First edition of this handsomely printed book. It is very rare, with no copy in WorldCat. This is an important publication: a short Confucian treatise, it was a pointed critique of the Neo-Confucian orthodoxy of Zhu Xi (1130-1200) and Lu Xiangshan (11381), then prevalent in Japan. Yamaga, the founder of the “School of Ancient Learning,” argued for a return to the original teachings of Confucius in order to establish correct governance and ethical behavior. This new thinking implicitly questioned contemporary official doctrines of the governing bakufu, who deemed the book offensive. Following its publication, Yamaga was arrested and exiled to Akō for nearly a decade, and the book was banned. Peter Kornicki, in his chapter on censorship in The Book in Japan, writes about this book: “Another early case is that of Yamaga Sokō. In 1666 he was banished and placed under house arrest for writing [the present book], which had been published the preceding year. In this work he had been critical of the neo-Confucianism of Zhu Xi, but precisely what the Bakufu found offensive is not clear. There are two aspects to this case that are significant. Firstly, in this instance the author was punished and not, as was usually the case, the publisher. This indicates that the problem was one of the authorship of views rather than of publication per se…Secondly, Seikyō yōroku had not contravened any known edicts and this case consequently demonstrates that the edicts were for guidance, and the Bakufu took action on individual cases as it saw fit” (p. 333). Yamaga (1622-85), “was an immensely influential teacher; the forty-seven rōnin considered themselves followers of his strategy. Yamaga set himself the task of explaining the justice in a system in which one class, the samurai, lived on the labors of another, the farmers… “He found that justification in the higher morality of the samurai’s calling. The work of the samurai, as he saw it, was to reflect on his station in life, give loyal service to his master, deepen his fidelity with his friends, and ‘devote himself to duty above all’…Yamaga Sokō’s was the most satisfactory exposition of these ideas, and from his time bushido, the ‘Way of the warrior,’ became a standard term… “Yamaga Sokō re-arranged the basic Confucian virtues to Japanese advantage by grouping valor with knowledge and benevolence. A Neo-Confucian work by Yi Sang-jŏng (1710-81), a scholar of the late Chosŏn period, who systematized and explicated various interpretations of Kyŏngjaejam [Admonitions for the Study of Mindfulness and Orderliness] by the Chinese philosopher Zhu Xi (1130-1200). This work represents a transhistorical and international synthesis of Neo-Confucian moral philosophy, bridging Song and Ming Chinese and Chosŏn Korean intellectual traditions. Throughout the ten chapters, Yi expounds on Zhu Xi's Admonitions, which consisted of only 160 characters but had gained numerous annotations and interpretations since its publication. It was further innovated when Wang Bai (1197-1274) visualizd the work diagrammatically. In 1568, one of the most important Confucian scholars in Chosŏn Korea, Yi Hwang (1501-79), incorporated it in his Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning (聖學十圖). In 1750, Yi Sang-jŏng continued this scholarly lineage in Kyŏngjaejam chipsŏl, gathering the doctrines of thinkers across China and Chosŏn, with emphasis on their teachings on mind-cultivation. The text advances the Neo-Confucian concept of kyŏng (敬 reverence) as a unifying moral principle that integrates seemingly dichotomous realms: the stillness and movement of time, the inner agency of mind, and the outer propriety of conduct. By arguing that earnest scholarly investigation combined with genuine embodied experience constitutes true realization of reverence, Yi turned abstract philosophical doctrine into practical guidance for scholars navigating personal cultivation and social responsibility in late Chosŏn society. "Chapter 1 discusses the study of the mind during stillness, Chapter 2 discusses the study of the mind that combines both movement and stillness, Chapter 3 discusses the solemnity and decorum of the outward appearance, Chapter 4 summarizes it again, Chapter 5 discusses the subjectivity and efficacy of the mind, Chapter 6 discusses how the mind can be the foundation and handle matters consistently, and Chapter 7 summarizes the preceding six chapters again, stating that the essence is to have a correct appearance that is consistent in movement and outward appearance. Some old spotting at the margins, professional restoration at the left side of the photo where it had previously been folded, with some scuffing still evident and affecting the images of two players and a pennant slightly; v-shaped chip carefully infilled at the left margin, not affecting the photo but affecting a few characters in the line of Japanese writing, on the verso. Hand-dated in 1924 on the margin. Images of several Japanese American baseball teams who were participating in the 2nd annual Baseball Tournament in Stockton, California in 1924. The team players are lined up on the field, holding pennants with their team names imprinted: the Lodi Y.M.A.; the Stockton Yamato; the San Jose Asahi; the Sacramento Nippon; and the Alameda Athletics. The stands behind the teams are full of spectators. Sponsors for the teams included the Nippon Sanitarium, the Stockton Times, the Shindo Co., the Tsuruya Co., and the California Grocery Co. respectively. A partial translation of the text appears to offer a caption for the photo, including the words "yakyuu taikai," ie: "big baseball meetup." According to Ralph Pearce's book "From Asahi to Zebras: Japanese American Baseball in San Jose, California," (San Jose, CA: 2005), "[t]he first Japanese American baseball team in California was the Fujii Club of San Francisco, organized