Description
28/12/1852. In 1852, President Millard Fillmore appointed Joseph R. Ingersoll U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. At that time, trade was common between the nations, but so were difficulties. In the lead-up to the War of 1812 the British seized American ships, the owners of which had claims against the British government for their losses. By 1852, claims against the U.S. by British subjects and against Britain by Americans had accumulated and grown to the point that the two nations determined to work out a settlement of these claims.Document signed, Washington, December 28, 1852, giving Ambassador Ingersoll “a full power…to treat of and concerning claims of citizens of the United States upon the British government, and of and concerning claims of subjects of Her Britannic Majesty upon the government of the United States…” Doubtless shippers, manufacturers, and others engaged in trade benefited from the positive show of amity and friendship this settlement would have brought about.

Description
London, 1790. Highly detailed description of the ranks and duties of all naval personnel, from commanders in chief to the lowest seamen, schoolmasters, cooks and marines. The large folding table is a sample chart of Observations of the Qualities of His Majestys Ship the... intended for assessing sailing qualities of a particular vessel. Also included in the book are tables of pay and manning rates, samples of forms and laws regulating pay, labor and stores, which amount to a treatise on how ships of this era were provisioned. The level of detail is amazing The beef provided for His Majestys ships is to be cut into four pound pieces, and the pork into two pound pieces; and no unusual pieces are to be put up, such as leg bones, shins of oxen, cheeks of hogs, ox hearts, &c. A closeup look at the workings of the Royal Navy, in a vitally important era in its history. Thirteenth edition of this work, which was first published in 1731. All editions have become scarce. See Adams & Waters p. 366. Bound in original calf, which is scuffed at edges and corners. Leather spine label chipped. Front hinge cracked but holding. Text complete and in good condition. A servicable copy of a scarce book.. 19 x 25 cm. 232 pp. b/w engravings.

Description
1892. A Response to Contemporary Debates About Prohibition Black, Henry Campbell [1860-1927]. A Treatise on the Laws Regulating the Manufacture and Sale of Intoxicating Liquors. St. Paul: West Publishing Company, 1892. lii, 711 pp. Octavo (9" x 6"). Contemporary law calf, rebacked in period style. Blind frames to boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, hinges mended. Light rubbing to board edges, corners lightly bumped, light toning to text, offsetting to margins of endleaves. Small early bookseller stamp to front pastedown, interior otherwise clean. A handsome copy. $950. * Only edition. Black is best known as the author of the great law dictionary that bears his name, but he also wrote several highly regarded treatises. His treatise on alcoholic beverages, the first published in the United States, was a response to contemporary debates about prohibition, which were gaining in intensity in the late 1800s. Given this background it is not surprising that Black declared his neutrality at the end of his preface: "This book is not a plea for any particular system of liquor legislation. It is purely and solely a legal treatise. The law-writer has no more to do with the wisdom, justice, or expediency of the statutes whose legal effect he discusses than has the court which is called upon to administer them" (iv). London: William Pickering, 1851. FIRST EDITION. Publisher’s cloth, front cover detached and spine unglued on Volume I. From the library of John Farquhar Fulton, with his book-label in both books. First edition. According to Osler, the second volume is made up of unsold sheets of The Bride’s Tragedy and Death’s Jest-Book, which Pickering first issued separately, but as it did not sell well it was included in this collected edition. However, the latter was apparently missing from both Osler’s and the Bodleian copy.

Description
Boston: Published by Adams & Co., 1867. 55, [1 blank] pp. Stitched. Original printed pale blue wrappers [rear wrapper detached from text; light edge chipping]. Good+. The Meeting and the Association were intended "to promote the interests of pure religion, to encourage the scientific study of theology, and to increase fellowship in the spirit," leaving "each individual responsible for his own opinions alone." Participants included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Dale Owen, Lucretia Mott, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Isaac Mayer Wise, and Max Lilienthal. Mott praises religious freedom and the "enlarged ideas and enlarged spirit of the religious world." Owen speaks in defence of Spiritualism. Higginson advocates "free religion...love to God and love to Man." Emerson provides the "closing remarks." He was "greeted with much enthusiasm", and says, "The church is not large enough for the man, it cannot inspire the enthusiasm which is the parent of everything good in history."
