Description
London, 1883. First edition. Fine. A 4 7/8 x 5 3/8 inches original pen, ink and watercolor illustration. Greenaway's drawing is reproduced on page 51 of the book Little Ann and Other Poems (London: George Routledge & Sons, 1883). A sweet image with two girls dressing in matching outfits, standing in the garden. One appears engaged with picking daisies while the other looks out at the viewer. This illustration has all of the typical gentility and warmth that made Greenaway's work so beloved. "Victorian-era children's book artist and author Kate Greenaway began her career during the early 1870s illustrating greeting cards," (NYPL) but she soon turned her successful brush towards book illustration. "Like fellow illustrators Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott, Greenaway sought to publish innovative children's works of the highest quality. Her focus on depictions of children, however, set her illustrations apart from those of her contemporaries. Greenaway's work is cherished today for its unaffected, pastoral imagery" (NYPL). Famous critic John Ruskin was known to be a huge admirer of her art. Greenaway worked on illustrations for Little Ann and Other Poems (based on poems by Jane and Ann Taylor) throughout the spring of 1883. The artist Henry Stacy Marks wrote of Little Ann, "on the whole, I might say entirely, your best book..."(Engen). This illustration accompanied a poem, which reads: "Little sister, come away, And let us in the garden play, For it is a pleasant day. On the grass-plat let us sit, Or, if you please, we'll play a bit, And run about all over it. But the fruit we will not pick, For that would be a naughty trick, And very likely make us sick. Nor will we pluck the pretty flowers That grow about the beds and bowers, Because you know they are not ours. We'll take the daisies, white and red, Because mamma has often said That we may gather them instead. And much I hope that we always may Our very dear mamma obey, And mind whatever she may say." Fine.

Description
1766. First Edition. GOLDSMITH, Oliver. The Vicar of Wakefield. Salisbury: Printed by B. Collins for F. Newberry, 1766. Two volumes. 12mo, 19th-century full tan calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, green morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. $4800.First edition, first issue, of Goldsmith's best-known novel, beautifully bound by Bedford. The Vicar of Wakefield has long charmed readers ""in part due to the imaginative glow that Goldsmith so effortlessly casts over the action… and to his flexible and easy style"" (Baugh, et al., 1061). As celebrated as the novel itself is the account which grew up around it regarding Dr. Johnson's hand in seeing it published. ""Boswell tells the story that Johnson was one morning called in by Goldsmith, whose landlady had arrested him for his rent. Johnson found that Goldsmith had a novel ready for press, took it to a publisher, sold it for 60 pounds, and brought back the sum, which enabled Goldsmith to pay his rent and rate his landlady"" (DNB). First issue, with the misprint ""Waekefield"" in running headline in Volume II, page 95. Variant (2), with no catchword on page 213 of Volume I, pages 39 and 159 in Volume II correctly printed. Rothschild 1028. Text fine, only minor wear to handsome calf binding. A beautiful copy.

Description
London: Chatto & Windus, 1929 First UK edition, first printing. Publisher's green cloth, with spine lettered in gilt; in its original white pictorial dust jacket, with an illustration of green and orange wind-blown trees and a bird to front panel, lettered in black. Very good book, with moderate spotting to cloth and text block edges; very good unclipped dust jacket, with some toning to spine, light soiling and spotting to rear panel, and a couple of tiny closed tears to top edge of front panel. With the uncommon wraparound Book Society band, with some clear tape repair to verso. Overall, a pleasing copy that presents very well. In this psychologically penetrative classic, seven children living in Jamaica are put on a ship bound for England after their home is destroyed in a storm. The children are captured by pirates, but in a creative twist, it is the children who frighten the pirates because of their undeveloped sense of morality. The book is featured on Modern Library's 100 Best Novels list, and is widely recognized as a precursor to William Golding's Lord of the Flies (1954). . First UK Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