by Chiura Obata in 1903.... Between 1903 and 1915, many Japanese American baseball teams were organized, including teams in Fresno, Florin, Stockton, Sacramento, Lodi and San Jose. These teams were composed primarily of first-generation immigrants (Issei)." The San Jose Asahi team was organized in the early 1910s, and by 1924, had become "a real team," thanks in part to their manager Henry Yoshihara. The Stockton Yamato Athletic Club was founded in 1920. By 1925, the Sacramento Nippon, the San Jose Asahi, and the Stockton Yamato, joined with other Japanese teams to form the Northern California Japanese Baseball League. Many Nissei (second generation immigrants) filled the ranks of the teams. Veteran sports writer Jack Graham of the San Jose Mercury Herald wrote a number of articles about the Japanese teams, encouraging his readers to see and support them. At roughly this same time, Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924, known as the Johnson-Reed Act, strengthening the laws against immigration by people of Asian lineage. Those in the U.S. were already barred from naturalizing, and this act excluded from entry "any alien who by virtue of race or nationality was ineligible for citizenship." Tensions between America and Japan increased as a result. [see: the US Dept. of State's website, "Milestones in History" for information on this act]. In any event a rare survivor of an early California-based Japanese American baseball tournament.

Nobel laureate Ernest Rutherford won the 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work on radioactivity, work introduced to the world in the present first editions of Radio-Activity (1904) and Radiations from Radioactive Substances (1930). It was this research that was later extended by his research assistant John Cockcroft, who himself received the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for artificially accelerating atomic particles and splitting the atom. When Winston Churchill, having visited MIT in the US after stepping down from the political arena, envisaged a new science-centric research centre for the UK, one individual stood out as an obvious choice to lead the new college in its formative years. Sir John Cockcroft was appointed by the Crown as the first Master of Churchill College, Cambridge - a new constituent of the university where he had worked under Rutherford and where he later achieved the first artificial disintegration of an atomic nucleus. An honour marking the fourth decade since he first joined Rutherford at Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory, Cockcroft served as Master from 1959 until his death in 1967. In this time, he welcomed the College's first cohorts of undergraduate students and graduate researchers, appointed the its firsts Fellows and oversaw the construction of its initial facilities - making the College his home in his later years, where he would die after eight years in the role. In addition to his research papers, lab books and correspondences, Cockcroft's working library was presented to the College library after his death. Included in the bequest were Cockcroft's first editions of Rutherford's seminal 1904 textbook Radio-Activity, which filled the great vacuum formed following Rutherford's work on alpha particles in the preceding decades, and Radiations from Radioactive Substances, the "final form" of Rutherford's textbook which became "the principal source for all aspiring nuclear physicists" across the world - not least Fermi, Einstein and a generation of chemists and physicists in America (Mackintosh, "The Third Man: Charles Drummond Ellis, 1895-1980", Notes and Records of the Royal Society of London 49 (1995), p. 277). The present editions bear Cockcroft's memorial bookplate and the latter is signed by Cockcroft on the front free endpaper. They were de-accessioned and sold by Churchill College in 2015. Both are in excellent condition and pay tribute to the formative relationship between two of the twentieth century's most accomplished scientists, Rutherford and Cockcroft. RUTHERFORD, ERNEST. Put out by Morris Gest- an important Broadway theatrical producer and director- this is a touring programme for the Moscow Art Theatre's Musical Studio's first US tour in 1925-26. The Musical Studio originated as Nemirovich-Danchenko's offshoot of the Moscow Art Theatre from Stanislavsky's main company in 1919, as a result of the Russian Civil War. Danchenko's goal was to apply Stanislavsky's acting method to musical theater, in order to make an ensemble "free from old tradition," with "all the elements of musical stage action... united into one," by means of "synthetic actors." All of the Studio's productions were operatic works, some of them written by major composers such as Offenbach, Bizet, and Rachmaninoff. The librettos of the pieces were based on texts of famous classic writers, including Aristophanes and Pushkin. The Musical Studio's US repertoire included five pieces- "The Daughter of Madame Angot," "LA Perichole," "Lysistrata," "Carmencita and the Soldier," and "Love and Death." Morris Gest and F. Ray Comstock oversaw their stateside production and direction. The pamphlet is a collection of essays and articles about the Studio. Nemirovich-Danchenko co-writes the libretto summaries with Dr. Sergei Berthensson. Andei Hudiakoff, a successful New York artist, provides several large illustrations, including the front cover. Along with many pictures of the Russian and the American production crew and cast, the pamphlet is also heavily illustrated with color reproductions of original costume plates drawn by Isaac Rabinovich, a former director of the Moscow Kamerny Jewish Theatre who joined Danchenko's project. Creasing and several closed tears along the bottom and side edges. Binding overall in good, interior in fine condition. Pamphlet overall in very good condition.

