Description
Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1867, 1869, 1870. 142 x 92 mm. (5 1/2 x 3 3/4"). Six volumes.. DISTINCTIVE TARTAN WARE BINDINGS BY MAUCHLINE, covers of lacquered wooden boards decorated in various tartans, with small gilt lettering at head of front cover identifying the plaid; raised bands, red, green, or dark blue pebble-grain morocco spines gilt in compartments with a dotted-rule saltire and either a large centerpiece ornament or a small ornament in each of the compartments created by the saltire, gilt turn-ins, white moiré endpapers, all edges gilt. IN THE ORIGINAL GILT-DECORATED PLUSH-LINED TARTAN-COVERED BOX with individual slots for each volume, lid with an onlaid picture of a bust of Scott, the label beneath it reading "Bust by Chantrey," front of the box with a small titling label in the form of a shield. Each volume with extra engraved title page with vignette of Scottish locations important in Scott's life or work, that for "Lord of the Isles" dated 1852. The box less bright that the individual volumes, but showing very little wear. Volume covers with slight signs of friction as a result of insertion and extraction from the box, occasional small spots of light foxing, faint smudges, stains, or corner creases internally, but all these imperfections trivial. Extremely pleasing copies, clean and fresh internally, in scarcely worn, remarkably lustrous bindings. This charming set contains six popular works by Sir Walter Scott--"Lay of the Last Minstrel," "Marmion," "Lady of the Lake," "Rokeby," "Lord of the Isles," and "Bridal of Triermain"--appropriately bedecked in Scottish plaids. Mauchline souvenir ware was produced from the early 19th century, and is named for the Scottish town that centered the trade. Small, useful wood items were decorated with scenes capitalizing on the town's association with Robert Burns, but also with Scottsiana, or other Scottish themes. First appearing in the 1840s, tartan ware designs were "woven" onto paper (then lacquered to wood) by a patented machine using a series of pens and colored inks. A fire in the 1930s destroyed the machinery and essentially ended the business. There are three tartans represented on the six volumes--Stuart appears three times, M'Pherson twice, and Robertson once--all with red as the chief color. Mauchline volumes can be found, either singly or in sets, but they often are encountered in rather used condition, and the original presentation box offered here is very often lacking..
