influential in the practice of Late-Antique and Medieval medicine. It was reprinted 21 times between the first edition of 1484 and 1731, apart from inclusion in many compilations of medical texts. As late as 1866 it was translated into German, Prescriptions cover a range of ailments from headache, itching, elephantiasis, bad breath, gall stones, pimples, treatment of wounds, and even money bites. The text is followed by Remmius Flavianus, "Carmen de ponderibus et mensuris," a versified explanation of weights and measurees specifically for use by physicians.

1932. TAKEI, Takeo. Kansatsu ehon - Kinda bukku - boku kei. 16 pp. including covers, all colour lithographs on light card. Oblong folio, 260 x 380 mm., bound in publisher's illustrated wrappers in a new blue cloth folding box. Tokyo: Fureberukan, 1932. This is one in a series of "observation" books begun in 1927 by the now named Froebel-kan - based on the principles of educator Friedrich Froebel. An interesting example of prewar Japanese book design for children, with some of the plates verging on kitsch, and some almost surreally avant-garde.

Description
1780. IRWIN, Eyles. A Series of Adventures in the Course of a Voyage up the Red Sea, on the Coast of Arabia and Egypt; and of a Route through the Deserts of Thebais, Hitherto Unknown to the European Traveller, in the year MDCCLXXVII, in Letters to a Lady. Dublin: Sleater, Whitestone, Potts, Colles, Wilson, Jenkins, Flin Etc. 1780. 4to, 576 pp. With the original attached fold-out map of The Red Sea, wants 2 other maps. Antique full leather binding, with gold inlay on the spine. First edition of Eyles Irwin's exciting personal account and observations in Arabia and Egypt in the 18th century. Irwin was born in Calcutta and served with the East India Company. Irwin was dismissed from the East India Company in 1776, and traveled through Arabia and Egypt on his return to England to seek redress. He left India in 1777 for England, when his ship was captured by pirates. From Cossier he was forced to cross the desert to Suez and then on to Luxor, Cairo and Alexandria. His journey lasted eleven months. Irwin's narrative is comprised of letters to an unnamed "Lady," which provides the reader with candid observations of the convergence of European and Arab cultures in the late 1700's. The letters detail the journey to various ports, cities and deserts of modern day Saudi Arabia. This book was published in 1780, a time when European exploration and travel was at its peak. The Arab world during the 1700's was considered mysterious, enchanting and exotic, thus attracting European travelers like Irwin. Tidrick remarks that Irwin's "travel narrative of 1780 was a long recitation of Bedouin treachery." Includes two poems by Irwin 'Ode to the dessert' and 'Ode to the Nile.' The title panel on the spine remains, the reverse board was detached and has been sewn back on with dark thread. There is a 3 1/2" split on the front hinge, although the hinge is still strong. Corners bumped and worn, with the top and base of the spine worn, with some chipping. The inside pages are very good. Overall in good condition. Blackmer Collection 865; Atabey Collection 609.

Description
New York: Broadway Publishing Company, [ [n.d., copyright 1904] First edition under this title. Seemingly predated by an edition under the title Violina; or, Poland and Liberty (New York: John L. Strus, 1904). Both editions are scarce. OCLC records only six physical copies of the Strus edition (Howard, Michigan State, LAPL, Ohio State, Macomb Community College, National Taiwan University) and four physical copies of the Broadway edition (the Huntington, Allegheny College, University of Pittsburgh, and NYPL). Publisher's purple cloth stamped in pink and gilt. . Octavo. . With three plates (frontispiece and three illustrations of Florence). Spine sunned and some discoloration to cloth. Some foxing to first and last few leaves. Open tear to margin of p. 162 (not touching text). Inscribed by Mary Ives Todd, "To my Dear Friend, Mr. F.A. Calkins, with the compliments of the author." A very good copy. Like many of the other novels by Mary Van Lennup Ives Todd (1849 – ca. 1915?), Violina uses the story of a young woman's tumultuous marriage to reflect on religious tradition, women's rights, and how husbands exert control over wives. The titular Violina Isartoryski is a young Polish American woman who travels to Florence to train as a musician. In Italy, she marries a musician who mistreats her; the pair eventually divorce when Violina discovers that he has two children with another woman. The themes of Violina reflect those of Todd's novel Deborah (1896), which examines marriage and gender in Salt Lake City during the early years of Mormon settlement there.

Description
New York: Pocket Books (1017). Near Fine. 1954. 2nd printing. Softcover. [a very nice copy, with ust a touch of edge- and surface-wear to covers, firm and uncreased spine]. Mass Market PB "A novel of gamblers, outlaws and lynching in the American West," and renowned as the source of the famously overheated Nicholas Ray film -- which has all those elements but oh so much more, with Joan Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge squaring off, ostensibly over the affections of the laconic title character (played by Sterling Hayden), but really just because they hate each other's guts. Definitely a movie tie-in edition -- it even includes the statement "Movie produced by Republic Pictures, November 1953" as part of the publishing history on the copyright page! -- although the tie-in is confined to the first inside page, where a line drawing of Crawford is accompanied by her purported testimonial about the book ("For me there was a special excitement in the role of this fascinating woman...."). Externally, the book is like a miniaturized version of the hardcover edition, using the same cover art -- although upon close comparison, it's evident that the figure of the woman has been re-drawn in order to make her face stand out a little more (no attempt was made to make her resemble the then-45-year-old Joan, though). .
