A Fine copy, bound in full dark blue crushed levant morocco over beveled boards, covers elaborately bordered in gilt with decorative anchor corner-pieces, front cover with a sailing ship in gilt. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt-ruled board-edges and turn-ins, blue watered silk endleaves. Inside front cover with a large rectangular panel of green morocco with a superb and exquisite oval portrait miniature of Joseph Conrad (3 x 2 3/8 inches) under glass and surrounded by a gilt metal frame. Front hinge of clamshell case neatly repaired, rear hinge starting. Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-British writer whose reputation as one of the greatest English-language novelists holds true today. Conrad's prose is infused with a unique sensibility blurring the boundaries between modernism and realism; he was never afraid to depict the darkness of the humanity. In much of his fiction Conrad drew from his experiences as a sailor, such as in his second novel An Outcast of the Islands (1896), which recounts the downfall of Peter Willems. As in his more famous Heart of Darkness, Conrad relishes in this jungle setting. The story of the Sangorski & Sutcliffe Bindery reads like something out of a novel-when two of Douglas Cockrell's talented apprentices, Frances Sangorski and George Sutcliffe, were laid off during an economic downturn they began working out of an attic. Eventually their bindery would be famous for its intricate multicolored leather inlays and elaborate gold and jeweled bindings. Although named after the English miniaturist Richard Cosway (1742-1821), the desirable "Cosway Binding" with its jewel-like portrait miniature set into a fine binding was first developed at the turn of the century by J.H. Stonehouse, director of London's Henry Sotheran Booksellers. Their miniatures were painstakingly crafted by the talented painter Miss C. B. Currie (1849-1940). As the style grew in popularity, other publishing houses quickly began to reproduce this technique-each developing their own desirable take on the aesthetic-referred to as "Cosway style.". Fine.

Description
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1816. Seventh edition. Two volumes bound in one. Octavo (8 3/8 x 5 1/4 inches; 214 x 133 mm.). [i]-viii, [1]-376; [i]-viii, [1]-316 pp. Volume one with an engraved portrait frontispiece and additional vignette title; Volume two with an engraved view of the islet which he had often forded when the river was not knee-deep. Some offsetting from plates to title-pages. With a fine fore-edge painting (ca. 1935) by Lyman Young depicting a typical English county fox-hunting scene with hounds and riders. The fore-edge is signed by Lyman Young on the final free-endpaper. Full contemporary maroon straight-grain morocco, covers decoratively bordered in gilt, spine with four shallow raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, gilt decorated turn-ins, red paper endleaves. Minor repairs to the outer joints, near the crown. Housed in a later red cloth slipcase. Lyman Young (1893-1984) was an American cartoonist, trained at the Chicago Art Institute and based on California, famous for his comic strip "Tim Tyler's Luck." According to Weber, "Young knew Col. Don L. Wells who commissioned him to make fore-edge paintings, possibly during the mid-1930s in Los Angeles, CA. Young apparently did not supply title-labels, but he did sign the books, typically on the rear free endleaf, facing the fore-edge. In 1940 he demonstrated painting on a fore-edge as part of the "Art in Action" project at the Golden Gate International Exposition, Palace of Fine Arts..." (Annotated Dictionary of Fore-Edge Painting). There are eight examples of Lyman Young's Fore-Edge Painting in Weber's Annotated Dictionary including the present, which is pictured in color and described thusly "... the artist offered a scene of fox hunting with the hounds and riders. Young wrote his name as per his usual style, on the back inside leaf along the recto's edge, using red colored paint: his name in capital letters..." (Annotated Dictionary of Fore-Edge Painting). A rare example of Lyman Young's work.

Description
London: C. Kegan Paul & Co, 1880. FIRST EDITION. Complete with half-title, frontispiece, illustrations in text, and folding colored map of Portugal. Recently rebound in half-cloth with marbled boards and end-papers; text block is clean with only minor browning, a few pages slightly chipped. The folding map is in excellent condition. Stamp on title: “Sold from the collections of the Long Island Historical Society.”. First edition, though portions were previously published in the Fortnightly Review, the New Quarterly Magazine, and Cornhill Magazine. Includes chapters on Portuguese history, literature, and people. As the author states in the preface: “My book is so far nondescript that it is neither a book of history, nor of criticism, nor of pure description; nor an antiquarian work, nor a social or statistical one, nor a book of travel; but it is a medley of all these things.” This work is one of three that Crawfurd wrote about Portugal; the Oxford DNB describes the works collectively as “sympathetic but sketchy studies of Portuguese life which are of interest for their accounts of the Portuguese peasantry and rural customs.” Crawfurd (1834-1909) was the British consul at Oporto, Portugal, from 1867 until 1891.