Sibley was a kindergarten teacher in Manhattan and an extremely devoted theatergoer, judging from the present album. For each of the many performances she attended, she records in ink on the program or ticket stub the date of the show and who she attended the performance with. She appears most drawn to opera and comedies. Over fifteen venues are represented, and she pastes in newspaper clippings highlighting approx. thirty different actresses including Maude Adams, Ethel Barrymore, and Janet Dunbar. Includes approx. 300 to 350 pieces of ephemera including: dance cards, programs, magazine clippings, ticket stubs, wedding announcements and invitations, Valentine's and Christmas cards, and correspondence from students, friends and family (manuscript, telegrams and lettergrams). Highlights include two spreads of ephemera collected relating to Georgia Kane's 1913 performance in "Adele"; a spread for Alice Dovey in "The Queen of the Movies"; and a fun die-cut program for "The Dummy". GEORGE BEADLE (1903 – 1989) was an American geneticist. In 1958 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Edward Tatum for their discovery of the role of genes in regulating biochemical events within cells. He also served as the 7th President of the University of Chicago. Beadle and Tatum's key experiments involved exposing the bread mold Neurospora crassa to x-rays, causing mutations. In a series of experiments, they showed that these mutations caused changes in specific enzymes involved in metabolic pathways. These experiments led them to propose a direct link between genes and enzymatic reactions, known as the One gene-one enzyme hypothesis. In 1931 Beadle was awarded a National Research Council Fellowship at the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena, where he remained from 1931 until 1936. During this period he continued his work on Indian corn and began, in collaboration with Professors Theodosius Dobzhansky, S. Emerson, and Alfred Sturtevant, work on crossing-over in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. In 1936 Beadle left the California Institute of Technology to become Assistant Professor of Genetics at Harvard University. A year later he was appointed Professor of Biology (Genetics) at Stanford University and there he remained for nine years, working for most of this period in collaboration with Tatum. In 1946 Beadle returned to the California Institute of Technology as Professor of Biology and Chairman of the Division of Biology. Here he remained until January 1961 when he was elected Chancellor of the University of Chicago and, in the autumn of the same year, President of this University. After retiring, Beadle undertook a remarkable experiment in maize genetics. In several laboratories he grew a series of Teosinte/Maize crosses. Then he crossed these progeny with each other. He looked for the rate of appearance of parent phenotypes among this second generation. The vast majority of these plants were intermediate between maize and Teosinte in their features, but about 1 in 500 of the plants were identical to either the parent maize or the parent teosinte. Using the mathematics of Mendelian genetics, he calculated that this showed a difference between maize and teosinte of about 5 or 6 genetic loci. This demonstration was so compelling that most scientists now agree that Teosinte is the wild progenitor of maize. PAUL BERG (June 30, 1926 – February 15, 2023) was an American biochemist and professor at Stanford University. He was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1980, along with Walter Gilbert and Frederick Sanger. The award recognized their contributions to basic research involving nucleic acids, especially recombinant DNA. After completing his graduate studies, Berg spent two years (1952–1954) as a postdoctoral fellow with the American Cancer Society, working at the Institute of Cytophysiology in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Washington University School of Medicine, and spent additional time in 1954 as a Scholar in Cancer Research with the Department of Microbiology at the Washington University School of Medicine. He worked with Arthur Kornberg, while at Washington University. Berg was also tenured as a research fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge. He was a professor at Washington University School of Medicine from 1955 until 1959. After 1959, Berg moved to Stanford University, where he taught biochemistry from 1959 until 2000 and served as director of the Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine from 1985 until 2000. In 2000 he retired from his administrative and teaching posts, continuing to be active in research. Berg is arguably most famous for his pioneering work involving gene splicing of recombinant DNA. Berg was the first scientist to create a molecule containing DNA from two different species by inserting DNA from another species into a molecule. This gene-splicing technique was a fundamental step in the development of modern genetic engineering. After developing the technique, Berg used it for his studies of viral chromosomes. Berg was a professor emeritus at Stanford.
